Stawell Gold Mine in NW Victoria, Australia, mines ores that contain large concentrations of As and significant quantities
of the metals Pb and Cr. The aim of this research was to understand the dispersion, enrichment and probable exposure of these
potentially hazardous elements around the mine site. Fifty-five surface soil samples were collected near the mine (<15 km)
and analysed by ICP-MS/OES following bioavailable and four-acid extractions. Soils near the mine show greater concentrations
of As, Cr and Pb than those near a regionally determined background. This is attributed to the combination of a natural geochemical
halo around mineralization and anthropogenic dispersion due to mining and urbanization. Total As concentrations were between
16 and 946 mg kg−1 near the mine in a regional background of 1–16 mg kg−1. Total Cr concentrations were between 18 and 740 mg kg−1 near the mine in a regional background of 26–143 mg kg−1. Total Pb concentrations were between 12 and 430 mg kg−1 near the mine in a regional background of 9–23 mg kg−1. Dispersion of contaminant elements from the present ore processing is <500 m. The most enriched soils occur close to the
town and are unrelated to present mining practices. The bioavailable As, Cr and Pb, soil ingestion rates and Risk Reference
Doses were used to estimate health risks. An average toddler (12 kg) would need to consume at least 1.5 g, and most likely
12 g, of soil per day to show some symptoms of As toxicity. The maximum measured bioavailable As would pose a risk at average
ingestion rates of 200 mg per day. Individuals with soil-eating disorders would exceed the safe daily consumption limits for
As, and potentially Cr and Pb. Small children are not typically exposed to soil everyday, very few have soil eating disorders,
and, therefore, the health risk from the soils around the mine is minimal. 相似文献

A preliminary evaluation of compound-specific isotope analysis (CSIA) as a novel, alternative method for identifying source correlation compounds in soils contaminated with residual heavy or weathered petroleum wastes is presented. Oil-contaminated soil microcosms were established using soil (sandy-loam, non-carbonaceous cley) amended with ballast-, crude- or No.6 fuel oil. Microcosms were periodically sampled over 256 days and delta(13)C values (which express the ratio of (13)C to (12)C) determined at each time point for five n-alkanes and the isoprenoid norpristane using gas chromatography-isotope ratio mass spectrometry (GC-IRMS). Although some temporal variation was observed, no significant temporal shifts in the delta(13)C values for the five n-alkanes were measured in all three oils. Isoprenoid isotope ratios (delta(13)C) appeared to be least affected by biotransformation, especially in the No.6 fuel oil. The research suggests that the delta(13)C of isoprenoids such as norpristane, may be of use as source correlation parameters. 相似文献

A fugacity approach was evaluated to reconcile loadings of vinyl chloride (chloroethene), benzene, 1,3-butadiene and trichloroethylene in waste with concentrations observed in landfill gas monitoring studies. An evaluative environment derived from fictitious but realistic properties such as volume, composition, and temperature, constructed with data from the Brogborough landfill (UK) test cells was used to test a fugacity approach to generating the source term for use in landfill gas risk assessment models (e.g. GasSim). SOILVE, a dynamic Level II model adapted here for landfills, showed greatest utility for benzene and 1,3-butadiene, modelled under anaerobic conditions over a 10 year simulation. Modelled concentrations of these components (95,300 microg m(-3); 43 microg m(-3)) fell within measured ranges observed in gas from landfills (24,300-180,000 microg m(-3); 20-70 microg m(-3)). This study highlights the need (i) for representative and time-referenced biotransformation data; (ii) to evaluate the partitioning characteristics of organic matter within waste systems and (iii) for a better understanding of the role that gas extraction rate (flux) plays in producing trace component concentrations in landfill gas. 相似文献

The amphipod Gammarus zaddachi (Sexton) conducts extensive migrations along estuaries from near the limit of tidal influence in winter to more downstream reaches (where reproduction occurs) in spring. A return migration then takes place, primarily by juveniles, until the seaward areas are depopulated in winter. The present study was conducted between 1988 and 1990 in the Conwy Estuary, North Wales. This represents the first investigation on this species in a strongly tidal estuary, where the amphipods appear to migrate vertically into the water column on flood or ebb tides to control horizontal transport and to maintain preferred distributions. The timing of vertical migration seems to be largely controlled by an endogenous circatidal swimming rhythm. Phasing of peak activity relative to the time of expected high tide varies with season; upstream migrants in the autumn showed peak activity at the time of expected high tide, while in the spring at the time of downstream migration the rhythm was phase-delayed, with peak activity during the expected ebb tide. Together with the season, position along the estuary also affected the timing of peak endogenous activity; downstream migrants, originally active on the ebb tide and experimentally displaced seawards, showed a phase-advance of the rhythm relative to the time of high tide. Salinity-preference behaviour also varied between different developmental stages, with ovigerous females (downstream migrants) showing no preference between fresh and saline water, and juveniles (upstream migrants) showing a significant preference for freshwater. The interactions of endogenous rhythmicity and salinity-preference behaviour are discussed as controlling factors of migration in this species. 相似文献
