Resource managers require objective methodologies to optimize decisions related to forest road deactivation and other aspects of road management, especially in steep terrain, where road-related slope failures inflict extensive environmental damage. Decision analysis represents a systematic framework that clearly identifies real options and critical decision points. This framework links current decisions with expected future outcomes and provides advantages such as a common currency to systematically explore the liability consequences of limited budget expenditures to road deactivation and other road-related activities. Furthermore, the decision framework prevents the analysis from becoming hopelessly entangled by the vast number of possibilities generated by the alternative occurrences, magnitudes, and consequences of landslide/debris flow events and provides the information required for the first step of an adaptive management process. Here, a structured analysis of potential environmental risks for a road deactivation project in coastal British Columbia, Canada is presented. The application of decision analysis generates a ranking of the expected benefits of proposed deactivation activities on various road sections. The ranking distinguishes between road sections that offer high expected benefit from those that offer moderate to low expected benefit. Seventeen of 171, 100–m road segments accounted for 18% of the cumulative cost and 98% of the cumulative expected net benefits from road deactivation. Furthermore, the cost of deactivating a section of road is related to the expected benefit from such deactivation, thus providing the basis for more effective resource allocation and budgeting decisions. 相似文献

In a climate of limited resources, it is often necessary to prioritize restoration efforts geographically. The synoptic approach
is an ecologically based tool for geographic prioritization of wetland protection and restoration efforts. The approach was
specifically designed to incorporate best professional judgment in cases where information and resources are otherwise limited.
Synoptic assessments calculate indices for functional criteria in subunits (watersheds, counties, etc.) of a region and then
rank the subunits. Ranks can be visualized in region-scale maps which enable managers to identify areas where efforts optimize
functional performance on a regional scale. In this paper, we develop a conceptual model for prioritizing watersheds whose
wetlands can be restored to reduce total sediment yield at the watershed outlet. The conceptual model is designed to rank
watersheds but not individual wetlands within a watershed. The synoptic approach is valid for applying the sediment yield
reduction model because there is high demand for prioritizing disturbed wetlands for restoration, but there is limited, quantitative,
accurate information available with which to make decisions. Furthermore, the cost of creating a comprehensive database is
prohibitively high. Finally, because the model will be used for planning purposes, and, specifically, for prioritizing based
on multiple decisions rather than optimizing a single decision, the consequence of prioritization errors is low. Model results
cannot be treated as scientific findings. The conclusions of an assessment are based on judgement, but this judgement is guided
by scientific principles and a general understanding of relevant ecological processes. The conceptual model was developed

Agricultural Land Use Effects on Sediment Loading and Fish Assemblages in Two Minnesota (USA) Watersheds 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
We examined the relationship between water quality and fish communities within two agricultural areas using a computer simulation model. Our analyses focused on a coolwater stream, Wells Creek in southeastern Minnesota, and a warmwater stream, the Chippewa River in western Minnesota. We used the Agricultural Drainage and Pesticide Transport (ADAPT) model in relation to land use to calculate instream suspended sediment concentrations using estimates of sediment delivery, runoff, baseflow and streambank erosion, and quantified the effects of suspended sediment exposure on fish communities. We predicted the effects of agricultural practices on stream fish communities under several possible land use scenarios, with reference to current conditions. Land use changes led to reductions in sediment loading of up to 84% in Wells Creek and 49% in the Chippewa River. The reduction in sediment loading across scenarios may be directly related to a reduction in runoff by about 35% in both study areas. We found a 98% decrease in lethal concentrations of suspended sediment on fish in Wells Creek with an increase in conservation tillage, riparian buffers, and permanent vegetative cover. However, the effects of suspended sediment did not significantly decrease in the Chippewa River. This difference between study areas was likely due to differences in tolerance to suspended sediment between coolwater and warmwater fish communities and differences in topography, runoff and bank erosion between the two streams.

The hydrogeomorphic (HGM) approach to wetland classification and functional assessment is becoming more widespread in the
United States but its use has been limited by the length of time needed to develop appropriate data sets and functional assessment
models. One particularly difficult aspect is the transferability among geographic regions of specific models used to assess
wetland function. Sharing of models could considerably shorten development and implementation of HGM throughout the United
States and elsewhere. As hydrology is the driving force behind wetland functions, we assessed the comparability of hydrologic
characteristics of three HGM subclasses (slope, headwater floodplain, mainstem floodplain) using comparable long-term hydrologic
data sets from different regions of the United States (Ridge and Valley Province in Pennsylvania and the Willamette Valley
in Oregon). If hydrology by HGM subclass were similar between different geographic regions, it might be possible to more readily
transfer extant models between those regions. We found that slope wetlands (typically groundwater-driven) had similar hydrologic
characteristics, even though absolute details (such as depth of water) differed. We did not find the floodplain subclasses
to be comparable, likely due to effects of urbanization in Oregon, regional differences in soils and, perhaps, climate. Slight
differences in hydrology can shift wetland functions from those mediated by aerobic processes to those dominated by anaerobic
processes. Functions such as nutrient cycling can be noticeably altered as a result. Our data suggest considerable caution
in the application of models outside of the region for which they were developed. 相似文献

We examined the impact of single-tree selective logging and fuel reduction burns on the abundance of hollow-nesting bird species
at a regional scale in southeastern Queensland, Australia. Data were collected on species abundance and habitat structure
of dry sclerophyll production forest at 36 sites with known logging and fire histories. Sixteen bird species were recorded
with most being resident, territorial, obligate hollow nesters that used hollows that were either small (<10 cm diameter)
or very large (>18 cm diameter). Species densities were typically low, but combinations of two forest management and three
habitat structural variables influenced the abundances of eight bird species in different and sometimes conflicting ways.
The results suggest that habitat tree management for biodiversity in production forests cannot depend upon habitat structural
characteristics alone. Management histories appear to have independent influence (on some bird species) that are distinguishable
from their impacts on habitat structure per se. Rather than managing to maximize species abundances to maintain biodiversity, we may be better off managing to avoid extinctions
of populations by identifying thresholds of acceptable fluctuations in populations of not only hollow-nesting birds but other
forest dependent wildlife relative to scientifically valid forest management and habitat structural surrogates. 相似文献

The role of condensed organic matter in the nonlinear sorption of hydrophobic organic contaminants by a peat and sediments 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
This study examines the effect of soil organic matter heterogeneity on equilibrium sorption and desorption of phenanthrene, naphthalene, 1,3,5-trichlorobenzene (1,3,5-TCB), and 1,2-dichlorobenzene (1,2-DCB) by soils and sediments. Two estuary sediments, a Pahokee peat (PP; Euic, hyperthermic Lithic Haplosaprist), and two subsamples (base- and acid-treated peat [TP] and acid-treated peat [FP]) of the peat were used as the sorbents. The contents of black carbon particles were quantified with a chemical extraction method. Petrographical examinations revealed the presence of the condensed soil and sediment organic matter (SOM) in Pahokee peat. The Freundlich isotherm model in two different forms was used to fit both sorption and desorption data. The results show that the sorption and desorption isotherms are generally nonlinear and that the apparent sorption-desorption hysteresis is present for phenanthrene and TCB. Detailed analysis of sorption data for the tested sorbent-sorbate systems indicates that black carbon is probably responsible for sorption isotherm nonlinearity for the two sediments, whereas the humic substances and kerogen may play the dominant role in nonlinear sorption by the peat. This investigation suggests that the microporosity of SOM is important for the hydrophobic organic contaminant (HOC) sorption capacity on the peat. 相似文献

Soil and litter phosphorus-31 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy: extractants, metals, and phosphorus relaxation times 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Phosphorus-31 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is an excellent tool with which to study soil organic P, allowing quantitative, comparative analysis of P forms. However, for 31P NMR to be tative, all peaks must be completely visible, and in their correct relative proportions. There must be no line broadening, and adequate delay times must be used to avoid saturation of peaks. The objective of this study was to examine the effects of extractants on delay times and peak saturation. Two samples (a forest litter and a mineral soil sample) and three extractants (0.25 M NaOH, NaOH plus Chelex (Bio-Rad Laboratories, Hercules, CA), and NaOH plus EDTA) were used to determine the differences in the concentration of P and cations solubilized by each extractant, and to measure spin-lattice (T1) relaxation times of P peaks in each extract. For both soil and litter, NaOH-Chelex extracted the lowest concentrations of P. For the litter sample, T1 values were short for all extractants due to the high Fe concentration remaining after extraction. For the soil sample, there were noticeable differences among the extractants. The NaOH-Chelex sample had less Fe and Mn remaining in solution after extraction than the other extractants, and the longest delay times used in the study, 6.4 s, were not long enough for quantitative analysis. Delay times of 1.5 to 2 s for the NaOH and NaOH-EDTA were adequate. Line broadening was highest in the NaOH extracts, which had the highest concentration of Fe. On the basis of these results, recommendations for future analyses of soil and litter samples by solution 31P NMR spectroscopy include: careful selection of an extractant; measurement of paramagnetic ions extracted with P; use of appropriate delay times and the minimum number of scans; and measurement of T1 values whenever possible. 相似文献
