Monoterpenes are structurally diverse natural compounds that play an essential role in the chemical ecology of a wide array
of organisms. A key enzyme in monoterpene biosynthesis is geranyl diphosphate synthase (GPPS). GPPS is an isoprenyl diphosphate
synthase that catalyzes a single electrophilic condensation reaction between dimethylallyl diphosphate (C5) and isopentenyl diphosphate (C5) to produce geranyl diphosphate (GDP; C10). GDP is the universal precursor to all monoterpenes. Subsequently, monoterpene synthases are responsible for the transformation
of GDP to a variety of acyclic, monocyclic, and bicyclic monoterpene products. In pheromone-producing male Ips pini bark beetles (Coleoptera: Scolytidae), the acyclic monoterpene myrcene is required for the production of the major aggregation
pheromone component, ipsdienol. Here, we report monoterpene synthase activity associated with GPPS of I. pini. Enzyme assays were performed on recombinant GPPS to determine the presence of monoterpene synthase activity, and the reaction
products were analyzed by coupled gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. The functionally expressed recombinant enzyme produced
both GDP and myrcene, making GPPS of I. pini a bifunctional enzyme. This unique insect isoprenyl diphosphate synthase possesses the functional plasticity that is characteristic
of terpene biosynthetic enzymes of plants, contributing toward the current understanding of product specificity of the isoprenoid

During the last 50 years, mechanisation of the rural environment, and, more recently, the Common Agricultural Policy have led to profound changes in agrarian landscapes throughout Europe, and in particular in the rich and diverse Mediterranean landscapes (Meeus et al., 1990). In the north-east of the Iberian Peninsula, a small area of hedgerow landscape persists as a remnant of what was once an important centre for livestock production. This paper presents the results of a study carried out in this area with the aim of clarifying the relationship between the structural change of this hedgerow landscape and the evolution of farming practices developed by its owners and workers. It also considers these farmers’ perceptions of their pastures, of their farms and of the region. Up to 61 statistically significant relationships were found between the physical landscape characteristic variables and the socio-economical variables. Results depict a hedgerow landscape determined by the combination of two management models. Here, and contrary to conclusions reported in similar literature, traditional pasture activity leads to a weaker hedgerow network than a farming model based on crop cultivation. Management guidance required to move from the current situation towards a hedgerow landscape supporting both biodiversity and agrarian activity is discussed. 相似文献

The adsorption of copper(II) ions from aqueous solutions by the green horse-chestnut shell was studied in a batch adsorption system. It was determined how the parameters of the adsorption process, such as time, pH, copper(II) ions concentration and sorbent dose, influence the effectiveness of copper(II) ions’ removal. The adsorption process was fast and equilibrium was established about 10?min, and near 95–97% of Cu(II) ions were removed from aqueous solution. Maximum copper(II) ions’ adsorption occurred at around pH 5. The adsorption kinetics are also described, using pseudo-first-order model and pseudo-second-order model of type 1 and 2. A comparison of the kinetics models on the overall adsorption rate showed that the adsorption system was best described by the pseudo-second-order model of type 1 (r2?=?0.999) for all initial concentrations. Another key part of this study was the use of the Freundlich model to determine the adsorption isotherm and the experimental data were in strong correspondence with this model. 相似文献

Application of public health insecticides for mosquito control has increased dramatically with the recent outbreaks in the continental United States of dengue, chikungunya, and Zika. Mosquito control is often controversial because of the potential impacts on health and the environment due to the chemicals used. The emphasis in this review is to examine the transport, fate, and potential effects of the active ingredients in selected public health insecticides used for mosquito control. Due to the many potential entry points for insecticides, especially in urban areas where use is less monitored and application may be in greater amounts per unit area, this review suggests that a potential focus might be on the prevalence and quantification of the cumulative concentrations of these insecticides in natural systems. Often concentrations resulting from a single application are unlikely to cause mortality, but multiple applications may result in concentrations of environmental concern. Minimizing entrance to waterways and public water supply sources can be achieved by applying insecticides during prime meteorological conditions where drift and volatilization are minimized, using vegetated buffer zones in agricultural areas to prevent runoff, and avoiding application to impervious surfaces in urban areas. 相似文献

Wet deposition scavenges particles and particle-associated bacteria from the air column, but the impact of raindrops on various surfaces on Earth causes emission of surface-associated bacteria into the air column. Thus, after rainfall, these two mechanisms are expected to cause changes in airborne bacterial community composition (BCC). In this study, aerosol samples were collected at a suburban site in Seoul, Korea before and after three heavy rainfall events in April, May, and July 2011. BCC was investigated by pyrosequencing the 16S rRNA gene in aerosol samples. Interestingly, the relative abundance of non-spore forming Actinobacteria operational taxonomic units (OTUs) was always higher in post-rain aerosol samples. In particular, the absolute and relative abundances of airborne Propionibacteriaceae always increased after rainfall, whereas those of airborne Firmicutes, including Carnobacteriaceae and Clostridiales, consistently decreased. Marine bacterial sequences, which were temporally important in aerosol samples, also decreased after rainfall events. Further, increases in pathogen-like sequences were often observed in post-rain air samples. Rainfall events seemed to affect airborne BCCs by the combined action of the two mechanisms, with potentially adverse effects on human and plant health.

Host sea anemones are ecologically important as they provide habitat for obligate symbiotic anemonefish in many areas of the
Indo-Pacific. Despite their importance, no information is available on their gametogenic cycles. This study aimed to address
this lack of knowledge by determining the gametogenic cycles of Entacmaea quadricolor. Gonad samples were taken from January 2003 to February 2005 at North Solitary Island, Solitary Islands Marine Park, Australia
using a specially developed non-lethal field biopsy sampling technique. Sampling was done 17 times during the study period,
with 15–20 individuals being sampled on each occasion. Samples were examined prior to fixation, and then histologically sectioned
to determine the reproductive activity of each individual. Female anemones were significantly more abundant than males, and
had asynchronous oocyte development both within and among individuals. Male anemones showed a single annual cycle of spermary
growth, development and spawning. Data from the 26-month study indicated that spawning occurred in the austral summer and
autumn between January and April, which coincided with the observed spawning periods that have previously been documented
for this species in outdoor flow-through seawater tanks at the study location. The biopsy sampling technique used during this
study provides an opportunity to gain a more thorough understanding of the gametogenic cycles and sexual pattern of host sea

Source-sink dynamics have been suggested to characterize the population structure of many species, but the prevalence of source-sink systems in nature is uncertain because of inherent challenges in estimating migration rates among populations. Migration rates are often difficult to estimate directly with demographic methods, and indirect genetic methods are subject to a variety of assumptions that are difficult to meet or to apply to evolutionary timescales. Furthermore, such methods cannot be rigorously applied to high-gene-flow species. Here, we employ genetic parentage assignments in conjunction with demographic simulations to infer the level of immigration into a putative sink population. We use individual-based demographic models to estimate expected distributions of parent-offspring dyads under competing sink and closed-population models. By comparing the actual number of parent-offspring dyads (identified from multilocus genetic profiles) in a random sample of individuals taken from a population to expectations under these two contrasting demographic models, it is possible to estimate the rate of immigration and test hypotheses related to the role of immigration on population processes on an ecological timescale. The difference in the expected number of parent-offspring dyads between the two population models was greatest when immigration into the sink population was high, indicating that unlike traditional population genetic inference models, the highest degree of statistical power is achieved for the approach presented here when migration rates are high. We used the proposed genetic parentage approach to demonstrate that a threatened population of Marbled Murrelets (Braclhyrarmphus marmotus) appears to be supplemented by a low level of immigration (approximately 2-6% annually) from other populations. 相似文献

This study analyses distribution and abundance patterns of mesozooplankton communities at 13 stations in the coastal waters over a marine outfall area in the northeastern South China Sea. Cruises were conducted in March, June and September 2002, and plankton samples were collected with a 333 microm North Pacific net. The Mesozooplankton was dominated by calanoid Copepods, Cladocera, Chaetognatha and Pteropoda. Stations located near the entrance of the harbor provided a relatively higher abundance of Noctilucales and Radiolarians. In total, 20 zooplankton groups were identified in which, Calanoida, Cladocera, Chaetognatha, Pteropoda, Poecilostomatoida and Appendicularia comprised 92.77% of the total zooplankton abundance. Copepoda dominated in all three cruises, comprising 65.32% of the total mesozooplankton abundance. Samples collected in June recorded higher mesozooplankton abundance than March and September samples. Onshore stations recorded higher BOD values, higher abundance of Noctilucales and Radiolarians and a relativelylower abundance of the overall mesozooplankton. Total mesozooplankton abundance did not correlate significantly with temperature, pH, or dissolved oxygen, but correlated negatively with BOD. 相似文献

Summary. There is an increased interest for the use of GM trees in forestry and several commercially promising lines are now available.
However, the ecological implications of the use of GM trees, e.g. effects on non-target natural enemies, have rarely been
explored. The aim of this study was to determine if modification of non-defensive traits in GM poplars unintentionally can
influence plant chemistry in a way that has consequences for palatability to voles. In a greenhouse experiment, we used two
lines, SPS33A and SPS26, of GM hybrid poplars (Populus tremula x tremuloides) with 1.5 and 4 times, respectively, over-expression sucrose-phosphate synthase (SPS). This enzyme plays a central role in
sucrose synthesis, affecting cold acclimation, mesophyll sucrose content and biomass production. As a control we used the
isogenic unmodified wild type. Stems of these poplars were presented to bank voles and field voles in cafeteria experiments.
The concentration of condensed tannins was higher in leaves of lines SPS33A and SPS26 than in the isogenic wild-type and the
concentration of nitrogen was higher in line SPS33A than in both the wild-type and line SPS26. Although the bank voles consumed
slightly less bark from SPS33A, there were no significant differences in the preference of bank vole or field vole for the
different poplar lines. This indicates that the changes in plant chemistry were insufficient to produce any strong herbivore
response or that alteration in tannins and nitrogen counteracted each other. Still, changes in the interactions between mammalian
herbivores and GM trees are important to consider in future cost-benefits analyses of GM trees. 相似文献

In this study, tebuconazole (TEB)-loaded poly-3-hydroxybutyrate (P3HB)-based microparticles were developed and comprehensively characterized. TEB-loaded microparticles with the initial loading amounts of the fungicide of 10, 25, and 50% of the polymer mass (TEB 10, TEB 25, and TEB 50%) were prepared using emulsion technique. Encapsulation efficiency of TEB varied from 59 to 86%. As the loading amount was increased, the average diameter of microparticles increased too, from 41.3 to 71.7?µm, while zeta potential was not influenced by TEB loading, varying between –32.6 and –35.7?mV. TEB was gradually released from the microparticles to the model medium, and after 60?d, from 25 to 43% of TEB was released depending on the content of the encapsulated fungicide. The data obtained from in vitro TEB release were fitted to different mathematical models. It was shown that the release profiles of TEB could be best explained by the Zero-order, Higuchi, and Hixson–Crowell models. The antifungal activity of the P3HB/TEB microparticles against phytopathogenic fungi Fusarium moniliforme and Fusarium solani was demonstrated by in vitro tests conducted in Petri dishes. Thus, hydrophobic agrochemicals (TEB) can be effectively encapsulated into P3HB microparticles to construct slow-release formulations. 相似文献
