Years of political instability have left Lebanon with significant gaps in environmental knowledge. This paper reports new results for trace metals in bed sediments of the river Nahr-lbrahim. The drainage basin of the river Nahr-lbrahim is largely floored by karstified limestone. Metal pollution is operative within the catchment. The objectives of this study were first to identify possible sources of metals (geological and/or anthropogenic) and then to characterise the chemical partitioning of the metals in the sediments. Bed load sediments were sampled at five locations along a 13km stretch from the river mouth, during the dry season. Samples were collected on two dates, dried and then sieved into three mechanical fractions. We report total Fe, Cu, Pb and Zn contents of the <75m sediment fraction for the dry season and interpret the results in terms of geology and point and non-point discharges to the river. Total metal contents were derived from summing the concentrations of metals in the chemical fractions of the sediments. A sequential chemical extraction procedure was applied to the <75m fraction and the data showed that, except for Fe, the carbonate fraction had the largest role in metal sediment deposition. 相似文献

Securing adequate safe drinking water and proper sanitation is a major challenge facing the developing world. The “Water for
Life Decade” emphasizes the importance of upgrading national water quality and sanitation services. This study assessed the
domestic water profile in the city of Beirut. Samples were collected from three types of household water sources (municipality,
private wells, and vended water bottles) and assessed for their physiochemical and microbiological profile. At the same time,
a cross-sectional survey assessing water consumption patterns and the prevalence of water-borne diseases was conducted. The
results showed a deficient water quality profile in all three water sources. The measured physiochemical and bacteriological
parameters reflected the high frequency of water-borne diseases. Action to secure a safe domestic water supply is essential.
The plan should guarantee the protection of water sources, ensure sufficient treatment of domestic water and upgrade the national
program for potable water quality control. Periodic quality monitoring and legislating the chaotic water-vending sector are
indispensable. Additionally, the deterioration of private well sources by sea and wastewater infiltration necessitates the
enforcement of legislation associated with the use and management of private wells. Consumer awareness and active contributions

The aim of present study was to develop and evaluate sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) self-microemulsifying systems (SMES) for the removal of an anionic dye xylenol orange (XO) from its bulk aqueous media via liquid–liquid adsorption. The composition of SDS SMES was optimized by Box–Behnken statistical design for the maximum removal of XO from its aqueous solution. Various SDS formulations were prepared by spontaneous emulsification method and characterized for thermodynamic stability, self-microemulsification efficiency, droplet size, and viscosity. Adsorption studies were conducted at 8, 16, and 24 h by mixing small amounts of SDS formulations with relatively large amounts of bulk aqueous solution of XO. Droplet size and viscosity of SDS formulations were significantly influenced by oil phase concentration (triacetin), while surfactant concentration had little impact on droplet size and viscosity. However, the percentage of removal of XO was influenced by triacetin concentration, surfactant concentration, and adsorption time. Based on lowest droplet size (35.97 nm), lowest viscosity (29.62 cp), and highest percentage of removal efficiency (89.77 %), formulation F14, containing 2 % w/w of triacetin and 40 % w/w of surfactant mixture (20 % w/w of SDS and 20 % w/w of polyethylene glycol 400), was selected as an optimized formulation for the removal of XO from its bulk aqueous media after 16 h. These results indicated that SDS SMES could be suitable alternates of solid–liquid adsorption for the removal of toxic dyes such as XO from its aqueous solution through liquid–liquid adsorption. 相似文献

In order to explore soil profile CO2 transport and production, values of vertical soil profile CO2 concentration, moisture and temperature were measured continuously during whole cotton growing season in oasis cotton field of Aksu National Experimental Station of Oasis Farmland Ecosystem, central Asia. Simultaneously, soil CO2 efflux was measured by chamber system to assess the deducing result by Fick’s first law. In our experiment, soil CO2 effluxes were determined by two related intimately methods. Soil CO2 releasing at 0–20 cm depth was calculated by gas transport equation and was found to be closely related to soil CO2 efflux. However, mean values of soil CO2 production at 0–20 cm depth were less than those of soil CO2 efflux during the whole cotton growing season. This study aims to analyse the heavy metal pollutants in Jeddah, the second largest city in the Gulf Cooperation Council with a population exceeding 3.5 million, and many vehicles. Ninety-eight street dust samples were collected seasonally from the six major roads as well as the Jeddah Beach, and subsequently digested using modified Leeds Public Analyst method. The heavy metals (Fe, Zn, Mn, Cu, Cd, and Pb) were extracted from the ash using methyl isobutyl ketone as solvent extraction and eventually analysed by atomic absorption spectroscopy. Multivariate statistical techniques, principal component analysis (PCA), and hierarchical cluster analysis were applied to these data. Heavy metal concentrations were ranked according to the following descending order: Fe > Zn > Mn > Cu > Pb > Cd. In order to study the pollution and health risk from these heavy metals as well as estimating their effect on the environment, pollution indices, integrated pollution index, enrichment factor, daily dose average, hazard quotient, and hazard index were all analysed. The PCA showed high levels of Zn, Fe, and Cd in Al Kurnish road, while these elements were consistently detected on King Abdulaziz and Al Madina roads. The study indicates that high levels of Zn and Pb pollution were recorded for major roads in Jeddah. Six out of seven roads had high pollution indices. This study is the first step towards further investigations into current health problems in Jeddah, such as anaemia and asthma. 相似文献
