Species interactions matter to conservation. Setting an ambitious recovery target for a species requires considering the size, density, and demographic structure of its populations such that they fulfill the interactions, roles, and functions of the species in the ecosystems in which they are embedded. A recently proposed framework for an International Union for Conservation of Nature Green List of Species formalizes this requirement by defining a fully recovered species in terms of representation, viability, and functionality. Defining and quantifying ecological function from the viewpoint of species recovery is challenging in concept and application, but also an opportunity to insert ecological theory into conservation practice. We propose 2 complementary approaches to assessing a species’ ecological functions: confirmation (listing interactions of the species, identifying ecological processes and other species involved in these interactions, and quantifying the extent to which the species contributes to the identified ecological process) and elimination (inferring functionality by ruling out symptoms of reduced functionality, analogous to the red-list approach that focuses on symptoms of reduced viability). Despite the challenges, incorporation of functionality into species recovery planning is possible in most cases and it is essential to a conservation vision that goes beyond preventing extinctions and aims to restore a species to levels beyond what is required for its viability. This vision focuses on conservation and recovery at the species level and sees species as embedded in ecosystems, influencing and being influenced by the processes in those ecosystems. Thus, it connects and integrates conservation at the species and ecosystem levels.  相似文献

Previous research has demonstrated that an anionic surfactant can increase the solubility of the vapor phases of both naphthalene and sulfur dioxide in water. This study examines the feasibility of removing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) during gas absorption by adding the polyoxyethylenated nonionic surfactants tetraethylene glycol monodecyl ether (C10E4), octaethylene glycol monodecyl ether (C10E8), and octaethylene glycol monotetradecyl ether (C14E8), to water. The apparent solubility and absorption rates of naphthalene in surfactant solution were slightly higher than in pure water at a concentration lower than the critical micelle concentration (CMC). However, the apparent equilibrium naphthalene solubility increased linearly in proportion to the concentrations of nonionic surfactants because of the solubilization effect of micelles at concentrations above the CMC. The solubilization effect exceeded that of the reduced mass transfer coefficient, increasing the rate of absorption of vaporous naphthalene. For the four surfactants, the capacity to solubilize naphthalene was in the order C10E4 > C14E8 > C10E8 > sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and was related to the hydrophile-lipophile balance values of the surfactants. The enrichment factors, which can express the degree of naphthalene solubility in solution, were 6.09-14.2 at a surfactant concentration of 0.01 M for the three polyoxyethylenated nonionic surfactants. Empirical findings confirm that adding nonionic surfactants increases the absorption efficiency of hydrophobic organic compounds (HOCs) using spray or packed tower.  相似文献

The PM(2.5) concentration and its elemental composition were measured in the Cincinnati metropolitan area, which is characterized by intense highway traffic. The spatial and temporal variations were investigated for various chemical elements that contributed to the PM(2.5) fraction during a 1-year-long measurement campaign (December 2001-November 2002). The ambient aerosol monitoring was performed in 11 locations around the city during nine measurement cycles. During each cycle, four Harvard-type impactors were operating in parallel in specific locations to explore various factors affecting the PM(2.5) elemental concentrations. The sampling was performed during business days, thus assuring traffic uniformity. The 24-h PM(2.5) samples were collected on Teflon and quartz filters. Teflon filters were analyzed by X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis while quartz filters were analyzed by thermal-optical transmittance (TOT) analysis. In addition to PM(2.5) measurements, particle size-selective sampling was performed in two cycles using micro-orifice uniform deposit impactor; the collected fractionated deposits were analyzed by XRF. It was found that PM(2.5) concentration ranged from 6.70 to 48.3 mug m(-3) and had low spatial variation (median coefficient of variation, CV=11.3%). The elemental concentrations demonstrated high spatial variation, with the median CV ranged from 38.2% for Fe to 68.7% for Ni. For traffic-related trace metals, the highest concentration was detected in the city center site, which was close to a major highway. The particle size selective measurement revealed that mass concentration of the trace metals, such as Zn, Pb, Ni, as well as that of sulfur reach their peak values in the particle size range of 0.32-1.0 mum. Meteorological parameters and traffic intensity were not found to have a significant influence on the PM(2.5) elemental concentrations.  相似文献

This synthesis article joins the authors of the special issue “Gender perspectives in resilience, vulnerability and adaptation to global environmental change” in a common reflective dialogue about the main contributions of their papers. In sum, here we reflect on links between gender and feminist approaches to research in adaptation and resilience in global environmental change (GEC). The main theoretical contributions of this special issue are threefold: emphasizing the relevance of power relations in feminist political ecology, bringing the livelihood and intersectionality approaches into GEC, and linking resilience theories and critical feminist research. Empirical insights on key debates in GEC studies are also highlighted from the nine cases analysed, from Europe, the Americas, Asia, Africa and the Pacific. Further, the special issue also contributes to broaden the gender approach in adaptation to GEC by incorporating research sites in the Global North alongside sites from the Global South. This paper examines and compares the main approaches adopted (e.g. qualitative or mixed methods) and the methodological challenges that derive from intersectional perspectives. Finally, key messages for policy agendas and further research are drawn from the common reflection.  相似文献

In this study, we have examined the relationships between the concentrations of ambient inhalable airborne fungi and pollen with PM10, PM2.5, ozone, organic carbon, selected trace metals (cadmium, copper, lead, and zinc), temperature, and relative humidity. The database was collected in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA, during two consecutive years. Measurements of all environmental variables were performed at the same site continuously 5 days a week except during winter months. The airborne concentrations of biological and non-biological pollutants ranged as follows: total fungi: 184-16 979 spores m(-3); total pollen: 0-6692 pollen m(-3); PM10: 6.70-65.38 microg m(-3); PM2.5: 5.04-45.02 microg m(-3); and ozone: 2.54-64.17 ppb. Higher levels of total inhalable fungi and particulate matter were found during fall and summer months. In contrast, total pollen concentration showed elevated levels in spring. Peak concentrations of ozone were observed during summer and beginning of fall. Our study concluded that several types of inhalable airborne fungi and pollen, particulate matter, and ozone could be positively correlated as a result of the atmospheric temperature influence.  相似文献

The treatment of dye laden wastewater (DLW) was investigated using alum, CA${C}_A$ and Luffa cylindrica seed extract, CLCSE${C}_{LCSE}$. Cibacron green dye and distilled water were used to simulate the DLW in the laboratory. The optimum conditions for the removal of color and chemical oxygen demand (COD) from DLW was determined using both regular and response surface methodology, RSM-Jar tests with coagulant dosage, DLW pH, stirring time, and temperature as the independent variables. Instrumental characterization of the coagulant and produced sludge were studied. Individual effect using regular Jar test, CA${C}_A$ and CLCSE${C}_{LCSE}$ had best color removal efficiency of 98.4% (2 g/L, pH 8, 30 min and 55°C), and 97.7% (5 g/L, pH 2, 20 min and 55°C), respectively. Also, for COD removal efficiency, CA${C}_A$ and CLCSE${C}_{LCSE}$ had 85.6% (2 g/L, pH 10 and 30 min), and 88.1% (4 g/L, pH 4 and 30 min), respectively. Applying RSM-Jar test, 99.6% and 88.7% color and COD removal efficiency were achieved with 4 g/L CLCSE${C}_{LCSE}$, 0.25 g/L CA${C}_A$, pH 8, and 40°C and 5 g/L CLCSE${C}_{LCSE}$, 0.40 g/L CA${C}_A$, pH 6, and 40°C, respectively. The results indicated that the combination of both coagulants (CA+LCSE${C}_{A + LCSE}$) performed maximally with highly reduced alum dosage, exposing the novelty of the work. Hence, the novelty of the work is the use of minimal quantity of alum and Luffa cylindrica seed extract for effective removal color and COD from the DLW.  相似文献

The majority of oestrogenic material excreted from humans and wildlife, and therefore released into sewers, is in a conjugated form. However, the finding of “free” oestrogens in sewage effluent suggests that these metabolites are somehow converted back into an active form, before or during passage through a sewage treatment process. When male fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas) were continuously exposed to oestradiol-3-glucuronide, in a continuous-flow system, it demonstrated no inherent oestrogenic activity. However, when fish were exposed to effluent generated from laboratory simulations of sewage treatment processes, to which had been added oestradiol-3-glucuronide, oestrogenic activity was observed, suggesting microbial activity was capable of degrading the steroid metabolite into a more potent oestrogen. Oestrogenic potency was determined by measuring changes in plasma vitellogenin (egg yolk precursor) concentrations and gonadosomatic index. The results suggest that inactive metabolites of steroids are very readily biotransformed into biologically active oestrogens.  相似文献

This molecular phylogenetic analysis of 18S ribosomal RNA (18SrDNA) gene sequences from 16 species of holothuroid, suggests strong support for an alternative taxonomic scheme to replace the existing classification. When trees drawn from the 18S rDNA data were constrained to show expected relationships between the holothourid orders, they were significantly worse than the best tree under SH tests. These analyses indicated strongly that the subclass Aspidochirotacea is paraphyletic. Sequences from the order Dendrochirotida grouped with aspidochiroitid sequences, with high bootstrap support, to the exclusion of the elasipod sequence. In line with recent morphological studies the order Apodida were a basal sister group to the other three holothuroid orders examined and the Dendrochirotida was a derived holothuroid order. The purpose of this paper is to establish a definitive measure for a recycling rate in various countries. Numerous measures have been used in the past and have been based on a variety of assumptions, so that the literature has become very difficult to interpret. The objective here is to assess and explain how a recycling rate has been established such that it is unambiguous and serves as a reference point for future work. It then becomes possible to compare and contrast the recycling effort in different countries, and determine the potential for increased activity.  相似文献
