The humic monomer catechol was reacted with (14)C-isoproturon and some of its metabolites, including (14)C-4-isopropylaniline, in aqueous solution under a stream of oxygen. Only in the case of (14)C-4-isopropylaniline, incorporation in oligomers, in fulvic acid-like polymers, and in humic acid-like polymers by covalent bonds was observed. The main oligomer was identified by mass spectrometry as a trimer, 4,5-bis-(4-isopropylphenylamino)-3,5-cyclohexadiene-1,2-dione. Biomineralization of (14)C-compounds to (14)CO(2) in a loamy soil and release of (14)C from soil columns into percolate water decreased in the order: free isoproturon >free 4-isopropylaniline>fulvic acid-like polymers>trimer>humic acid-like polymers. In soil columns, a small but measurable migration of (14)C from polymers from upper to deeper soil layers could be detected; most of this (14)C was bound again in a non-extractable form. According to present understanding, persistent superlipophilic chemicals — such as octachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin, octachlorodibenzofuran, Mirex etc — with log Kow > 6 and cross sections > 9.5 Å, bioconcentrate in aquatic organisms only little from ambient water. The most convincing argument against it is that in bioconcentration experiments with superlipophilic chemicals amounts applied exceeded water solubility by several orders of magnitude. This paper describes various methods for determining bioconcentration factors (BCF) of superlipophilic compounds. As exemplified with octachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin, BCF values evaluated by these methods match well with those calculated by QSARs for fish and mussels based on log Kow and water solubility. As expected, these BCF values exceed previous values by several orders of magnitude. For BCF evaluation of superlipophilic chemicals in aquatic organisms we recommend:
- flow-through systems, kinetic method (OECD guideline No. 305 E)
- ambient concentrations < water solubility
- during the uptake and especially during the elimination phase no toxic effects of the test organisms should occur.

Food waste is the largest constituent of municipal solid waste in Hong Kong, but food waste recycling is still in its infancy. With the imminent saturation of all landfill sites by 2020, multiple technologies are needed to boost up the food waste recycling rate in Hong Kong. Conversion of food waste into animal feeds is prevalent in Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan, treating over 40 % of their recycled food waste. This direction is worth exploring in Hong Kong once concerns over food safety are resolved. Fortunately, while feeding food waste to pigs and chickens poses threats to public health, feeding it to fish is considered low risk. In order to examine the feasibility of converting food waste into fish feed in Hong Kong, this paper investigates the market demand, technical viability, feed quality, regulatory hurdles, and potential contribution. The results show that a significant amount of food waste can be recycled by converting it into fish feed due to the enormous demand from feed factories in mainland China. Two conversion technologies, heat drying and black soldier fly bioconversion, are studied extensively. Black soldier fly bioconversion is preferable because the end-product, insect powder, is anticipated to gain import approval from mainland China. The presence of Maillard reaction products (MRP) in foods and food components is due to the non-enzymatic reaction between protein and carbohydrate residues triggered by thermal steps during food processing. The objective of this study was to assess the effect of MRPs and increasing lysine concentrations on S. Typhimurium growth and the expression of cadA which may be an indirect determinant of Salmonella virulence response. Variations in lysine concentrations (from 0 to 0.5 mM) did not exert any effect either on the final optical density after 6-hour incubation or the growth rates of S. Typhimurium in media containing MRPs. In contrast to the reduced final absorbancy of the bacterial cultures grown with histidine and arginine MRPs supplementations (0.1%), growth rates, in general, remained unaltered by all MRPs at each lysine concentration when compared to the control (M9 pH 5.8, no MRPs added). The induction levels of cadA in media containing 0.1% MRPs were close to cadA induction in the reference media (M9, pH 5.8 and no MRPs) and did not exceed the corresponding values by more than approximately 30%. Although the observed negligible induction of cadA under these conditions complies with the concept of its potential “anti-virulence” function, additional studies involving various concentrations and more refined MRPs are needed. 相似文献

This 3-wave longitudinal study examined (a) the causal direction of the relationships among psychosocial work characteristics (e.g., job demands, job control, and supervisor support) and indicators of learning-related behavior (e.g., motivation to learn and active problem solving), and (b) whether these relationships differed across age, by comparing the results for young (≤30), middle-aged (31–44) and older (≥45) workers. The results for the total sample revealed significant reciprocal causal relationships among job demands, job control, and learning-related behavior. Furthermore, significant age differences were found in the level of the work characteristics and learning-related behavior, as well as in the cross-lagged relationships among the variables. Compared to earlier—predominantly cross-sectional—results, the present study underlines the importance of taking a dynamic as well as a life-span view on the relationships between work and learning-related behavior. Abstract Mass balance and fate of atrazine‐ 14C and pentachlorophenol‐ 14C (PCP‐ 14C) were studied in short‐term tests in a closed aerated laboratory soil‐plant system, using two concentrations in soil and two plant species, as well as under outdoor conditions for one vegetation period. In the laboratory, for both pesticides bioaccu‐mulation factors of radiocarbon taken up by the roots into plants were low. They were higher for lower (1 ppm) than for higher soil concentrations (6 ppm for atra‐zine, 4 ppm for pentachlorophenol) and varied with the plant species. Mineralization to 14CO2 in soil was negatively related to soil concentration only for PCP‐ 14C. Conversion rates in soil including the formation of soil‐bound residues were higher for the lower concentrations of both pesticides than for the higher ones; conversion rates in plants were species‐dependent. In 14 terms of CO2 formation and of conversion rates, PCP was less persistent in soil than was atrazine. For both pesticides, laboratory data on conversion and mineralization gave a rough prediction of their persistence in soil under long‐term outdoor conditions, whereas bio‐accumulation factors in plants under long‐term outdoor conditions could not be predicted by short‐term laboratory experiments. 相似文献
