Ecological risk assessment and risk management call for "state-of-the-science" methods and sound scientific assessments of ecosystem health and stressor effects. In this paper recent developments of periphyton indicators of biotic integrity and ecosystem stressors of streams and wetlands are related in a framework of ecological metrics that can be used to quantify risk assessment and risk management options. Many periphyton metrics have been employed in past assessments of water quality and a periphyton indices of biotic integrity has been applied by the state of Kentucky. In addition, the sensitivity of species composition of periphytic diatom assemblages has been shown to respond predictably to ecological stressors so that specific pH, conductivity, and total phosphorus in wetlands and streams can be inferred with weighted average indices. Inference of nutrient conditions by diatom indicators of total phosphorus is shown to have sufficient precision to be a valuable complement to one-time measurement of highly variable total phosphorus in streams. Quantitative indices of sustainability and restorability of ecosystem integrity are proposed, respectively, as the changes in ecological conditions that can occur without significant change in ecological integrity or changes that are necessary to restore ecological integrity. 相似文献

Behaviour of metals like Cu and Co was studied in nearly neutral (pH ?? 6.4) mine drainage seepage in a stream downgradient of a tailing dam at Chambishi site in the Copperbelt of Zambia. They are attenuated by precipitation of ferruginous ochres that incorporate significant quantities of metals. Using chemical analysis, X-ray powder diffraction and M?ssbauer spectroscopy, we show that the ochres are composed mostly of amorphous ferric hydroxide. Close to the seepage face, the total Fe content of ochres increases due to precipitation of amorphous ferric hydroxide, but total Fe in sediment decreases further downstream. The stream then flows through wetland (dambo) where the remaining fraction of metals is removed. During rainy periods, increased flow rate may result in re-suspension of ochres, increasing thus the mobility of metals. Major ions like sulphate are conservative at the start of the dry period (May), but gypsum may probably precipitate later at the end of the dry period. Sequential extractions of bulk sediments indicate that Mn behaves differently to Fe, with a trend of increasing Mn with distance from the tailing dam. There is much more Fe than Mn in residual (Aqua Regia) fraction, indicating that amorphous ferric hydroxides are transformed to more crystalline phases deeper in sediment. Since the climax of eutrophication in the early 1980s mainly greater lakes have been investigated and monitored in terms of their nutrient charge. In the future there will still be a need to develop guidelines for monitoring the trophic status of smaller lakes. Four small lakes were investigated by the author in the years 1996 and 1997. In order to define the nutrient charge of those lakes more precisely, special emphasis has been put upon the two criteria diatoms and macrophytes. Eventually an evaluation of the lakes' catchment areas will also be an important component of these studies. Benthic diatoms are the main part of periphyton. As unicellular fast reproducing organisms they are excellent indicators for trophic situations in lakes. The diatom index denotes the trophic status of the littoral zone during the last few weeks before sampling. The macrophytes, however, reflect the nutrient charge over a longer period, i.e. several years. The macrophyte index is based on the fact that some species are most prevalent at certain nutrient loads. The effort to combine these two indication systems carries a high resolution of spatial nutrient changes as well as in temporally changes. 相似文献

Deposition is one of the main loss terms for ammonia and ammonium from the atmosphere. It is also the input for ecosystems that can lead to drastic changes and effects. Deposition networks are needed to evaluate the need and the effect of policies to reduce nitrogen emissions, but also for studying deposition parameters and for developing deposition models. As with ambient concentrations of ammonia, deposition, especially dry deposition, varies strongly in space and in time. Furthermore, the bi-directional surface-atmosphere exchange of ammonia makes the combination of ambient concentration measurements with inferential models inadequate. Developing deposition monitoring networks with reasonable accuracy and representativeness is therefore not straightforward. In Europe several projects have addressed deposition monitoring. From these results it is concluded that a monitoring strategy should consist of a network with a limited amount of super sites combined with a larger number of sites where low cost methods are applied, together with models for generalisation. 相似文献
