The colonization-extinction dynamics of many species are affected by the dynamics of their patches. For increasing our understanding of the metapopulation dynamics of sessile species confined to dynamic patches, we fitted a Bayesian incidence function model extended for dynamic landscapes to snapshot data on five epiphytic lichens among 2083 mapped oaks (dynamic patches). We estimate the age at which trees become suitable patches for different species, which defines their niche breadth (number of suitable trees). We show that the colonization rates were generally low, but increased with increasing connectivity in accordance with metapopulation theory. The rates were related to species traits, and we show, for the first time, that they are higher for species with wide niches and small dispersal propagules than for species with narrow niches or large propagules. We also show frequent long-distance dispersal in epiphytes by quantifying the relative importance of local dispersal and background deposition of dispersal propagules. Local stochastic extinctions from intact trees were negligible in all study species, and thus, the extinction rate is set by the rate of patch destruction (tree fall). These findings mean that epiphyte metapopulations may have slow colonization-extinction dynamics that are explained by connectivity, species traits, and patch dynamics. 相似文献

Using tracking radars, we investigated the variability of flight directions of long-distance nocturnal passerine migrants
across seasons (spring versus autumn migration) and sites at the southern (56° N) and northern (68° N) ends of the Scandinavian
Peninsula (Lund versus Abisko). Whilst most migrants at Lund are on passage to and from breeding sites in Fennoscandia, the
majority of the migrants at Abisko are close to their breeding sites, and migration at Abisko thus to a large degree reflects
initial departure from breeding sites (autumn) or final approach to breeding destinations (spring). The radar data were used
to test predictions about differences in orientation and wind drift effects between adult and juvenile birds (a large proportion
of autumn migrants consists of juvenile birds on their first journey), between situations far away from or near the goals
and between different phases of migration (initial departure, en route passage, final approach to goal). The concentrations
(both total and within-night concentrations) of flight directions differed significantly between seasons as well as sites,
with the highest concentration at Lund in spring (mean vector length of track directions, r = 0.79) and lowest at Abisko during spring (r = 0.35). Partial wind drift and partial compensation were recorded at Lund, with a similar effect size in spring and autumn,
whilst possible wind drift effects at Abisko were obscured by the large directional scatter at this site. The results from
Lund support the prediction that the high proportion of juveniles in autumn contributes to increase the directional scatter
during this season, whilst there was no support for predictions of differential wind drift effects between seasons and situations
with different goal distances. The most striking and surprising result was the exceedingly large scatter of flight directions
at Abisko, particularly in spring. We suggest that such an exaggerated scatter may be associated with final approach orientation,
where migrants reach their specific goals from all various directions by final navigation within a more wide-ranging goal
region. The larger scatter of autumn flight directions at Abisko compared to Lund may be due to exploratory flights in variable
directions being more common at initial departure from breeding sites than later during migratory passage. These surprising
results highlight the importance of studying and analysing orientation during final approach to (and initial departure from)
migratory goals for understanding the orientation systems of migratory birds. 相似文献

Contrary to Bateman’s principle, polyandry appears to be a common female mating strategy. Several hypotheses have been proposed
to explain the evolution of polyandry. It is assumed that females gain either material or genetic benefits from multiple matings,
or that they are coerced into mating by males. In water striders, mating is generally assumed to be costly to females, and
they are thought to mate for reasons of convenience, adjusting their resistance to mating according to male harassment. Here,
we tested the effect of number of matings (with the same male) and number of partners on female fitness in a water strider
Aquarius paludum. In the first experiment, we regulated the time females spent with a male and found that females’ egg production increased
with multiple matings up to a point. The result supports the existence of an optimal female mating frequency. In the second
experiment, we tested how polyandry affects the number of eggs laid and egg hatching success. We conducted three different
trials: females mated four times with either a single male, two different males, or with four different males. Females that
mated with four different males laid the lowest number of eggs and had the lowest egg hatching success, suggesting that polyandry
reduces females’ egg production and egg hatching success in A. paludum. We conclude that A. paludum females probably gain material benefits from mating but no genetic benefits were found in this study. 相似文献

Suspended particulate matter (SPM) dynamics in ocean models are usually treated with an advection–diffusion equation for one or more sediment size classes coupled to the hydrodynamical part of the model. Numerical solution of these additional partial differential equations unavoidably introduces numerical diffusion, i.e. in the case of sharp gradients the possible occurrence of artificial oscillations and non-positivity. A Lagrangian particle-tracking model has been developed to simulate short-term SPM dynamics. Modelling individual sediment particles allows a straightforward physical interpretation of the processes. The tracking of large numbers of individual and independent particles (up to 25 million in total in a single sediment class) can be achieved on high performance computer clusters, due to efficient parallelisation of particle tracking. The movement of the particles is described by a stochastic differential equation, which is consistent with the advection–diffusion equation. Here, the concentration profile is represented by a set of independent moving particles, which are advected according to the 3D velocity field, while the diffusive displacements of the particles are sampled from a random distribution, which is related to the eddy diffusivity field. To account for erosion a new parameterisation is proposed. Three numerical particle tracking schemes (EULER, MILSTEIN and HEUN) are presented and validated in idealised test cases. Finally, the particle tracking algorithms are applied to a realistic scenario, a severe winter storm in the East Frisian Wadden Sea (southern North Sea). The comparison with observations and an Eulerian SPM transport model seems to indicate a somewhat better fidelity of the Lagrangian approach. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to compare assessments made by Finnish- and Swedish-speaking workers in Finland about the safety climate in their companies, because an earlier study showed that the accident frequency of Swedish-speaking workers was one third lower than that of Finnish-speaking workers. 148 Finnish-speaking and 138 Swedish-speaking workers from 14 small and medium-sized companies participated in this study. They filled out a Finnish safety climate questionnaire, the reliability of which was above the acceptable level. There were no differences between the language groups in the total variables of safety climate and safety action. Based on the differences in single items, we interpreted that Swedish-speaking workers stressed collective safety more, whereas Finnish-speaking workers put more emphasis on their personal responsibility for safety. 相似文献

Heat and mechanical protection properties of 6 fabric combinations commonly used in firefighters’ protective clothing were assessed before and after different heat treatment. It was shown that after heat exposure, the values obtained were generally lower than in the original state. The mechanical properties of the materials were more affected by heat than by heat protective properties. This article focuses on employee direct participation in occupational health and safety (OHS) management. The article explains what determines employee opportunities to participate in OHS management. The explanatory framework focuses on safety culture and safety management at workplaces. The framework is empirically tested using Estonian cross-sectional, multilevel data of organizations and their employees. The analysis indicates that differences in employee participation in OHS management in the Estonian case could be explained by differences in OHS management practices rather than differences in safety culture. This indicates that throughout the institutional change and shift to the European model of employment relations system, change in management practices has preceded changes in safety culture which according to theoretical argument is supposed to follow culture change. 相似文献

Footedness is a personal quality like handedness. Footedness may be associated with moving ability during mounting, dismounting, and jumping movements. Occupational accidents have occurred during movement at different working levels, during the use of access and exit systems, and during the mounting of vehicles. Aging can also affect accident risk and body laterality. For example, falling accidents on stairs are common among the elderly. One reason for accidents may be that the structure of the access system or stair system is unsuitable for individual moving patterns depending partly on body laterality. Footedness and the way the feet are used may be contradictory to the demands of the moving situation, especially during uncommon or rapid situations. This contradiction may trigger disturbance during moving. The aims of this pilot study were (a) to review the literature briefly and (b) to describe the use of the dominant and nondominant foot by farmers and the elderly when mounting a tractor and stairs, respectively. The study also gives ideas for future studies based on both (a) and (b). 相似文献
