Phosphorus (P), aluminum (Al), and iron (Fe) stream chemistry were assessed for high discharge snowmelt events at the Bear Brook Watershed, Maine (BBWM) during December 2001 and February 2002 and compared with results from a January 1995 study of the same streams. The West Bear catchment has been subjected to artificial acidification since 1989. The East Bear catchment is the untreated reference. Total (acid soluble) Al, Fe, and P were positively correlated with discharge during the 2001–2002 events. However, dissolved P concentrations remained low (≤0.1 μmol L-1) during high discharge events as pH decreased in both streams. For example, in 2001, total P concentration increased to 1.7 μmol L-1 during the rising limb of the hydrograph in West Bear, approximately five times the value in East Bear. During the same event, in West Bear and East Bear dissolved Al concentrations increased to 21 and 6.3 μmol L-1, respectively, while total Al concentrations increased to 166 and 30 μmol L-1, respectively. Dissolved Fe concentrations remained ≤0.9 μmol L-1 in both streams during all study events. However, total Fe concentrations in 2001 increased to 239 and 4.1 μmol L-1 for West Bear and East Bear, respectively. Total Al and Fe declined parallel to total P after peaking during all study periods. Nearly all of the base cations were in dissolved form during the three events, indicating that total Al in West and East Bear Brooks is not associated with primary minerals such as feldspars. We conclude that particulate Al, Fe, and P are chemically linked during transport at high discharge in these episodically and chronically acidified streams.  相似文献

We examined the short-term separate and combined effects of simulated nitrogen (N) deposition (fertilization) and ozone (O(3)) exposure on California black oak seedlings (Quercus kelloggii Newb.), an ecologically important tree of the San Bernardino Mountains downwind of Los Angeles. Realistic concentrations of O(3) were found to cause statistically and biologically significant negative effects on plant health, including lowered photosynthetic ability, lowered water use efficiency, and increased leaf chlorosis and necrosis. When subjected to abrupt changes in light levels, O(3)-exposed plants showed both a slower and smaller response than O(3)-free plants. Fertilized plants exhibited a significantly greater pre- to post-treatment decline in A at saturated [CO(2)] and a significantly lower level of post-treatment chlorosis than unfertilized plants. Fertilization tended to reduce plant sensitivity to O(3).  相似文献

Using non-lethal tissue sampling for stable isotope analysis has become standard in many fields, but not for fishes, despite being desirable when species are rare or protected, when repeated sampling of individuals is required or where removal may bias other analyses. Here, we examine the utility of fish dorsal fin membrane as an alternative to muscle for analyzing δ13C and δ15N ratios in two reef fish species (blue cod Parapercis colias and spotty Notolabrus celidotus) that have differing feeding modes. Both species exhibited evidence of size-based feeding from fin δ15N values, but not from muscle. Blue cod fin δ15N increased steadily throughout the sampled size range (213–412 mm fork length), whereas spotty exhibited a distinct ontogenetic diet shift at approximately 120–140 mm fork length after which size-based feeding did not occur. Fin membrane was higher than muscle in δ13C in both species and in δ15N for blue cod, but fin δ15N was lower than muscle in spotty. The δ13C and δ15N fin–muscle offsets were constant in spotty regardless of size, while in blue cod, δ13C was constant with fish size, but δ15N offsets increased with increasing fish size. Non-lethal sampling utilizing fin tissue can be employed to estimate stable isotope values of muscle in fishes, but it is necessary to assess relationships among tissues and the effects of fish size on isotope values a priori for each species studied. Our data indicated that fin membrane may be a more sensitive tissue than muscle for detecting size-based feeding in some fish species using stable isotopes. A critical literature review revealed inconsistencies in tissue types tested, little understanding of tissue-specific trophic shift or turnover rates, and pseudo-replicated analyses leading to erroneous postulating of 1:1 relationships between tissues.  相似文献

Many poorly water-soluble compounds fail regulatory ready biodegradation tests as the method of test material preparation limits the bioavailability of the chemical. The recognised method for delivery of poorly soluble materials into biodegradability tests consists of coating test material inside the test vessel or onto inert substrates (i.e., glass cover slide, boiling beads, filter paper, or Teflon stir bar) that are placed inside the vessels. Volatile solvents are often used to augment this process. Although these substrates work fairly well for delivering many poorly soluble materials into biodegradability tests, they have not been effective in keeping low density, poorly water-soluble substances in the test medium. Soon after medium is added to the test vessels, these chemicals break loose from the substrates and float on the surface where they have limited contact with micro-organisms in the test medium. Hence, there is a reduced potential for measuring substantial biodegradability in the test. This paper describes the work undertaken to establish a standard method of adding low density, poorly water-soluble substances into test vessels of biodegradability studies to ensure these materials remain in contact with micro-organisms in the test medium. The substances are prepared for testing by adsorption onto silica gel followed by dispersion into the culture medium. This method of delivery may provide greater intra- and inter-laboratory consistency in biodegradability test results for low density, poorly water-soluble substances and it may more closely mimic the probable transport and fate of these substances in the environment.  相似文献
