A three months old clone of 76 asexually produced F2 Heterostegina depressa D'Obbigny, 1826 (Foraminifera) was subdivided into two groups which were cultivated for 5 months, one at 300 lux, the other at 600 lux. Nourishment was provided by symbiotic photosynthesizing algae. The 300-lux group added 1 whorl, the 600-lux group added 1/2 a whorl during the experiment, suggesting that the first group was nearer the optimum for growth than the second. Growth rates reacted but slowly to changes in environmental conditions. Also, specimens within the same culture dish showed great differences in response. In the 600-lux group, many specimens ceased to grow entirely, while others continued. Cessation of growth tends to produce a rounded test shape, by filling-in of the apertural angle, while rapid growth tends to be correlated with flaring tests (i.e., tests with an open spiral). In addition, there is a trend toward increased flaring during normal ontogenetic development. Shell damage is greater in rapidly growing individuals; walls are apparently thicker in slowly growing and in resting individuals. Ecological interpretation of morphological characteristics is hampered by: (1) a lag effect between growth response and environmental change; (2) slowing or termination of growth under stressful conditions with corresponding minor changes in morphology; (3) great variation in response between sibling individuals within the same culture dish; (4) aging effects.  相似文献

Vertical profiles of physical, chemical and phytoplanktonic parameters are described, at the level of the thermocline, in the area of Banyuls-sur-Mer, France. The results show that the thermocline divides two masses of water: (1) Mediterranean surface water with low nutrient concentrations and a salinity below 38.00 ‰; (2) deep, nutrient-rich upwelled water (N?NO3 >3 μat-g·l-1, P?PO4>0.3 μat-g·l-1, >38.30 ‰ S), which comes from the upper limit of the Mediterranean intermediate water, usually located at the 200 m level. Consequently, conditions are suitable for high production rates at the bottom of the thermocline, where Chl a is above 0.5 mg·m-3; dominant species are Nitzschia delicatissima and N. pungens. A diagram is presented explaining the different effects of the pycnoclines on primary production: eutrophication at the pycnocline levels is the result of passive accumulation of phytoplankton and organic matter during sedimentation, and/or of reduced diffusion of nutrients from deep waters towards the surface.  相似文献

Summary The production of replacement reproductives in experimentally orphaned societies was investigated in Nasutitermes princeps (Desneux). From 1 to 180 replacement queens and multiple kings, all adultoids, were found in the 13 nests that were re-collected. Normal imagos, microimagos, or a mixture of the two forms were present, depending on colony composition at the time of orphaning. In colonies with alates, the corresponding forms were found as replacement reproductives. Where only young nymphs were present, microimagos differentiated. Neither the number of queens nor their level of physogastry was correlated with the time elapsed since orphaning, but the total egg-laying rates were. We suggest that competition among queens rather than time determines individual physogastric development. Observations show that the most likely cause of accidental queen death in nature is probably nest fall from the supporting tree. Even in this case, the queen may be able to migrate to a newly rebuilt nest. An experimental simulation of this situation showed that colony migration can occur. The data indicate that the replacement of the primary queen after her accidental death cannot by itself account for the high rate of polygyny (60%) encountered in N. princeps. Summary The defensive mechanisms which protect ladybird beetles (Coccinellidae) against predators are reviewed. Besides behavioural mechanisms, such as thanatosis and reflex bleeding, chemical defence mechanisms are playing a prevalent role. Indeed, ladybirds are protected not only by their smell, but also by repulsive alkaloids, most of which are considered to be of autogenous origin. In a few cases, dietarily-acquired substances are also involved. Particular emphasis is laid on the repellent alkaloids which are contained in the haemolymph of many species. The structures of 34 nitrogen-containing compounds isolated so far are presented, and their distribution within the family is discussed in the light of the most widely accepted classification of these beetles. To conclude, the mode of release of the alkaloids, their variation through the life cycle and their repellent and toxic properties are discussed, as well as the few biosynthetic data yet available.  相似文献

The adsorption of toxic chemicals on solid substates is a potential means to clean polluted waters. Here, the adsorption of two pesticides, isoproturon and dimetomorph, on lignocellulose extracted from wheat straw is investigated at 20 °C using batch adsorption experiments. Here, we show that the sorption of both pesticides is independent of pH. The sorption capacity of lignocellulose is evaluated. We show that the presence of metallic cations has no influence on the retention capacity of lignocellulose towards pesticides.  相似文献

Several species of Doryphorina leaf beetles from Central- and South America produce oleanane triterpene glycosides in their defensive glands. The presence of pentacyclic triterpenes in insects is intriguing since they lack the key enzymes necessary to synthesize these compounds. Since -amyrin is a common constituent of leaf waxes, we hypothesized that these leaf beetles use this compound as a precursor to their oleanane glycosides. To test this hypothesis we first confirmed the presence of -amyrin in Ipomoea batatas, the food plant of Platyphora kollari. Next, adults of P. kollari were fed for 10 days with I. batatas leaf disks painted with a solution of [2,2,3-2H3]-amyrin ([2,2,3-2H3]-1). The secretion from their defensive glands was collected and analyzed by HPLC-ESIMS. The results demonstrated that the secretion of beetles fed with an amount of [2,2,3-2H3]-amyrin corresponding to the quantity of unlabeled (natural) -amyrin present in the leaf disks contained on average 5.1% of [2,2,3-2H3]-3-O--d-glucopyranosyl-(1-->4)--d-glucuronopyranosyl-hederagenin ([2,2,3-2H3]-2), whereas the secretions of beetles fed with 10 times this amount of [2,2,3-2H3]-amyrin contained on average 23.9% of [2,2,3-2H3]-2. In both series of experiments, the percentage of labeled versus unlabeled triterpene glycoside in the secretion was positively correlated with the amount of deuterated -amyrin ingested. These results demonstrate for the first time that some leaf beetles are able to metabolize a widespread triterpenic constituent of leaf wax into more complex glycosides that are stored in their defensive glands.  相似文献

A set of 62 unhatched eggs was collected from six different predatory bird species throughout Norway after incubation period was completed. They were analysed for PBDE, PBB, TBBP A and naturally occurring halogenated compounds. BDE 47, 99 and 153 were the dominating congeners, with species dependent PBDE patterns. BDE 153 was observed as the most abundant congener in eggs of peregrine falcon, golden eagle and merlin. The highest PBDE level (sum of nine congeners) was found in eggs of white-tailed sea eagle with up to 800ng/gww (median sumPBDE: 184ng/gww), followed by eggs of peregrine falcon and osprey (median sumPBDE: 155 and 105ng/gww, respectively). Golden eagle eggs showed the lowest concentration of all species (median sumPBDE: 3ng/gww). The levels in the peregrine falcon are similar to those found earlier in the Baltic region [Lindberg, P., Sellstrom, U., Haggberg, L., de Wit, C.A., 2004. Higher brominated diphenyl ethers and hexabromocyclododecane found in eggs of peregrine falcons (Falco peregrinus) breeding in Sweden. Environmental Science & Technology. 38 (1), 93-96]. The differences between species are not fully explainable, due to lack of data from the major food species. BB 101 and 153 were found in eggs of all investigated bird species. Especially in samples of white-tailed sea eagle, peregrine falcon and goshawk additional unknown penta- and hexabrominated biphenyls were detected. TBBP A was detected in all of eight eggs analysed sampled from four different bird of prey species. The naturally occurring halogenated compounds Q1, the dibromotrichloro monoterpene MHC-1, and 2,4,6-tribromoanisole (TBA) were detected in all of seven analysed samples except for one peregrine falcon egg.  相似文献

A primary photohydrolysis of monochlorobenzene into phenol in dilute aqueous solution is occuring quantitatively whatever the experimental conditions were: pH (1<pH<12), excitation wavelength (253.7 nm or 300 nm), presence or absence of oxygen, initial concentration (in the range 10?4M – 4.10?3 M). The initial quantum yield of appearance of phenol has been found to be 0.10 ± 0.02 at 253.7 nm, and 0.19 ± 0.06 at 300 nm. The excited state leading to phenol cannot be quenched by acetonitrile at concentration up to 1.9 M. An heterolytic scission of the C-Cl bond parallels the concerted scission of water; a photosubstitution mechanism cannot account for the observed phenomena, especially in acidic media.Monofluoro- and bromobenzene irradiated in degased solution undergo a similar photohydrolysis; the initial quantum yields of appearance of phenol are 0.003 ± 0.001 and 0.06 ± 0.01, respectively for fluoro- and bromobenzene.  相似文献

A saturated solution of pyrene in water was not toxic to the fish , even in the presence of ultraviolet light. A survival curve possessing one minimum, and therefore defining two LC50 values, was obtained when fish placed in water containing increasing amounts of a pyrene solution in dimethylsulfoxide were exposed to ultraviolet light after a short incubation period. The phototoxicity was linked to the presence of undissolved pyrene. A normal survival curve with only one LC50 value was found when pyrene was solubilized with the surfactant Tween-20. Practically no phototoxicity was produced when the pyrene mixtures were filtered before use, or when a saturated aqueous solution of pyrene was used. Piperonyl butoxide, present at a concentration where it was not toxic, synergized the toxicity of pyrene . The environmental significance of this observation may be considerable.  相似文献
