This paper provides additional data on a sewage sludge amended soil certified reference material, CRM 483, which was certified in 1997 for its EDTA and acetic acid extractable contents of some trace metals, following standardised extraction procedures. The additional work aimed to test the long-term stability of the material and the applicability of an improved version of the BCR three-step sequential extraction procedure on the sewage sludge amended soil (CRM 483). The paper demonstrates the CRM 483 long-term stability for EDTA and acetic acid extractable contents of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn and gives the results (obtained in the framework of an interlaboratory study) for the extractable contents of the same elements in the CRM 483, following the BCR three-step sequential extraction scheme. The aqua regia extractable contents following the ISO 11466 Standard are also given. The data are given as indicative (not certified) values.  相似文献

A study was conducted to evaluate the association between PCBs in residential indoor air and in the serum of older, long time residents of three upper Hudson River communities. Samples of indoor air and of serum were collected from 170 persons 55 to 74 years of age, and analyzed for PCBs using glass capillary gas chromatography. After adjusting for age, BMI, cigarette smoking, and Hudson River fish consumption with multiple linear regression analysis, the results indicated statistically significant associations between concentrations in indoor air and serum for PCB-28, a lightly chlorinated congener common in air that accumulates in serum, and PCB-105. Duration of exposure was an important factor, since among persons who had lived in their home for 39 years or more, 11 of the 12 most commonly detected congeners were significantly correlated, as was their sum (∑ PCB). Significant associations between indoor air and serum PCB concentrations also were more likely when collected in cooler months and if the two samples were collected within 20 d of each other. The study is among the first to indicate that PCB concentrations characteristic of residential indoor air are associated with a detectable increase in body burden.  相似文献

The city of Aldama, Chihuahua, Mexico is located 30 km NNE of Chihuahua city. Three high-volume collectors with PM10 heads were placed in specific locations in Aldama during the year 2011 to measure radioisotope concentrations in the air. The city area of 16 km2 was divided into 64 squares of 500 × 500 m. At the vertices of the grid, silt samples were taken between January and June 2011, before the rains began. The concentrations of natural, cosmogenic, and anthropogenic radioactive isotopes were calculated in both filters and silts samples. The isotopes selected for the measurement were 238U, 232Th, 7Be, 137Cs, and 40K. Measurements of PM10 and silts were performed during 2011, coinciding with the accident at Fukushima, Japan, on March 11. For this reason, we could see the 137Cs in PM10 increase between April and July; with the arrival of the rains, the 137Cs concentration began to decrease in the air. The concentration of PM10 measured by the equipment located at the Mexican Uranium plant (URAMEX, initials in Spanish) that was processing radioactive ores exceeded the standard values in February and March, when the air velocity increases. At City Hall, the concentration of PM10 surpassed the value of the standard between May and July. This increased concentration is likely due to increased automobile traffic because City Hall is located in the city center. At a private home, the concentration of PM10 surpassed the standard on several days during the year because the home is located on the outskirts of the city, where most of the streets are not paved. Due to the high concentrations of PM10, especially at the collection point located at the private home, it is necessary to start taking steps to mitigate their spread before they cause health problems in the younger population and in older adults.

Implications: The radioisotope content found in the PM10 confirms that the decision to place the Mexican Uranium plant (URAMEX, initials in Spanish) processing radioactive ores near the town of Aldama was not well thought out. Because the monitoring work was carried out in 2011 and coincided with the Fukushima accident, an increased concentration of 137Cs could be detected in the PM10. We made recommendations to the municipal authorities of the city to mitigate the concentration of particles in the air.  相似文献

We have compared the random-amplified-polymorphic DNA (RAPD) patterns of Symbiodinium isolates from seven species of giant clams to investigate the large genetic variation that we previously reported for this group of dinoflagellate symbionts using allozyme analysis. Comparisons of 163 RAPD characters by unweighted pair-group arithmetic-average cluster analysis (UPGMA) corroborate our previous findings that giant clams associate with a large number of genetically distinguishable algal symbionts, and that the isolates from a single Tridacna gigas individual form a group of closely related algae. However, the overall topology of the UPGMA tree constructed from RAPD data differs from that of the previous allozyme data, indicating that the combined data we have collected to date are insufficient to accurately infer phylogenetic affiliations between the isolates studied. Comparisons of our data set with those published for strains of Gymnodinium catenatum, a toxic dinoflagellate with a sexual life stage, shows that our isolates are even more diverse. Algal isolates from giant clams have a level of RAPD variation comparable to organisms that are able to undergo sexual recombination. This study demonstrates the sensitivity of the RAPD technique in detecting genetic diversity in this group of algae, and highlights the need for more comparative data for the major clades of Symbiodinium. This article describes the collaborative modeling process and the resulting water resources planning model developed to evaluate water management scenarios in the transboundary Rio Grande basin. The Rio Grande is a severely water stressed basin that faces numerous management challenges as it crosses numerous jurisdictional boundaries. A collaborative process was undertaken to identify and model water management scenarios to improve water supply for stakeholders, the environment, and international obligations of water delivery from Mexico to the United States. A transparent and open process of data collection, model building, and scenario development was completed by a project steering committee composed of university, nongovernmental, and governmental experts from both countries. The outcome of the process was a planning model described in this article, with data and operations that were agreed on by water planning officials in each country. Water management scenarios were created from stakeholder input and were modeled and evaluated for effectiveness with the planning model.  相似文献

The surveillance of communicable diseases after a natural disaster reflects the permanent state of effectiveness of the health services and the adverse factors of the natural, physical and family environments. Diarrhoeal diseases may be the best indicator of a community's period of recovery. Alfalfa plants were grown in soil-pots contaminated with a mixture of Cd(II), Cu(II), Ni(II), and Zn(II), (at 50 mg/kg each) at pHs of 4.5, 5.8, and 7.1. The plants were fertilized using a nutrient solution, which was adjusted appropriately to the same pH. Plants in the control treatment were grown in the absence of the heavy metals mixture. The growth of the control plants was the same at the three pHs studied and the heavy metal stressed plants also showed similar behavior at each pHs. There were statistically significant differences (P<0.05) between the shoot length of the control treatment plants and the length of plants grown in the presence of the heavy metal mixture. Under the effects of the heavy metal mixture, nickel was the most accumulated element in the shoot tissue, with 437, 333, and 308 ppm at pH 7.1, 5.8, and 4.5, respectively. Cadmium was found to be second in accumulated concentrations with 202 ppm, 124 ppm, and 132 ppm at pH 7.1, 5.8, and 4.5, respectively, while zinc was third, followed by copper. The maximum relative uptakes (element in plant/element in soil-water-solution) were found to be 26 times for nickel, 23 times for cadmium, 12 times for zinc. and 6 times for copper. We considered these relations as indicative of the ability of alfalfa plants to take up elements from a soil matrix contaminated with a mixture of cadmium, copper, nickel, and zinc.  相似文献
