This investigation used UV light of 365 nm and titanium dioxide in aqueous suspension to study the photocatalytic reaction of o-methylbenzoic acid under the influence of pH values, anion additives and the varieties of titanium dioxide. From experimental results, under the condition of 5 g/l TiO2, pH 3 and light intensity of 2.45 mW/cm2, 0.1 mM of o-methylbenzoic acid could be completely decomposed in 2 h. The reaction was faster with lowering pH, and was found to be apparent first-order following Langmuir-Hinshelwood model. In the presence of anion additives, the inhibitive effect of chloride ions was larger than that of sulfate ions under acidic condition for Degussa brand titanium dioxide, but without influence using Janssen brand. Both brands, however, promoted the mineralization of o-methylbenzoic acid (o-MBA).  相似文献

We report on a woman with four successive pregnancies affected with X-linked hydrocephalus (XLH). The first child had prenatal craniocentesis and died in utero. The second child had a postnatal shunting operation, but suffers from severe growth and mental retardation at 5 years of age. In the third pregnancy, prenatal ultrasound detected hydrocephalus at the 16th and 20th weeks of gestation and the pregnancy was terminated. In the fourth pregnancy, ultrasound scanning at the 17th and 20th weeks of gestation revealed no remarkable findings, but hydrocephalus was detected at the 24th week. Autopsy confirmed the prenatal diagnosis. DNA polymorphism analysis of the Bell site of exons 17–18 of factor VIII gene of the woman and her last two fetuses seemed to be compatible with a linkage between the XLH locus and factor VIII gene. Although XLH has a variable presentation of ventriculomegaly, ultrasound scanning is still a useful tool for prenatal diagnosis at present. Earlier and more accurate prenatal diagnosis will be feasible with molecular analysis of the XLH locus or its flanking regions.  相似文献

The distribution of nano/micron dicarboxylic acids and inorganic ions in size-segregated suburban aerosol of southern Taiwan was studied for a PM episode and a non-episodic pollution period, revealing for the first time the distribution of these nanoscale particles in suburban aerosols. Inorganic species, especially nitrate, were present in higher concentrations during the PM episode. A combination of gas-to-nuclei conversion of nitrate particles and accumulation of secondary photochemical products originating from traffic-related emissions was likely a crucial cause of the PM episode. Sulfate, ammonium, and oxalic acid were the dominant anion, cation, and dicarboxylic acid, respectively, accounting for a minimum of 49% of the total anion, cation or dicarboxylic acid mass. Peak concentrations of these species occurred at 0.54 μm in the droplet mode during both non-episodic and PM episode periods, indicating an association with cloud-processed particles. On average, sulfate concentration was 16–17 times that of oxalic acid. Oxalic acid was nevertheless the most abundant dicarboxylic acid during both periods, followed by succinic, malonic, maleic, malic and tartaric acid. The mass median aerodynamic diameter (MMAD) of oxalic acid was 0.77 μm with a bi-modal presence at 0.54 μm and 18 nm during non-episodic pollution and an MMAD of 0.67 μm with mono-modal presence at 0.54 μm in PM episode aerosol. The concomitant formation of malonic acid and oxalic acid was attributed to in-cloud processes. During the PM episode in the 5–100 nm nanoscale range, an oxalic acid/sulfate mass ratio of 40.2–82.3% suggested a stronger formation potential for oxalic acid than for sulfate in the nuclei mode. For total cations (TC), total inorganic anions (TIA) and total dicarboxylic acids (TDA), major contributing particles were in the droplet mode, with least in the nuclei mode. The ratio of TDA to TIA in the nuclei mode increased greatly from 8.40% during the non-episodic pollution period to 28.08% during the PM episode, favoring dicarboxylic acid formation in the nuclei mode. The evidence suggests stronger formation strength and contribution potential exists for dicarboxylic acids than for inorganic salts in nanoscale particles, especially in PM episode aerosol.  相似文献

The spatial relationships and linkage of the detrital flows among the water column, the sediment and the oyster Crassostrea gigas cultured in the water column were examined by using stable carbon isotopes (δ13C) in a tropical shallow lagoon from October 1996 to June 1997. The lagoon is located in southwestern Taiwan and is isolated from the sea by sand barriers except at two tidal inlets. It receives freshwater mainly from two rivers. A total of 12 stations were set up along three transect lines, each running across the lagoon from riverine to tidal inlet localities. The δ13C values of the water-column POM exhibited a marked sea–river gradient, with values depleted from a high of −21.7‰ at seaward stations to a low of −28.2‰ at riverine stations; those in the sedimentary POM (<62 μm grain size) also revealed this trend, but to a lesser extent. Oysters of two known ages, 6 months old (“old oysters”) and newly settled individuals (“young oysters”), were transplanted from one station to each of the remaining stations, while some were left at the original station. Values of δ13C in the muscle of transplanted oysters changed in parallel with the sea–river gradient of δ13C in POM (decreasing from −16.0 to −18.5‰ in old oysters and from −16.8 to −21.9‰ in young ones). The spatial sea–river gradient of the oyster's δ13C is related not only to the distance between the site that the oyster inhabits and sea or riverine environment, but also to the tidal flow pattern that surrounds its feeding place. Although the δ13C value of the sedimentary POM was correlated with that of the water-column POM, the δ13C value of the oyster tissue was significantly correlated with that of the water-column POM, but not with that of the sedimentary POM. In order to understand the fate of pesticides in marine environments, concentrations of pesticides and different carbonaceous fractions were determined for surface sediments in the Danshui River and nearby coastal areas of Taiwan. The major compounds detected were tetrachlorobenzene, HCHs, chlordane, aldrin, DDDs, DDEs and DDTs. Total concentrations of pesticides in the sediments ranged from not detectable to 23 ng g(-1), with the maximum value detected near the discharge point of the marine outfall from the Pali sewage treatment plant. These results confirm that pesticides persist in estuarine and nearby coastal environments of the Danshui River well after their ban. Concentrations of total pesticides significantly correlate with concentrations of total organic carbon and black carbon in these sediments, suggesting that total organic carbon and black carbon regulate the distribution of trace organic pollutants in fluvial and coastal marine sediments.  相似文献

Polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) concentrations in sediment and fish from 12 principal rivers in Taiwan were investigated to determine their association with water quality parameters as well as the biota-sediment accumulation factor (BSAF) in fish with different living patterns. The highest PBDE concentration in sediment was found in the Bajhang River (261 ng g?1 dry weight (d.w.)) and the lowest in the Beinan River and the Da-an River (0.17 ng g?1 d.w.). The PBDE concentrations in fish samples ranged from 1.28 ng g?1 d.w. (Oreochromis niloticus niloticus) in the Yanshuei River to 33.7 ng g?1 d.w. (Varico rhinos barbatulus) in the Da-an River. We conclude that PBDEs contamination in sediment was significantly affected by NH3–N, pH, and DO. The BSAF results showed a parabolic trend from low- to high-brominated BDEs. Fish easily accumulated the congeners BDE-47, -100, -119, -126, and -154 from sediment. The BSAF decreased in the following order: PeBDE > HxBDE > TeBDE > other BDEs. Principle component analysis showed that demersal fish have different PBDE sources than do pelagic fish. We conclude that living and feeding habits are critical factors affecting PBDE accumulation in fish.  相似文献

Bioretention is a low-impact technology used for the treatment of stormwater runoff in developed areas. The fates of mineral nitrogen compounds in two bioretention columns (RP1 and RP2) with different media-layering characteristics were investigated under multiple loadings of simulated urban runoff. The immediate capture of nitrogen was evaluated, with nitrogen transformation reactions that occurred during the drying periods between rainfall events. A greater proportion of ammonium was removed from runoff in RP2 (68 +/- 16%), which had a high permeability layer over a lower permeability layer, than in RP1 (12 +/- 6%), which had the inverse configuration. Both column systems demonstrated nitrate export (9 +/- 32% and 54 +/- 22% greater than input for RP1 and RP2, respectively), attributed to washout of nitrate resulting from nitrification processes between runoff loading events. Bioretention media with a less permeable bottom soil layer could form an anoxic/anaerobic zone for promoting nitrification/denitrification processes.  相似文献

Abstract

In this study, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emissions from two batch-type medical waste incinerators (MWIs), one with a mechanical grate and the other with a fixed grate, both operated by a medical center, were assessed. Both MWIs shared the same air-pollution control devices (APCDs), with an electrostatic precipitator and a wet scrubber installed in series. Results show that when APCDs were used, total PAHs and total benzo- [a]pyrene equivalent (total BaPeq) emission concentrations of both MWIs were reduced from 2220 to 1870 µg/m3 and 50 to 12.4 µg/m3, respectively. We used the Industrial Source Complex Short Term model (ISCST) to estimate the ground-level concentrations of the residential area and the traffic intersection located at the down-wind side of the two MWIs. For the traffic intersection, we found both total PAHs and total BaPeq transported from MWIs to both studied areas were not significant. For the residential area, similar results were found when APCDs were used in MWIs. When APCDs were not included, we found that total PAHs transported from MWIs accounted for <12%, but total BaPeq accounted for >90%, of the on-site measured concentrations. These results suggest that the use of proper APCDs during incineration would significantly reduce the carcinogenic potencies associated with PAH emissions from MWIs to the residential area.  相似文献
