∑DDT and PCB levels were analysed in samples of arctic terns and herring gulls collected in the archipelago of southwestern Finland. Special attention was paid to the levels at various stages of the life cycle and in different sexes. The levels were nearly ten times higher in the herring gull. The highest loads were found in adult birds and in newly hatched chicks but the levels were much lower (only 7–12 % in the herring gull) in chicks just before fledgling. The levels in young gulls remained low until the end of August at least. Therefore it is plausible that the high levels found in adult gulls are a consequence of their wintering in the southern Baltic.The levels of ∑DDT and PCB residues were significantly lower in female arctic terns than in male terns. Differences between the sexes were small in the herring gull. Thus it is possible that the female of the arctic tern is able to release pollutants, especially PCB residues, more effectively into eggs than the female of the herring gull. The biochemical mechanisms involved are not clear but a possible explanation may be different lipoprotein structures in the eggs of the species. 相似文献

Microorganisms isolated from soil degrade phenylurea herbicides via two major pathways: (i) direct hydrolysis by an amidase leading to N,O-dimethylhydroxylamine, CO2 and aniline1 and (ii) N-dealkylation, which has been described as the first step in urea herbicide degradation by a variety of organisms including mammals, plants and microbial systems (for a review see reference 2).Until now no attempts have been made to investigate the mechanism of N-demethylation of substituted ureas in soil microorganisms, due to the instability of the N-hydroxymethyl intermediates. Two methods for the determination of total organic halogen (TOX), orginating from bleaching of pulp, in receiving waters have been compared. One of the methods (AC/MC) is based on adsorption of the halogenated matter onto an activated carbon sorbent. The halogen is determined by a microcoulometric technique after combustion of the carbon. The other method (XAD/PT) uses an XAD resin as sorbent and the determination of the halogen is carried out by potentiometric titration after a schöniger combustion of the resin eluate.Both methods showed good performance for samples consisting of spent bleach liquors diluted with distilled, fresh and brackish water. The repeatability was very good with a relative standard deviation less than a few per cent. The detection limit of the AC/MC method is about 0.1 μmol/1 and for the XAD/PT method about ten times higher. The AC/MC method gave in most cases 10–20% higher TOX concentrations compared to the XAD/PT method. 相似文献

Importance of wax esters and other lipids in the marine food chain: Phytoplankton and copepods 总被引:9,自引:0,他引:9
Wax esters, which function as reserve fuels, account for 25 to 40% of the lipid of the pelagic copepod Calanus helgolandicus (Copepoda, Calanoida). In laboratory experiments with these crustaceans, diatoms (Lauderia borealis, Chaetoceros curvisetus, and Skeletonema costatum) and dinoflagellates (Gymnodinium splendens), which contained no wax esters, were used as food. Changes in the food concentration affected both the amount of lipid and the composition of the wax esters. Since the fatty acids of the triglycerides and wax esters of C. helgolandicus resembled the dietary fatty acid composition, it appeared that copepods incorporated their dietary fatty acids largely unchanged into their wax esters. The polyunsaturated alcohols of the wax esters did not correspond in carbon numbers or degrees of unsaturation to the dietary fatty acids. We postulate two different metabolic pools to explain the origin of these long chain alcohols. The phospholipid fatty acids were not affected by changes in the amount or type of food, probably because of their structural function. 相似文献

Taking the European Union (EU) as a case study, we simulate the application of non-uniform national mitigation targets to achieve a sectoral reduction in agricultural non-carbon dioxide (CO2) greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Scenario results show substantial impacts on EU agricultural production, in particular, the livestock sector. Significant increases in imports and decreases in exports result in rather moderate domestic consumption impacts but induce production increases in non-EU countries that are associated with considerable emission leakage effects. The results underline four major challenges for the general integration of agriculture into national and global climate change mitigation policy frameworks and strategies, as they strengthen requests for (1) a targeted but flexible implementation of mitigation obligations at national and global level and (2) the need for a wider consideration of technological mitigation options. The results also indicate that a globally effective reduction in agricultural emissions requires (3) multilateral commitments for agriculture to limit emission leakage and may have to (4) consider options that tackle the reduction in GHG emissions from the consumption side. 相似文献
