In aquatic systems, the bioavailability of chemical contaminants is determined via the physicochemical properties of the compounds and the organic matrices as well as through the milieu parameters of the water. The amount of substance freely dissolved in water yields an approximate characterization of the bioavailable fraction, which can be reduced substantially through the sorption of particulate or dissolved organic matter. For ionogenic compounds, a distinction must be made between the initial substance and dissociated or protonated species which, according to recent results, may also contribute to the bioconcentration found in organisms. The lipophilicity model to estimate bioconcentration factors initially refers only to an estimation of the freely dissolved compound concentration. Analysis of the bioaccumulation of sediment-borne contaminants shows that the uptake mainly occurs via the interstitial water and can be adequately described with the lipophilicity model. 相似文献

It is suggested that novel nuisance algal blooms can result from major shifts in N/P or NH4
+/NO3
- ratios. Inland hydraulic engineering caused a shift from P-limitation (before 1977) towards N-limitation (after 1977) in the Marsdiep area (Dutch coastal waters). Following this shift the colonial flagellate Phaeocystis sp. became more abundant and started to bloom during the nutrient-controlled period (later spring to autumn). Competition experiments showed that the N/P ratio can influence the species composition of marine phytoplankton. In addition, the natural distribution of some species like Rhodomonas sp. and Emiliania huxleyi may be affected by the frequency of nutrient pulses in the system. Phaeocystis was a poor competitor under P-limitation and a good competitor under N-limitation. Colony formation was absent under P- and NH4
+-limitation. Colonies were formed under NO3
--limitation. These preliminary results suggest that colony-forming Phaeocystic blooms may be restricted (besides light-controlled environments) to those N-controlled environments where nitrate is consumed by Phaeocystis. The distribution of Phaeocystis along the European continental coast is evaluated on the basis of its ability to compete for nutrients and to form colonies when nitrate is the major N-source. 相似文献

In Nephtys hombergii Savigny (Annelida: Polychaeta: Errantia), succinate and less pronounced L-alanine are accumulated as endproducts during an initial phase of anaerobiosis. In this phase aspartate is utilized as substrate for anaerobic energy production in addition to glycogen. Prolonged anaerobiosis results in the formation of propionate and acetate which, to a large extent, are excreted into the water. The concentrations of aspartate and succinate were found to remain unchanged down to a PwO
2(oxygen partial pressure in incubation water) of approximately 20 torr, indicating a fully aerobic metabolism. At a PwO
2of 15 torr characteristic changes can be observed: energy production becomes partially anaerobic. At a PwO
2of 7 torr the level of aspartate is largely reduced, but the accumulation of succinate is still significantly less than at anoxia. [In the habitat of N. hombergii, the intertidal mud flats, a PwO
2in the range from 0 torr (Pamatmat, 1968) to 12 torr (Wells and Warren, 1975) was measured.] The activities of some important enzymes involved in anaerobic energy production (among them pyruvate kinase, phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase and lactate dehydrogenase) were measured. Stages in the life cycle of the rhizostome jellyfish Rhizostoma octopus (L.) were reared in the laboratory from planula to young medusa and are described here. Fertilization of eggs was external,
and planulae, 110–150 μm in length, appeared after 2 days. These settled and developed into the scyphistoma stage. Scyphistomae
reached a maximum size of 2.3 mm, bore up to 24 tentacles, and had a large manubrium. Polyps reproduced asexually mainly by
podocysts. Strobilation was induced by temperature change. Each strobila released up to five ephyrae that measured 2.7–5.8 mm
in diameter at liberation. During transformation from newly released ephyra to young medusa, velar lappets appeared and increased
in number, the manubrium developed eight branched oral arms with epaulettes, and a marginal gastric network arose. Only one
cnidocyst type, the “a”-atrichous haploneme, was present in the planula. In addition to these haplonemes, heterotrichous microbasic
euryteles were observed in polyps, ephyrae, and medusae. Statoliths, located in the rhopalia, had a characteristic compact

Summary The vibratory courtship signal generated by abdominal and leg movements of male Cupiennius salei on plants consists of impulses, which in groups of about ten form syllables. A syllable together with the preceding silent pause is called a sequence. Up to 50 sequences chained together form a series. A series together with the preceding silent period is called an interseries. A complete courtship is built up from a row of successive interseries. An additional signal produced by palpal drumming only occurs between syllables. Females respond to ca. 40% of the male signal series with a single irregular signal produced by leg oscillations and lasting for 113–1790 ms. Their response reduces the duration of the male interseries significantly from an average of 27.9 s to 20.6 s. The female signal follows a male signal series within a narrow time frame of 0.89±0.53 s. Analysis over long periods of time and of complete courtships showed the male signalling to be highly structured in the time domain and to contain many cues potentially usable by the female for both such precise timing and conspecific recognition: (1) On average, the interval between the last two syllables is significantly longer than the preceding ones. (2) During the course of a series, syllable durations increase nearly linearly from 93 ms to 123 ms. (3) The twelfth sequence (T-12) prior to the final one (T) is outstanding since here, roughly 4 s before the end of a series, the duration of sequences and pauses, the signal amplitudes and the occurrence of palpal drumming abruptly start to increase. Also, the frequencies contained in the syllables shift to higher values. (4) Between sequences T-4 and T-6 pause duration and sequence duration reach their minimum whereas the values for signal acceleration and the occurrence of palpal drumming are highest. 相似文献

Cadmium contamination in the agricultural soil of the region Leipzig-Halle was determined at 63 sites covering an area of ca. 7 000 km2. Normalization according to lutum and organic matter lead to effective exposure values; their distribution was compared with NOEC data taken from literature. The deposition of heavy metals bound to air dust and their ecological effects depend, to a large degree, on particle size, which influences the transport processes in the environment. To estimate the size range of the particles mainly taken up by the pine needles, concentration gradients along a sector leeward of Leipzig were modelled according toGauss plume calculations. Stomach contents of the sea star species Astropecten aranciacus (L.) and A. bispinosus (Otto) consisted of roughly the same sort of prey, mostly bivalves and irregular sea urchins. However, the two predators ingested prey of different size classes. The stomach contents of A. bispinosus reflected the size distribution of the benthic macrofauna, while larger prey was more frequent in the stomach contents of A. aranciacus. As the density of prey in the investigated area is low, A. aranciacus and A. bispinosus are likely to compete for food. Possible mechanisms reducing the effect of competition are discussed. 相似文献

Although two billion people in the world are suffering from iodine deficiency there is little information on the chemical fate of iodine in the terrestrial environment. Here we show that peatlands play a major role in terrestrial iodine cycling. Chemical data from two peat profiles from Patagonia, Chile imply that transformation of iodine from its inorganic form to organoiodine compounds during early humification in peatlands is a key process in storage of iodine in the terrestrial environment. Once bound in peat, iodine remains stable for thousands of years. In the earths peatlands, net accumulation of iodine since the last glacial period is estimated to be 12–36 teragrams (1 Tg=1012 g). These data suggest that peatlands are a major reservoir of iodine in terrestrial ecosystems. Our novel model of iodine distribution in the terrestrial environment demonstrates the key role of peatlands in burial and reemission of organically bound iodine. 相似文献
