Continued resource degradation in various areas of the Great Lakes has led to doubts of the adequacy of conventional science and management approaches. The need for a more holistic approach, identified as an ecosystem approach, appears now to be more widely accepted although progress with implementation is slow. We argue here that ecosystem science is an integral part of an ecosystem approach and is a prerequisite to effective management planning.One of the problems of implementing an ecosystem approach is forging the link between ecosystem based research and management. For Green Bay, Wisconsin, USA, certain structural and functional qualities of the ecosystem have been used to define operational guides and to formulate management objectives. / One attempt to quantify targets for rehabilitating degraded aquatic ecosystems has been through a United States-Canada program to develop and implement comprehensive remedial action plans (RAPs) to restore beneficial uses in 42 Great Lakes Areas of Concern. The International Joint Commission has facilitated agreement on listing/delisting guidelines for determining when use impairments exist in areas of concern and when uses have been restored, while federal/state/provincial governments and local stakeholders have provided leadership in establishing quantitative targets for restoring uses and in determining how to achieve them. The listing/delisting guidelines have been instrumental in helping reach agreement on problem definition (lack of agreement on problem definition has historically been used as a reason to delay action) and reaching agreement on quantitative targets for restoring uses. Quantitative, ecosystem-based targets are being used to drive the RAP process, help organizations pursue a common mission of restoring uses, and help achieve greater accountability. As a priority, the target-setting process must also recognize the importance of establishing both short- and long-term milestones in order to measure and celebrate incremental progress in restoring uses.KEY WORDS: Use impairments; Restoring uses; Quantitative targets  相似文献

Lakes and streams are acidified by direct precipitation and water channeled through nearby soils, but water in low base-saturation soils can produce highly acidic percolate after prolonged contact and subsequent degassing in surface waters. Theories advanced by Reuss (1983), Reuss and Johnson (1985), and Seip and Rustad (1984) suggest that soils with less than 15% base saturation are susceptible to soil-water pH depression of up to 0.4 unit, which is sufficient to cause negative alkalinity in soil solutions. High concentrations of mobile anions (notably sulfate) are responsible for the negative alkalinity and these solutions on CO2 degassing in surface waters can retain acidities equivalent to a pH value of 5.0 or less. This mechanism purports to explain why some lakes acidify when they are surrounded by acid soils and cation leaching is not required.Ambient precipitation set to pH 5.4 and pH 4.2 was applied to columns of low base-saturated, sand, soils, starting in 1985. The columns (15 cm diameter and 150 cm long) were collected from soils with base saturations falling into one of three groups (0–10, 10–20, and 20–40%) from national forests in the Superior Uplands area (includes Boundary Waters Canoe Area, Rainbow Lakes, Sylvania, Moquah Barrens, and other Wilderness and Natural areas). The soils were Haplorthods and Udipsamments mainly from outwash plains.The soil columns were instrumented and reburied around a subterranean structure used to collect leachate water and to maintain natural temperature, air, and light conditions. Three humus treatments were applied to soil column (none, northern hardwood, and jack pine) to measure the effect of natural acidification compared to acidification by acid precipitation. The cores were treated with precipitation buffered to pH 5.4 to simulate natural rain and pH 4.2 to simulate acid rain.Columns were treated in 1985 and 1986 with approximately 200 cm of buffered precipitation each year over the frost-free season. Data is now being analyzed for the 1986 treatment year. In leachate collected from the upper horizons of the soil colums, there was a significant difference in pH, alkalinity, nitrate, and sulfate concentrations between the pH 5.4 and pH 4.2 precipitation treatments. This difference, however, disappears at the bottom of the columns. This could be partly due to exchange reactions in the B horizon. The pH and alkalinities are higher in bottom leachate. Chloride and nitrate also increased significantly due mainly to concentrating effects. Even with a pickup of sulfate in the B horizon, sulfate adsorption decreased bottom leachate concentrations well below surface values.Alkalinity, pH, and sulfate concentration in the leachate decreased over the treatment season. Nitrate concentration increased by 4- to 5-fold over the season. Leachate from the bottom of the soil columns is becoming more acidic with time with negative alkalinities appearing more frequently in columns with soils of lower base saturation. There were some significant alkalinity differences due to humus treatments; however, these were not consistent between pH treatments, and need further study. The Benguela Current Large Marine Ecosystem off southwest Africa is a regionally valued system because of its biological productivity, which supports high biomass throughout the foodweb, and a rich diversity of habitats and species. However, the region is exposed to numerous anthropogenic pressures that are likely to escalate under future economic growth. In response, the Benguela Current Commission called for a spatial biodiversity assessment (BCC-SBA) to identify conservation priorities, including potential areas for marine protected areas. The systematic conservation-planning approach to this assessment requires a fine-scale map of coastal habitats, which was not previously available for the region. Our aim was to undertake this mapping, within tight logistic and resource limitations. We used a previously derived methodology for mapping the distribution of coastal habitats from aerial imagery. The Benguela coast is approximately 5,047 km long. Half of this extent is sandy beach, a third is rocky and mixed shores, 13 % comprises lagoonal features, and the remainder (4 %) comprises estuaries and offshore islands. The distribution and extent of these coastal habitats differs substantially alongshore (i.e. with latitude), with conditions ranging north–south from hot, humid mangrove-lined lagoons, to hyper-arid coastal desert sandy beaches. Patterns in regional geology, climate and oceanography are proposed as the main drivers of spatial heterogeneity in coastal habitat types. The resulting ecological and socio-economic wealth requires proactive protection (supported through the BCC-SBA, for example), to ensure sustainable utilization of the rich natural resources, and persistence of these resources for the benefit of current and future generations.  相似文献

Quantifying sessile marine invertebrate recruitment often requires destructive sampling or extrapolation from artificial substrata, the latter introducing the danger of artifacts. We measured intertidal mussel recruitment into mussel beds and into brushes at three-month intervals for five years across 3,200 km of southern Africa and determined substrata effects on recruitment rate. Recruitment into mussel beds showed a strong, coast-wide gradient, with high recruitment on the West coast, diminishing on the South coast, and increasing slightly on the East coast. At scales of 10 s of km, brushes reflected natural temporal recruitment variability, with a strong significant linear correlation between recruitment into brushes and into mussel beds. However, the relationship became semi-logarithmic when comparing among locations at a scale of 100 s of km. Artificial substrata thus reflect local natural settlement well but may be a poor indicator of it when spatial scales are large, particularly when mussel bed topography is complex, or localities have very different recruitment densities.  相似文献

Total body dose of 2,4-D was determined in 10 volunteers following exposure to sprayed turf 1 hour following application and in 10 volunteers exposed 24 hours following application. Each group of 10 volunteers was divided in half and five wore long pants, a short-sleeved shirt, socks and closed footwear. The other five wore shorts and a short-sleeved shirt and were barefoot. All volunteers were exposed to a 2 by 15 m area of turf for 1 hour during which they alternated between walking and sitting or lying on the turf surface for intervals of 5 minutes. Dislodgeable residues of 2,4-D taken during the exposure sessions showed a rapid decline from 1 hour following application (8%) to 24 hours following application (1%). No detectable residues were found in 4-day urine samples supplied by volunteers except for 3 people who were barefoot and wearing shorts and contacted the turf 1 hour following 2,4-D application. The highest dose was measured in a volunteer who removed his shirt for 30 minutes of the exposure session (426 micrograms). Exposure levels of the other two volunteers who wore the prescribed clothing were lower (153 and 103 micrograms). No detectable residues were found in urine samples supplied by volunteers exposed to sprayed turf 24 hours following application. These results indicate that at the doses measured, exposure to sprayed turf should present little risk in humans. However, people can reduce exposure to non-detectable levels by remaining off treated turf for a period of 24 hours or until after rainfall or irrigation so that dislodgeable residues and therefore potential exposure are essentially zero.  相似文献

Residents of Xuan Wei County in China have unusually high lung cancer mortality that cannot be attributed to tobacco use or occupational exposure. They are exposed to smoke from unvented, open pit coal or wood fires (often used for cooking and heating). The variation in lung cancer rates among communes within the county suggests that indoor combustion of smoky coal may be the prime determinant of lung cancer. To characterize the air in Xuan Wei homes, samples of air particles and semivolatile organic compounds were collected from homes located in two communes; one commune has a high rate of lung cancer, and the other has a low rate. Samples collected in the commune where the lung cancer rate is high and where smoky coal is the predominant fuel contained high concentrations of small particles with high organic content; organic extracts of these samples were mutagenic. Samples from homes in the wood-burning commune, which has a low rate of lung cancer, consisted mostly of larger particles of lower organic content and mutagenicity. The smoky coal sample was a mouse skin carcinogen and was a more potent initiator of skin tumors in comparison to the wood or smokeless coal sample.  相似文献
