Extrusion with an intermeshing corotating twin-screw extruder with a limited amount of water caused structural changes in corn starch. The structural changes resulted in a transformation-from a semicrystalline to an amorphous state and the development of orientation of molecular chains in the amorphous region during extrusion. These structural changes, in turn, caused an increase in theT g, tensile strength, and resilience of the extruded corn starch. Our experimental results showed that the tensile properties and resilience of the expanded corn starch extruded at 240‡C were the best: tensile strength, 1.7 kPa; tensile modulus, 40.4 kPa; and resilience, 57.2%. Extrusion produced an expanded corn starch suitable for protective loose-fill.  相似文献

Seeds of red pepper and tomato were sowed and cultivated in a soil blended with powdery poly(l-lactide) (PLLA), and poly(butylene succinate) (PBS). PBS depressed the growth of the two plants significantly even at a concentration as low as 5%, whereas PLLA up to 35% affected negligibly or even boosted the growth of the two plants. pH and number of microbial cells in the soil after 80 days of cultivation were almost the same independently whether the soil was blended with the two polymers or not. In contrast, the molecular weight of PBS decreased much faster than that of PLLA. Because succinic acid and 1,4-butane diol, from which PBS was synthesized, exhibited toxicity to both plant and animal cells to retard the germination rate of young radish seeds and to deform the morphology of HeLa cells significantly [1], the monomers and the oligomers produced from the PBS degradation should have a detrimental influence on the growth of the two plants.  相似文献

This research studied the characteristics of dried sewage sludge using TGA to co-fire dried sewage sludge with coal in power plants. The sewage sludges that were discharged from Daejeon, Korea were dried and examined fundamental properties to use them as a fuel. Also, the properties of bituminous coal and wood pellet, which are used in domestic coal power plants, were analyzed and compared with them of sewage sludges and non-isothermal analyses of dried sewage sludges were performed at the heating rates of 5, 10, 20, and 30C /min using TG analyzer to investigate the basic combustion characteristics. As a results of these TGA/DTG analyses, sewage sludges showed its primary peak at the temperature of 250–500?°C, which overlapped with main peak of wood and secondary peak at around 500–600?°C, which overlapped with main peak of coals. Also for the interpretation by Friedman method, the activation energies in the section of highest weight loss were 525.16 kJ/mole for dried digested sewage sludge, 544.88 kJ/mole for dried excess sewage sludge, 203.86 kJ/mole for wood pellet and 146.4585 kJ/mole for bituminous coal. The reaction orders for dried digested excess sewage sludge, dried excess sewage sludge, wood pellet and bituminous coal were 28.775, 24.319, 18.398 and 9.1005, respectively, and the frequency factors were 5.89?\(\times \hspace{0.17em}\)1028, 1.65?\(\times \hspace{0.17em}\)1024,, 9.59?\(\times \hspace{0.17em}\)1016 and 1.77?\(\times \hspace{0.17em}\)108 for each, respectively.  相似文献

CREAMS-PADDY, a modified version of the field-scale CREAMS model, simulates the hydrologic, sediment, and nutrient cycles in paddy fields. The CREAMS-PADDY model was applied to estimate the effects of using wastewater for irrigation on nutrient loads from paddy fields in Republic of Korea. The model was calibrated and validated using data from two rice paddy fields. The coefficient of determination between observed and simulated total nitrogen and total phosphorus were 0.92 and 0.57, respectively, for the calibration period and 0.84 and 0.73 for the validation period. Simulations showed that when using wastewater for irrigation, the total nitrogen loads increased by 210% and total phosphorus by 1,270% when compared with conventional water irrigation. The total nitrogen and total phosphorus concentration in the ponded water increased by 254 and 534%, respectively, when compared with conventional water irrigation. The effect of reducing N and P fertilizer application rates by 10, 30, and 50% on nutrient loads exiting a paddy field were also simulated using the validated CREAMS-PADDY model. These simulations indicated that total phosphorus loads from the paddy were reduced only slightly by reducing the fertilizer, while total nitrogen loads were reduced by as much as 8.8, 16.6, and 24.4% when N ferlitizer rates were reduced by 10, 30, and 50%, respectively. Considering its richness in organic and inorganic mineral nutrients, the recycling of sewage sludge (SS) is highly considered as a soil supplement in agriculture. However, the fate of hazardous heavy metal accumulation in the crops cultivated in SS amended soils is always a source of concern. Since nanoparticles are widely recognized to reduce heavy metal uptake by crop plants; thus, the present experiment deals with okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L. Moench) cultivation under the combined application of SS and TiO2-nanoparticles (NPs). Triplicated pot experiments were conducted using different doses of SS and TiO2-NPs such as 0 g/kg SS (control), 50 g/kg SS, 50 g/kg SS?+?TiO2, 100 g/kg SS, and 100 g/kg SS?+?TiO2, respectively. The findings of this study indicated that among the doses of treatment combinations investigated, 100 g/kg SS?+?TiO2 showed a significant (p?<?0.05) increase in the okra plant yield (287.87?±?4.06 g/plant) and other biochemical parameters such as fruit length (13.97?±?0.54 cm), plant height (75.05?±?3.18 cm), superoxide dismutase (SOD: 110.68?±?3.11 μ/mg), catalase (CAT: 81.32?±?3.52 μ/mg), and chlorophyll content (3.12?±?0.05 mg/g fwt.). Also, the maximum contents of six heavy metals in the soil and cultivated okra plant tissues (fruit, stem, and root regions) followed the order of Fe?>?Mn?>?Cu?>?Zn?>?Cr?>?Cd using the same treatment. Bioaccumulation and health risk assessment indicated that foliar application of TiO2-NPs significantly reduced the fate of heavy metal accumulation under higher doses of SS application. Therefore, the findings of this study suggested that the combined use of SS and TiO2-NPs may be useful in ameliorating the negative consequences of heavy metal accumulation in cultivated okra crops.

Rapid industrial developments coupled with surging population growth have complicated issues dealing with water scarcity as the quest for clean and sanitized water intensifies globally. Existing flesh water supplies could be contaminated with organic, inorganic and biological matters that have potential harm to the society. Turbidity in general is a measure of water cloudiness induced by such colloidal and suspended matters and is also one of the major criteria in raw water monitoring to meet the stipulated water quality guidelines. Turbidity reduction is often accomplished using chemical coagulants such as alum. The use of alum is widely associated with potential development of health issues and generation of voluminous sludge. Natural coagulants that are available in abundance can certainly be considered in addressing the drawbacks associated with the use of chemical coagulants. Twenty one types of plant-based natural coagulants categorized as fruit waste and others are identified and presented collectively with their research summary in this review. The barriers and prospects of commercialization of natural coagulants in near future are also discussed.  相似文献

Ecological modeling for water quality management of Kwangyang Bay, Korea   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
This study estimated the appropriate pollutant load reduction from point sources in Kwangyang Bay, Korea, using an eco-hydrodynamic model. The total chemical oxygen demand (COD), nitrogen (TN), and phosphorus (TP) loads from rivers and ditches that provide input to the bay were approximately 2.8x10(4), 2.5x10(4), and 5.9x10(2) kg day-1, respectively. Wastewater discharge from industrial complexes was the greatest contributor to pollutant loads in the inner part of the bay. COD values in the inner part of the bay were greater than 3.0 mg l-1, and exceeded Korean seawater quality grade III limits. A residual current was simulated, using a hydrodynamic model, to have a slightly complicated pattern in the inner part of the bay, ranging from 0.001 to 8 cm s-1. In the outer part of the bay, the simulated current flowed out to the South Sea with a southward flow at a maximum of 15 cm s-1. The results of the ecological model simulation of COD levels showed high concentrations, exceeding 4 mg l-1, in the southwest of the Myodo, an area of wastewater discharge, and lower levels, approaching less than 1 mg l-1, closer to the outer part of the bay. Engineering countermeasures to reduce the organic and inorganic material loads from point sources by more than 45% were required to keep the COD levels below 2 mg l-1.  相似文献
