Abstract: As research biologists move into conservation biology, especially in foreign countries, providing support for conservation planning efforts presents unique challenges. Published accounts of national, multidisciplinary planning efforts and priority setting for avian conservation are not common. I describe the process and results of a broad-based, grassroots-oriented avian conservation planning workshop held in the Dominican Republic in which we designed a coordinated strategy for avian conservation in the country. The planning process sought to (1) increase communication and cooperation among conservationists; (2) familiarize participants with resources pertinent to avian conservation; (3) encourage the transfer of information between researchers and managers; (4) promote the concepts of long-term avian monitoring, avian conservation plans, and species management plans; and (5) develop a common, multidisciplinary strategy to promote the conservation of birds in the Dominican Republic. The workshop highlighted group discussions among research biologists, managers, educators, and public policy specialists to assess avian conservation needs and priorities with respect to each discipline and has since galvanized a significant portion of the conservation community around several cooperative projects involving diverse segments of the community. Avian biologists can play a significant role in conservation efforts through a willingness to work with key players in diverse fields and to envision holistic, multidisciplinary approaches to conservation issues.  相似文献

Abstract: We examined six historical specimens of the endangered North Atlantic right whale ( Eubalaena glacialis ) using DNA isolated from documented baleen plates from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Sequences from the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region from these samples were compared with those from a near-exhaustive survey (269 of approximately 320 individuals) of the remaining right whales in the western North Atlantic Ocean. Our results suggest that there has been only relatively modest change in maternal lineage diversity over the past century in the North Atlantic right whale population. Any significant reduction in genetic variation in the species most likely occurred prior to the late nineteenth century. One historical specimen was from the last documented female capable of propagating one of the maternal lineages in the population today; no females in the existing population have been found to carry this mtDNA haplotype. Analysis of the only specimens from the eastern North Atlantic right whale population ever to be examined revealed that eastern and western North Atlantic right whales may not have been genetically differentiated populations. Loss of gene diversity experienced by North Atlantic right whales over the last century has been modest, and the six decades of protection have been successful in maintaining much of the maternal lineage diversity that was present in the late nineteenth century.  相似文献

Summary. Female Photuris fireflies sequester defensive steroidal pyrones (lucibufagins) from male fireflies of the genus Photinus. Lucibufagin analyses of Photuris females and Photinus ignitus males show that the lucibufagin mixtures of predator and prey differ in their composition. Analyses of whole body extracts showed that P. ignitus males contain a mixture of eight non-glycosylated lucibufagins, composed mostly of compounds with two oxygenated positions in the steroidal A-ring (C-3, C-5). After feeding on P. ignitus males, Photuris females contain six major lucibufagins. Three of these compounds are not present in the prey, including the novel lucibufagin glycoside 5β,11α-dihydroxy-12-oxo-3β-O-β-D-xylopyranosylbufalin, and two other lucibufagins with a trioxygenated A-ring (C-2, C-3, C-5). These results indicate that Photuris females transform the sequestered lucibufagins both by glycosylation and oxidation, which could affect the systemic transportability of these compounds due to an increase in their polarity. Summary. The African stink ants (Pachycondyla tarsata) lay recruitment trails with secretions from sternal glands. The glandular secretions consist of 10 compounds, 9 of which have been chemically identified. One of the substances, 9-heptadecanone, elicits trail following behavior in P. tarsata workers that have before been stimulated by a sucessful scout ant. The distribution of the phyllosoma larvae and free-swimming pueruli of the Japanese spiny lobster Panulirus japonicus (von Siebold, 1824) has been studied off the south coast of Kyusyu Island. From 1992 to 1995, four research cruises were conducted on board the R.V. “Yoko-maru”. Cruises were mainly carried out over the new moon period between June and August along transect lines that cross the Kuroshio Current. In total, 89 later stage Form F phyllosoma (body lengths ≥20 mm) and 43 free-swimming pueruli of P. japonicus were caught; 94.4% of the later stage phyllosoma larvae were in the final stage. The phyllosoma were distributed widely in and south of the Kuroshio Current, where high-salinity (34.8) water exists at depths below about 80 m. Highest densities of the final phyllosoma larvae were observed in or near the  Kuroshio Current, and molting to the puerulus stage also occurred in the same area. Free-swimming pueruli were mainly sampled in and north of the Current. It is suggested that the pueruli of P. japonicus swim across the Kuroshio Current to settle in coastal areas. This study assesses the potential of the fluorochrome calcein for use as a growth marker in bivalve shell growth studies. Calcein solutions were administered in situ to the brown mussel Perna perna (Linneaus), both by injection and immersion, and the effect of calcein concentrations on fluorescent mark deposition and mussel mortality was investigated in the laboratory. Field investigations showed that, 1 month after administration, calcein injection (125 mg l−l) into the mantle cavity produced superior results to the immersion treatments (150 and 500 mg l−l). Both methods resulted in fluorescent mark incorporation at the growing edge, but during immersion general calcein deposition associated with endolith activity resulted in fluorescence that made identification of a distinct datum point difficult. In contrast, the injection method produced clearly defined growth marks, which were easily distinguished from autofluorescence and persisted without visible degradation for a minimum of 9 months. Shell growth rates estimated using the fluorescent mark as a datum point were similar to those from earlier studies using different methods. Laboratory investigations revealed that at␣calcein concentrations of 80 mg l−l and above, 100% of juvenile (20 to 30 mm) and adult mussels (60 to 70 mm) retained a visible growth mark, while at concentrations >160 mg l−l all marks were bright and clearly defined. No mussel mortality was exhibited at any time, even at calcein concentrations of 640 mg l−l, eight times higher than those required for mark deposition. These results suggest that, compared to traditional methods of bivalve growth determination, the use of fluorochromes presents a relatively inexpensive, non-invasive and rapid alternative. When using calcein as a growth marker, problems associated with some other fluorochromes (e.g. inconsistent mark incorporation, high post-treatment mortality) were not exhibited. By scoring the chromosome number of developing embryos, we show that the sex ratio bias of the African social spider Stegodyphus dumicola Pocock is the result of an overproduction of female embryos. Only 17% of 585 embryos sexed from 14 egg sacs were male, a significant departure from a 1:1 sex ratio. We also explored the possibility of direct control of the sex of individual offspring in this species by examining the variance in the number of males per sac and the spatial distribution of male and female embryos within the sacs. We postulated that a variance in the number of males per sac lower than binomial (i.e., underdispersed or precise sex ratios) or a non-random distribution of male embryos within the sacs would suggest direct control of the sex of individual offspring. We found that the variance in the number of males per sac was indistinguishable from binomial and significantly larger than expected under exact ratios. Likewise, the spatial distribution of male embryos within three sacs examined was no more clustered than expected by chance. The sex ratio biasing mechanism in this species, therefore, apparently only allows control of the mean sex ratio but not of its variance. We present randomization and Monte Carlo methods that can be applied to test for departures from a random spatial arrangement of male and female embryos in an egg mass and for departures from binomial or exact ratios when not all members of a clutch have been sexed.
