The revised National Ambient Air Quality Standards for PM include fine particulate standards based upon mass measurements of PM2.5. It is possible in arid and semi-arid regions to observe significant coarse mode intrusion in the PM2.5 measurement. In this work, continuous PM10, PM2.5, and PM1.0 were measured during several windblown dust events in Spokane, WA. PM2.5 constituted approximately 30% of the PM10 during the dust event days, compared with approximately 48% on the non-dusty days preceding the dust events. Both PM10 and PM2.5 were enhanced during the dust events. However, PM1.0 was not enhanced during dust storms that originated within the state of Washington. During a dust storm that originated in Asia and impacted Spokane, PM1.0 was also enhanced, although the Asian dust reached Washington during a period of stagnation and poor dispersion, so that local sources were also contributing to high particulate levels. The "intermodal" region of PM, defined as particles ranging in aerodynamic size from 1.0 to 2.5 microns, was found to represent a significant fraction of PM2.5 (approximately 51%) during windblown dust events, compared with 28% during the non-dusty days before the dust events. 相似文献

Levels of selected sparsely investigated persistent organic pollutants (POPs) have been measured in organisms from two Arctic lakes on Bj?rn?ya (Bear Island). Elevated levels of chlorobornanes (CHBs) (up to 46.7 ng/g wet weight=ww), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) (up to 27.2 ng/g ww), polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs) (up to 1.1 ng/g ww) and polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs, only 4 congeners) (up to 62.7 pg/g ww), were measured in biota from Lake Ellasj?en. In Lake ?yangen, located only 5 km north of Ellasj?en, levels of these contaminants were significantly lower. delta(15)N-values were 7-10 per thousand higher in organisms from Ellasj?en as compared to ?yangen. This is attributed to biological inputs related to seabird activities. The present study illustrates that contaminants such as CHBs, brominated flame retardants and PCNs accumulate in the Ellasj?en food web in a manner similar to PCBs and conventional organochlorine pesticides. Transport mechanisms that control PCB and DDT distributions, i.e. atmospheric long-range transport and biotransport by seabirds, are also relevant for the contaminants investigated in the present study. 相似文献

In silicone rubber crosslinked with bis(2,4-dichlorobenzoyl) peroxide (DCBP) as initiator about 0.1% of DCBP is converted into polychlorobiphenyls (PCBs). The PCB content in silicone rubber determined by high resolution gas chromatography (HRGC) after its destruction by HF is around 10 mg/kg. 29 PCB congeners were detected. This paper summarizes the results of research conducted at Ar-gonne National Laboratory (ANL) to develop and design a novel method for the recovery of CO2 from flue gases. The basic process concept Involves the combustion of a hydrocarbon fuel using a mixture of oxygen and carbon dioxide (or CO2 and H20) rather than air as the oxidant, which results In a product stream that contains primarily CO2 and H2O. This stream Is then dried and conditioned to meet the specifications of the end user, A slip stream of CO2 (or CO2, and H20) is used as a diluent in the combustion chamberto maintain a flame temperature equivalent to the temperature that would otherwise be obtained using air as an oxidant. The cost-effectiveness of the process in recovering C02 is dependent on the scale of the operation, the type of fuel used, the cost of oxygen, and the cost of capital. Despite the presence of numerous studies in the literature examining the phytotoxicity of Pb, there is a lack of precise quantitative data on limiting concentrations of Pb for plant growth. Using the PhreeqcI chemical equilibrium model, simulations were conducted to examine the speciation of Pb in concentrated and dilute nutrient solutions. Due to the higher P concentration of Hoagland's solution (1000microM), precipitation of chloropyromorphite (Pb5(PO4)3Cl) was predicted to occur at lower pH values, and at lower Pb concentrations, than for a dilute nutrient solution (2microM P). Although nutrient solutions prepared in the glasshouse were supersaturated (and Pb concentrations were substantially higher than predicted by modeling), they confirmed the importance of the P concentration in influencing the precipitation of Pb. Given the low solubility of Pb-phosphates, nutrient solutions with low P concentrations should be utilized, and plant growth should be related to measured Pb concentrations rather than to the quantity of Pb initially added. 相似文献

The presence of microcystins in cyanobacterial samples collected from the Bleiloch reservoir, formerly an important drinking-water supply in Thuringia, Germany, was proven by application of a combination of recently developed analytical methods. The raw extracts were cleaned by size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) or solid-phase extraction (SPE). The determination of microcystins was achieved by different HPLC separation followed by the application of alternative detection methods (UV, diode array detection (DAD), and mass spectrometry (MS), respectively). Furthermore, the different results of clean-up by SPE and SEC are demonstrated. The identity of microcystins was verified by MS/MS measurements. In the cyanobacterial sample from 1998, microcystin-RR, -LR and -YR were found, whereas in 1999 only microcystin-LR and -YR were detectable. In addition to detection of cell-bound microcystins, in 1999 traces of dissolved microcystins in water from the Bleiloch reservoir were detected. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's National Exposure Research Laboratory is pursuing a project to improve the methodology for modeling human exposure to motor vehicle emissions. The overall project goal is to develop improved methods for modeling the source through the air pathway to human exposure in significant exposure microenvironments. Current particulate matter (PM) emission models, particle emission factor model (used in the United States, except California) and motor vehicle emission factor model (used in California only), are suitable only for county-scale modeling and emission inventories. There is a need to develop a site-specific real-time emission factor model for PM emissions to support human exposure studies near roadways. A microscale emission factor model for predicting site-specific real-time motor vehicle PM (MicroFacPM) emissions for total suspended PM, PM less than 10 microm aerodynamic diameter, and PM less than 2.5 microm aerodynamic diameter has been developed. The algorithm used to calculate emission factors in MicroFacPM is disaggregated, and emission factors are calculated from a real-time fleet, rather than from a fleet-wide average estimated by a vehicle-miles-traveled weighting of the emission factors for different vehicle classes. MicroFacPM requires input information necessary to characterize the site-specific real-time fleet being modeled.
