The effect of two major hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX) metabolites, hexahydro-1-nitroso-3,5-dinitro-1,3,5-triazine (MNX) and hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitroso-1,3,5-triazine (TNX), on cricket (Acheta domesticus) survival and reproduction was studied. RDX metabolites did not have adverse effects on cricket survival, growth, and egg production. However, MNX and TNX did affect egg hatching. MNX and TNX were more toxic in spiked-sand than in topical tests. TNX was more toxic to egg than MNX. Developmental stage and exposure time affected hatching. After 30 days exposure to MNX or TNX, the EC20, EC50, and EC95 were 47, 128, and 247 microg/g for TNX, and 65, 140, and 253 microg/g for MNX in topical tests. The ECs for 20, 50, and 95 were 21, 52, and 99 microg/g for MNX, and 12, 48, and 97 microg/g for TNX in sand. No gross abnormalities in cricket nypmhs were observed in all experiments indicating that neither TNX or MNX is teratogenic in this assay.  相似文献

Hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine, a cyclonitramine commonly known as RDX, is used in the production of military munitions. Contamination of soil, sediment, and ground and surface waters with RDX has been reported in different places around the world. Acute and subacute toxicities of RDX have been relatively well documented in terrestrial vertebrates, but among aquatic vertebrates the information available is limited. The objective of this study was to characterize the acute toxicity of RDX to larval zebrafish. Mortality (LC50) and incidence of vertebral column deformities (EC50) were two of the end points measured in this study. The 96-h LC50 was estimated at 22.98 and 25.64 mgl(-1) in two different tests. The estimated no-observed-effective-concentration (NOEC) values of RDX on lethality were 13.27+/-0.05 and 15.32+/-0.30 mgl(-1); and the lowest-observed-effective-concentration (LOEC) values were 16.52+/-0.05 and 19.09+/-0.23 mgl(-1) in these two tests, respectively. The 96-h EC50 for vertebral deformities on survivors from one of the acute lethality tests was estimated at 20.84 mgl(-1), with NOEC and LOEC of 9.75+/-0.34 and 12.84+/-0.34 mgl(-1), respectively. Behavioral aberrations were also noted in this acute toxicity study, including the occurrence of whirling movement and lethargic behavior. The acute effects of RDX on survival, incidence of deformities, and behavior of larval zebrafish occurred at the high end of the most frequently reported concentrations of RDX in aquatic environments. The chronic effects of RDX in aquatic vertebrates need to be determined for an adequate assessment of the ecological risk of environmental RDX.  相似文献

A physicochemical treatment (coagulation-flocculation) was applied to a slaughterhouse wastewater, using anionic polyacrylamide as coagulant aid to improve the settling velocity of the flocs formed with the coagulants used: ferric sulphate, aluminium sulphate and polyaluminium chloride. The optimum speed and stirring time for the flocculation stage were ascertained along with the optimum pH and coagulant and coagulant aid doses. The speed and coagulation time were initially set according to recommendations in the literature concerning the treatment of this type of water. Chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand at 5 days (BOD5) and total suspended solids (TSS) were recorded at the beginning and end of each experiment in order to monitor the process. Once the optimal conditions had been established, several parameters were measured in order to assess the coagulation-flocculation process: particle number and size, sludge volume, nutrients (ammonia nitrogen, total Kjeldahl nitrogen, albuminoid nitrogen, orthophosphate, total phosphorus) and the residual concentration of iron and aluminium in clarified water. Anionic polyacrylamide, when added with ferric sulphate or polyaluminium chloride led to a significant increase in the settling speed.  相似文献

The land cover change of Uruguayan Forestal Plan provoked biogeochemical changes on horizon Au(1) of Argiudols; in native prairies which were replaced by monoculture Eucalyptus sp. plantation with 20 year rotations as trees. Five fields forested and six natural prairies were compared. The results not only show a statistical significant soil acidification, diminution of soil organic carbon, increase of aliphaticity degree of humic substances, and increase of affinity and capacity of hydrolytic activity from soil microbial communities for forested sites with Eucalyptus sp. but also, a tendency of podzolization and/or mineralization by this kind of land cover changes, with a net soil organic lost of 16.6 tons ha(-1) in the horizon Au(1) of soil under Eucalyptus sp. plantation compared with prairie. Besides, these results point out the necessity of correction of the methodology used by assigned Uruguayan commission to assess the national net emission of greenhouse gases, since the mineralization and/or podzolization process detected in forested soil imply a overestimation of soil organic carbon. The biochemical parameters show a statistical significant correlation between the soil organic carbon status and these parameters which were presented as essential for the correct evaluation of Uruguayan soil carbon sink.  相似文献

The performance of different commercially available catalysts (supported Pd, Pt, Rh, bimetallic Pd-Pt, and Cr-Cu-Ti oxide catalyst) for the oxidation of methane, alone and in presence of ammonia and hydrogen sulphide is studied in this work. Catalysts performance was evaluated both in terms of activity and resistance to poisoning. The main conclusions are that supported Pd and Rh, present the highest activities for methane oxidation, both alone and in presence of ammonia, whereas they are severely poisoned in presence of H2S. Pt and Cr-Cu-Ti are less active but more sulphur resistant, but their activity is lower than the residual activity of sulphur-deactivated Pd and Rh catalysts. The Pd-Pt catalyst exhibits low activity and it is quickly deactivated in presence of hydrogen sulphide.  相似文献

Myxococcus xanthus is a soil bacterium of the myxobacteria group and is abundant in almost all soils. Its role in soil ecology is considered significant. One noteworthy characteristic of the bacterium is that it produces large quantities of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). It is also known that its biomass has the capacity to fix heavy metals. Here it is reported that M. xanthus was able to accumulate 0.6 mmol of La per g of wet biomass and/or 0.99 mmol per g of dry biomass. Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) observation of M. xanthus cells treated with La showed that a substantial amount of this cation was fixed in the EPS and in the cell wall. Smaller amounts were also observed in the cytoplasm. Fixed La appeared as phosphate in all cellular locations. The results given here also show that the use of La enables TEM observation of the M. xanthus EPS as a dense fibrillar net surrounding the cells. This technique is relatively easy and prevents EPS collapse, which occurs frequently during the fixation and dehydration procedures commonly used in preparations for TEM observations. Since antibodies are no longer required, the La stain can be carried out without delaying bacterial cell cultivation or isolation. In addition, the presence of La in cell cytoplasm without cell degeneration suggests that this microorganism could be used as a model in the study of bacteria-lanthanide interactions.  相似文献

We studied the possibility of struvite formation using killed cells of Myxococcus xanthus. Cells were killed by heat, UV light and sonication. In all cases, we show that struvite crystallization occurs and we propose that the dead cells or cell debris can act by themselves as heterogeneous crystallization nuclei. We also show that the slime, produced by Myxococcus in a large quantities, is not involved in this process.  相似文献

The microalgae genus Scenedesmus is commonly found in freshwater bodies, wastewater facilities and water polluted with heavy metals. Phenotypic plasticity in Scenedesmus has been documented in response to a wide variety of conditions; however, heavy metals have not been comprehensively documented as phenotypic plasticity inducers. In this study, we report the phenotypic plasticity of Scenedesmus incrassatulus (a non-spiny, four-cell coenobium forming species) in response to EC50 value of copper, cadmium and hexavalent chromium. S. incrassatulus was grown in batch cultures in the presence of each metal. Chlorophyll-a content, cell size, parameters derived from the schematic energy-flux model for photosystem II, and morphotype expressions were recorded. Divalent cation metals induced unicellular forms, and hexavalent chromium produced out-of-shape coenobia corresponding to various stages of autospore formation. The changes induced by divalent metals were interpreted as phenotypic plasticity, because they were always associated to population doublings and were reversible when toxicant pressure was removed (only for Cu). Copper was the best inductor of unicellular forms and also affected significantly all the photosynthetic parameters measured. The developed morphotypes could confer ecological advantages to S. incrassatulus in metal stressed environments.  相似文献

This study evaluates and compares the effectiveness of solar photo–Fenton systems for the inactivation of hepatitis A virus (HAV) in water. The effect of solar irradiance, dark- Fenton reaction and three different reactant concentrations (2.5/5, 5/10 and 10/20 mg/L of Fe2+/H2O2) on the photo–Fenton process were tested in glass bottle reactors (200 mL) during 6 h under natural sunlight. Disinfection kinetics were determined both by RT-qPCR and infectivity assays. Mean water temperatures ranged from 25 to 27.3 °C, with a maximum local noon UV irradiances of 22.36 W/m2. Photo–Fenton systems yielded increased viral reduction rates in comparison with the isolated effect under the Fenton reaction in darkness (negligible viral reduction) or the solar radiation (0.25 Log of RNA reduction). With the highest concentration employed (10–20 mg/L Fe2+–H2O2), an average RNA reduction rate of ~ 1.8 Log (initial concentration of 105 pfu/mL) and a reduction of 80% in the infectivity capacity were reached. Results showed a strong synergistic effect between Fe2+/H2O2 and sunlight, demonstrating that significant disinfection rates of HAV under photo–Fenton systems may occur with relatively higher efficiency at middle environmental temperatures and without the need for an energy-intensive light source.  相似文献
