Factors affecting distribution of macroalgal periphyton were examined during a complete seasonal cycle in Tapong Bay, a eutrophic tropical lagoon in southern Taiwan. Water residence time varied from a few days to weeks. Total biomass and species richness declined with increasing residence time. However, they appeared to exhibit a unimodal seasonal pattern across all study sites, with blooms and greater richness in winter and spring and lower values in summer and fall. Nonmetric multidimensional scaling ordination of macroalgal communities reveals a clear gradual continuum of changes in species composition along the flushing gradient, suggesting the communities were primarily structured by site, and secondarily by season. The fast-flushing region was dominated by the chlorophycean genus Ulva, which was replaced by Enteromorpha intestinalis at mid-flushing levels, while the cyanobacterium Lyngbya majuscula was the dominant species in the slow-flushing region. Tissue nitrogen, but not tissue phosphorus, of these dominant species increased with increasing nutrient availability as a result of slow flushing. Our results suggest that water motion was an important selective factor for the spatial dominance of macroalgal species in Tapong Bay. This study demonstrates that species-dependent ordination is more sensitive in discriminating between sites than are species-independent measures such as total biomass and nutrient content when monitoring coastal eutrophication in the tropics. However, more-sensitive ordination provides only an early warning that a community is changing; less-sensitive measures are also required to indicate the magnitude and type of these environmental changes.Communicated by T. Fifteen insecticides, which were banned in Vietnam in the period from 1990 to 1998, were chosen for the investigation of surface water samples in Hanoi and its surroundings. The investigation was focused on an area of approximately 30 by 20 km. Thirty water samples, in total were analysed: 11 samples from the Red river, seven from the Duong river, four from various lakes (West lake, Thuyen Quang, Bay Mau, Ba Mau), six from irrigation canals and two samples from wells. The procedure was repeated in November 1998 and in August 1999. The results showed that the contamination of the banned pesticides was highest in the rivers and then in the irrigation canals, followed by the lakes and wells. These pesticides could hardly be determined in just two drinking water samples (wells) and their concentrations rarely exceeded detection limits (0.05-0.25 ng l(-1)). The mean concentrations of sigmaHCHs (alpha, beta, gamma, delta-HCH) and sigmaDDTs (2,4'-, 4,4'-DDE; 2,4'-, 4,4'-DDD; 2,4'-, 4,4'-DDT) in the rivers were 17.2 +/- 71.8 and 43.7 +/- 79.9 ng l(-1) in the dry season (DS, November 1998), 29.3 +/- 117 and 56.1 +/- 65.6 ng l(-1) in the rainy season (RS, August 1999), respectively. However, the highest concentration of DDTs detected in a river sample (DS): 0.324 microg l(-1) was much lower than their allowable limit of concentration in surface waters, which is accorded with Criteria of Vietnam (1995) (DDTs < 10 microg l(-1)). Moreover, endrin, heptachlor, aldrin were also detected in most of water samples with considerable mean concentrations in rivers: 25.3 +/- 40.5, 17.4 +/- 23.8, 11.0 +/- 9.02 ng l(-1) in the DS and 18.5 +/- 23.2, 19.3 +/- 29.0, 12.8 +/- 8.44 ng l(-1) in the RS, respectively. Heptachlor epoxide (isomer A) and dieldrin were detected in some water samples with lowest concentrations.  相似文献

Pentachlorophenol (PCP) is a wood preserving agent that is commonly found in contaminated soils at wood treatment sites. The catalytic properties of Fe+3-resin for the oxidation of PCP in aqueous solution and soil suspension with H2O2 were tested. Batch tests in aqueous solution were performed at various dosages of catalyst and H2O2, and reaction temperatures. The results showed that the oxidation of PCP in aqueous solution depends on the dose of H2O2 and the temperature. Essentially complete oxidation of 100 mgl(-1) PCP was obtained with 0.5% Fe+3-resin catalyst, 0.1 M H2O2 and at a reaction temperature of 80 degrees C. The oxidation of PCP achieved in three different soil suspensions was more than 94% within 30-50 min. Moreover, it was demonstrated that the same Fe+3-resin could be reused for at least six cycles of PCP oxidation in soil solutions without loss in efficiency unless the pH of the reaction falls below 5. It was proposed that the loss in used Fe+3-resin catalyst activity could be related to the leaching of Fe+3 at low pH.  相似文献

Pollutant concentrations detected in oysters from 12 different culture areas of Taiwan (especially for the Hsiangshan area and the Machu Islands) from 1991-98 were evaluated to investigate potential carcinogenic (inorganic As and organochlorine pesticides) and non-carcinogenic (Cu, Zn, Cd and inorganic As) risk to the public from ingestion of the oysters. The highest geometric mean (GM) Cu and Zn concentrations of 1108 (range 113-2806) and 1567 (range 303-3593) microg/g dry weight were obtained in oysters from the Hsiangshan coastal area. The maximum GM Cd and As concentrations of 6.82 and 19.3 microg/g dry weight were found in oysters from the Machu Islands area. The p,p'-DDE values range from not detectable in Penghu Islands' oysters to 164 ng/g dry weight in Machu Islands' oysters. The highest tDDT (sum of p,p'-DDE, p,p'-DDD and p,p'-DDT) concentrations of 337 and 340 ng/g dry weight were found in oysters from Kimmen and Machu Islands, respectively. A calculated target hazard quotient (THQ; daily intake/reference dose) of 11.4 (based on 139 g oysters/day) for Cu caused by consuming oysters from the Hsiangshan area is higher than that from other areas (range 0.124-5.95). The highest average Cu intake from Hsiangshan's oysters for individuals is 11.4 times (i.e. THQ=11.4) more than that of reference dose (40 microg/kg/day). However, the maximum THQ values for Cd and As caused by consuming oysters collected from the Machu Islands were 5.57 and 2.63 for Cd and As, respectively. Generally, the results of THQ showed that if only the maximally exposed individuals were considered, the value of 65.4% for oyster was higher than 1.0 in comparison with reference dose. All cancer risk estimates for inorganic As from consuming oysters were higher than 10(-6) (range from 128x10(-6) to 509x10(-6) for maximally exposed individuals and range from 17.1x10(-6) to 68.0x10(-6) for typically exposed individuals, respectively); that is the risk of the lower end of the range of acceptable risk. The highest risk estimate for inorganic As was 509x10(-6) for consumption of oysters by Machu Islands' residents. The lifetime cancer risks of 19.0x10(-6) for tDDT by consuming oysters from the Machu Islands was higher than those from the Penghu Islands (0.37x10(-6)). Therefore, the sum of lifetime cancer risks for tDDT and inorganic As had the highest risks (total risk=528x10(-6)) of consuming oysters from the Machu Islands. Furthermore, a 10(-6) upper limit on lifetime risk as the health protection standard would require maximum oyster consumption rates of approximately 0.26 g/day.  相似文献

Low-concentration acidic and basic-waste gas pollutants contribute significantly in the total emission of a facility. Previous results show that the control of high volumetric flow rate (approximately 500 m3/min), low-concentration acidic (< 1 ppm by vol) and basic (< 3 ppm by vol) gases from semiconductor process vent, by conventional wet scrubbing technique is a challenging task. This work was targeted to enhance the performance of packed beds for high-volumetric flow rate, low-concentration acidic (HF, HCl), and basic (NH3)-waste gases from the semiconductor manufacturing process. The methodology used to meet the goal was the application of fine-water mist over the inlet stream before entering to the packed bed and use of the surfactant with mist/packed-bed liquid in low concentration. An experimental study was carried out in two acid-packed beds to optimize the operating conditions, such as pH of the liquid, circulating liquid flow rate, blow-down cycle, and so forth. The relationship among liquid pH, liquid ionic concentration, and the removal efficiency of the packed bed for the pollutants has been discussed considering chemical equilibrium, two-film theory, and Henry's law. For the potential utilization of scrubbing water, the dependency of the efficiency on blow-down cycle was studied, and a mechanism is suggested. The proposed water-mist surfactant system was installed in two acid-packed beds, and performance of the packed beds was compared. The background efficiencies of the acid-packed beds for HF, HCl, and NH3 were found max to be (n = 11) 53, 40, and 27%, whereas after installation of the system, they increased significantly and became 76 +/- 13% (n = 10), 76 +/- 8% (n = 7), and 78 +/- 7% (n = 7), respectively, for inlet concentrations of HF and HCl < 1 ppm and NH3 < 14 ppm. The mechanism by which the surfactants operate to enhance the removal in scrubbing process is suggested considering the hydrodynamic effect and the interfacial effect with the charge-generating characteristic of surfactants on water surface, when dissolved into water. The results show that a proposed rectification system can effectively reduce the emission rates below the regulatory level (0.6 kg/hr) at the present conditions of the facility.  相似文献

The metal emissions from three incinerators burning different feedstock in Taiwan were characterized in this study. It was found that the Incinerators A and B, treating pig carcasses and animal (including pigs) carcasses, respectively, had much higher metal concentrations in stack flue gases than Incinerator C that combusted medical wastes. However, Incinerator A obtained relative lower metal contents in fly ash and bottom ash than the other two incinerators, mainly because the former used a much lower feedstock rate (although burning at a lower temperature) than the latter. For all the incinerators, (1) Fe, Ni, Pb, and Zn were dominant in both the fly ash and bottom ash while most of the Cd and Pb (more volatile) were present in the fly ash; (2) Fe emission factor was the highest and Zn/Pb/Ni/Cr emission factors were greater than those of Mn/Cd/Cu; (3) the Cu emission factors in bottom ash were relatively higher in comparison with those in fly ash; and (4) indicatory metals were the same (Fe, Zn, Pb, and Cu). The metal emission factors obtained from the livestock incinerators were much higher than those reported from MSW incinerators. Likewise, crematories that burn human cadavers must create similar pollution issues since metal supplements are part of human's normal diets. This causes an environmental concern and this work has important ramifications both in technical and regulatory decisions.  相似文献

Reactive black B (RBB) is a group of azo dyes that are widely used in the textile industry. In this study, a new microbial strain was isolated from azo dye contaminated river sediment which is capable of degrading RBB. The strain was identified as Bacillus cereus strain HJ-1 by 16S rRNA gene sequences analysis. The optimal conditions for RBB decolorization by B. cereus strain HJ-1 are: 25 °C, pH 8, 1 CMC of triton X-100, 0.15 g L?1 of added yeast extract, 0.125 g L?1 of added glucose and static culture. Then the toxicity of RBB on the green algae Chlorella vulgaris was determined. The results showed that the median effective concentration (EC50) of RBB for C. vulgaris is 48 mg L?1 and toxicity will really decrease after decolorization. In the end, B. cereus strain HJ-1 was amended into the origin river sediment and analyzed the whole microbial community structure of river sediment samples by PCR-DGGE technique. The result showed that B. cereus strain HJ-1 could survive in the river sediment after 12 d of incubation. Based on this work, we hope that these findings could provide some useful information for applying the decolorization of RBB in our environment.  相似文献

Abstract

Terrigenous inputs and sedimentary fluxes of trace metals were studied to understand the metal sources, transport and sinks in the southeastern Taiwan Strait. the major terrigenous metals come from seven major rivers in the southwestern Taiwan, even though significant fractions of most metals were retained in estuaries. the net fluxes of river borne metals contributed from 65% (Pb) to 92% (Fe, Zn) of total inputs. the remainder was attributed to marine sewage discharges (0.6–6.9%) and atmospheric inputs (5.3–31.5%). Sedimentary fluxes of trace metals were spatially variable as a result of derivation from site-specific sedimentation rates and metal distributions in sediments. in spite of imbalance between sources and sinks of trace metals, an accumulation of metals in the sediment of southeastern Taiwan Strait was found for sites close to Taiwan Island. Surface enrichment of metals in near-shore sediments beginning around 1976 was coincident with a time of industrial boom in Taiwan. the metal enrichment hierarchy was found as (Cd, Pb < Cu < Zn < Mn, Fe).  相似文献
