Over the course of the last decade, research conducted by the Imperial College Environmental Geochemistry Research Group has focused on the nature and effects of lead in UK dusts and soils. An initial nationwide reconnaissance survey demonstrated that approximately 10% of the population is exposed to lead levels in excess of 2,000 g g–1 in house-hold dust. Subsequent exposure studies revealed that for 2 year old children in the UK urban environment, approximately 50% of lead intake was from dust ingested as a result of hand-to-mouth activity. Follow-up computer controlled scanning electron microscopy (CCSEM) analysis of urban household dust and particulate material wiped from children's hands showed that important sources of dust lead include lead-based paint, road dust and soils. CCSEM identification of specific soil lead tracer particles (from minewaste contaminated soils) in dusts and on children's hands further documented the important role of soil as a source of exposure. Speciation studies of soil lead of this origin indicated that the form of the lead, which is largely influenced by the soil environment, is the primary control on bioavailability. It appears that although lead of minewaste origin may be present at elevated levels in dusts and soils, it does not necessarily contribute to elevated blood lead levels when the lead is present in relatively insoluble form.  相似文献

Solutions and verification of a scale-dependent dispersion model   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7  
In this paper, analytical solutions are derived for a one-dimensional scale-dependent dispersion model (SDM), considering linear equilibrium sorption and first-order degradation for continuous and pulse contaminant sources, with a constant input concentration in a semi-infinite uniform porous medium. In the SDM model, dispersivity alpha(x) is replaced with a constant epsilon multiplied by the transport distance x. The solution for a pulse source is verified experimentally in the analysis of tritium data obtained from an 8-m-long homogenous pea-gravel column with multiple sampling locations, and the results are compared with those analysed by a commonly used solution of a constant dispersion model (CDM). The SDM predicts concentrations satisfactorily at all sampling locations, while the CDM fits the experimental data well for only one location. Both models are then calibrated for each individual concentration breakthrough curve, using local values for either epsilon in the SDM or alpha(x) in the CDM. Both models give equally good fits for appropriate choices of individual epsilon and alpha(x) values, and both indicate a linear increase in alpha(x) with distance. The epsilon values tend to change little as x increases and are expected to approach a constant at relatively large distances downstream. Hence, predictions from the SDM should become more accurate as x increases.  相似文献

The only remaining wild population of the endangered Whooping Crane ( Grus americana ) winters in salt marsh habitats of the Texas (U.S.) coast. Whooping Cranes are known to respond and utilize nearby upland habitats after a tire treatment has been applied. We investigated several factors that may attract Whooping Cranes to recently burned sites at Aransas National Wildlife Refuge between 1982 and 1994 and whether cranes utilize upland habitats primarily in response to a recent fire treatment or whether they occur regularly on uplands regardless of burning. We evaluated the effect of different years, burn site location, date of burn, and acorn production on crane use of specific burn sites. Crane use was determined with ground surveys from 1982 through 1985 and from weekly aerial surveys between 1986 and 1994. Whooping Cranes used fire-treated upland habitats to a significantly greater extent than unburned sites. The response of cranes to recently burned sites was greatest immediately after fire treatment and declined with time. No significant difference was found in crane use of burned sites among different years. Similarly, time of burn and acorn production had no significant effect on crane use of fire-treated habitats. Crane use among specific burn units differed significantly. We suggest that Whooping Cranes may be using fire-treated upland habitats to feed on recently killed vertebrates and invertebrates plus recently exposed plant items. Because cranes primarily inhabit salt marsh habitats, the availability of alternate food sources may be of considerable importance, particularly during years when marsh foods are scarce. But because it appears that areas must be burned to facilitate use by Whooping Cranes, we suggest that the extent of prescribed burning be based on reduced availability of marsh food resources and not on acorn production estimates alone.  相似文献

The southeastern Bering Sea is characterized by three mixing regimes, separated by fronts associated with the 50, 100, and 200 m isobaths. Phytoplankton to zooplankton transfer-rates are high in waters over the outer shelf and slope (seaward of the 100 m front) relative to transfer in waters over the middle shelf (between the 50 and 100 m fronts). To see whether this difference is reflected at a higher trophic level, we computed carbon flux to the 11 commonest seabird species. Bird-density data (for the period 1975 through 1979) were combined with daily caloric requirement, which is an allometric function of body size in this endothermic group. Minimum transfer to seabirds over a 153 d period (April–August) was 30 mg C m-2 for the middle shelf and 48 mg C m-2 for outer shelf and slope waters. Trophic transfer to subsurface-feeding birds (shearwaters, murres and auklets) differed little between regions. In contrast, trophic transfer to surface-feeding birds (fulmars, petrels, and kittiwakes) in the outer shelf and slope waters was 3 times greater than in the waters of the middle shelf. Thus, for seabirds as a whole, pathways of energy transfer differed more between regions than did total carbon flux.  相似文献

Patterns of activity and metabolism were investigated in larval Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua L.) between December 1991 and July 1992: (1) throughout larval development; (2) between two genetically discrete populations (Scotian Shelf and Newfoundland) and (3) as a function of two different culture temperatures. During the yolk-sac stage (0 to 5 d post-hatch), changes in swimming speed were not related to mass-specific metabolic rates; no portion of the mass-specific oxygen consumption could be explained by changes in activity. In the mixed feeding stage (6 to 14 d posthatch), there was a tendency for oxygen consumption to be related to changes in swimming speed. In the exogenous feeding stage (>14 d post-hatch), oxygen consumption significantly increased with swimming speed. These ontogenetic patterns of activity and metabolism were the same for larvae from the Scotian Shelf and Newfoundland populations. However, over the entire larval life and among ontogenetic stages, the metabolic cost of activity (mass-specific O2 consumption/swimming speed) of Scotian Shelf larvae was significantly higher than that of Newfoundland larvae. When cod larvae, that had developed at 5°C, were acutely exposed to 10°C, Scotian Shelf larvae had a higher intrinsic cost of activity than Newfoundland larvae, over the entire larval life. During the exogenous feeding stage, the mean metabolic cost of activity for Newfoundland larvae raised at 10°C and tested at 10°C was significantly higher and more variable than that of larvae raised at lower temperatures. However, the metabolic cost of activity of larvae raised and tested at 10°C was not significantly different between source populations. Together these findings suggest that differences in swimming energetics reflect changing energy requirements for activity among ontogenetic stages, and reflect adaptation to regional environments among genetically discrete populations.  相似文献

Recent theoretical arguments have claimed that negative relationships between the size and symmetry of secondary sexual traits are indicative of honest signalling of male quality. The patterns of fluctuating asymmetry in beetle horns have been proposed to support the honest signalling hypothesis. Here we examine three assumptions of the hypothesis, (1) that traits are costly to produce; (2) the levels of fluctuating asymmetry are indicative of stress imposed during development; and (3) that males with larger traits should have more symmetrical traits, using the horned beetle, Onthophagus taurus. Experimental manipulations of brood mass were used to manipulate horn size and asymmetry. The development of horns was found to be environmentally determined and costly in terms of delayed development and increased risk of pre-adult mortality. Decreasing resource availability increased relative horn asymmetry. However, horn height was positively related to absolute horn asymmetry. While the results do support the hypothesis that sexual selection on secondary sexual traits should increase levels of fluctuating asymmetry, they provide no support for the notion that the patterns of asymmetry honestly signal male quality. Horns are used in disputes between males and may be indicative of male parental investment. Thus, we conclude that while horn size may be an indication of male quality, the patterns of fluctuating asymmetry are not. Received: 16 December 1996 / Accepted after revision: 5 May 1997  相似文献

Although nutrient-rich manure biochars are expected to be an effective heavy metal stabilizer in agricultural and contaminated soils, systematic studies are lacking to predict the influence of manure variety and pyrolysis temperature on metal-binding potentials. In this study, biochars produced from five manure varieties (dairy, paved feedlot, swine solids, poultry litter, and turkey litter) at two pyrolytic temperatures (350 and 700°C) were examined for the stabilization of Pb, Cu, Ni, and Cd in a weathered, acidic Norfolk loamy sand (fine-loamy, kaolinitic, thermic, Typic Kandiudult). Equilibrium concentrations in the aqueous phase were determined for heavy metals (Cu, Ni, Cd, and Pb) and additional selected elements (Na, P, S, Ca, Mg, Al, and K); these were analyzed by positive matrix factorization to quantitatively determine the factors responsible for the biochar's ability to bind the selected heavy metals in soil. Concurrently with the greatest increase in pH and highest equilibrium Na, S, and K concentrations, poultry litter, turkey litter, and feedlot 700°C biochar exhibited the greatest heavy metal retention. In contrast, manure varieties containing disproportionately high (swine) and low (dairy) ash, P, and other elements were the least effective stabilizers. Regardless of the manure type, proton nuclear magnetic resonance analyses showed the removal of leachable aliphatic and nitrogen-containing heteroaromatic functional groups at the higher (700°C) pyrolysis temperature. Consistently greater Cu retention by the 700°C biochar indicated the mobilization of Cu by 350°C biochar-born dissolved organic carbon; however, the influence of other temperature-dependent biochar characteristics cannot be ruled out.  相似文献

Rainwater harvesting (RWH) has traditionally been implemented in areas with (semi) arid climates or limited access to potable water supplies; however, recent droughts in the humid southeastern United States have led to increased implementation of RWH systems. The objectives of this study were twofold: (1) present usage characteristics and performance results for four RWH systems installed in humid North Carolina (NC) as compared with systems located in arid/semiarid regions and (2) identify system benefits and modifications that could help improve the performance of RWH systems installed in humid regions of the world. For this study four RWH systems were installed in NC. Their usage was monitored for at least one year and compared with similar studies. Results revealed that dedicated water uses and usage characteristics for RWH systems in NC differed from those previously reported in the literature. Two of the systems studied met 100 and 61% of the potable water demand with designated uses of animal kennel flushing and greenhouse irrigation, respectively. The designated uses yielding the greatest potable water replacement were often seasonal or periodic, thus necessitating the need for identifying and implementing secondary objectives for these systems, namely, stormwater management. Otherwise, the expense and effort required to implement RWH systems in humid areas will most likely preclude their use.  相似文献
