The paper describes the fieldwork at the Italian test site of the abandoned mine of sphalerite and galena in Ingurtosu (Sardinia), with the aim to assess the applicability of a “toolbox” to establish the optimized techniques for remediation of soils contaminated by mining activities. A preliminary characterization—including (hydro)geochemistry, heavy metal concentration and their mobility in soil, bioprospecting for microbiology and botany—provided a data set for the development of a toolbox to deliver a microbially assisted phytoremediation process. Euphorbia pithyusa was selected as an endemic pioneer plant to be associated with a bacterial consortium, established with ten selected native strains, including metal-tolerant bacteria and producers of plant growth factors. The toolbox was firstly assessed in a greenhouse pot experiment. A positive effect of bacterial inoculum on E. pithyusa germination and total plant survival was observed. E. pithyusa showed to be a well-performing metallophyte species, and only inoculated soil retained a microbial activity with a high functional diversity, expanding metabolic affinity also towards root exudates. These results supported the decision to proceed with a field trial, investigating different treatments used singly or in combination: bioaugmentation with bacterial consortia, mycorrhizal fungi and a commercial mineral amendment. Microbial activity in soil, plant physiological parameters and heavy metal content in plants and in soil were monitored. Five months after the beginning, an early assessment of the toolbox under field conditions was carried out. Despite the cold season (October–March), results suggested the following: (1) the field setup as well as the experimental design proved to be effective; (2) plant survival was satisfactory; (3) soil quality was increased and bioaugmentation improved microbial activity, expanding the metabolic competences towards plant interaction (root exudates); and (4) multivariate analysis supported the data provided that the proposed toolbox can be established and the field trial can be carried forward.  相似文献

Because a vascular aetiology has been suggested for the limb and oromandibular defects described after chorionic villus sampling (CVS), to determine whether transabdominal (TA) CVS causes noticeable changes in umbilical artery velocity waveforms in first-trimester pregnancies, the pulsatility index (PI) of the umbilical artery was evaluated before and after TA-CVS in 175 pregnancies sampled between 10·0 and 13·0 weeks' gestation. In 139 uncomplicated pregnancies, the mean PI values (with 95 per cent confidence interval) were before TA-CVS 2·751 (2·692–2·809), after 10 min 2·723 (2·697–2·809), and after 1 h 2·781 (2·722–2·840). There were no significant changes in PI relative to the CVS procedure either in pregnancies with an abnormal result or in those ending in spontaneous abortion. Our data do not support any statistically significant change in umbilical artery PI relative to TA-CVS in first-trimester pregnancies. This procedure, despite its invasive character, does not appear to affect the feto-placental circulation.  相似文献

The presence of infectious protozoan pathogens in reclaimed water may present an unacceptable health risk. This study was designed similar to a study reported by Garcia et al. (2002), which detected no infectious Giardia cysts in the final effluent of a tertiary treatment facility as determined by animal infectivity (dose 1000 cysts/gerbil). This study also included evaluation of Cryptosporidium oocyst infectivity. Infectious Giardia cysts were detected in the final effluent with 1 gerbil out of 3 inoculated with 250 cysts from reclaimed water showing signs of infection 15 days postinoculation. None of the Cryptosporidium oocysts concentrated from the reclaimed water samples appeared to be infectious.  相似文献

Gas transfer through surface water of streams is an effective process for the environmental quality of the aquatic ecosystem. Several theoretical approaches have been proposed to estimate gas transfer rate. This paper is devoted to present a turbulence-based model and to compare it with other 3 turbulence-based modeling frameworks that provide an estimation of gas-transfer coefficient KL at the air-water interface. These models were derived for the reaeration process. In this paper, they have been verified both for reaeration and volatilization using experimental data collected in a laboratory rectangular flume and in a circular sewer reach. These data refer to oxygen absorption and cyclohexane volatilization, respectively. Comparison of results for oxygen shows that the tested models exhibit an average absolute difference between their results and the experimental data ranging from 12.5% and 25.6%. Also, the scaling analysis of the experimental data support both small-eddy based models and the model proposed by the authors. Moreover, volatilization results show that the process is also affected by a channel shape factor, which was, finally, quantified.  相似文献
