Tropospheric ozone (O3) levels are predicted to stay high, being a factor within "global change" with potential effects on the carbon sink strength of forest trees. Hence, new approaches to O3 risk assessment and their validation are required, although appropriate databases for adult trees are scant. Approaches based on external O3 exposure are presently being evaluated against the ones on O3 flux into leaves, as the cumulative uptake has the capacity for deriving O3 risk from cause-effect relationships. The effective dose, however, needs to account for the trees' O3 defence and tolerance in addition to O3 uptake. The current status of promoting the preferable mechanistic O3 flux concept is highlighted for major regions of Europe, addressing refinements and simplifications needed for routine use. At the pan-European scale, however, the flux-based concept is ready for use in O3 risk assessment and has the potential of meso-scale application at the forest ecosystem level. 相似文献

The influence of soil formation on copper sorption is documented based on chronosequences of soils from three river floodplains in Europe (Danube, Ebro and Elbe). Sequential extraction was used to fractionate copper in original and spiked soils in order to study the long-term and short-term behaviour of copper retention. Copper partitioning among defined geochemical fractions was mainly determined by soil pH and the contents of carbonates, organic matter and Fe-/Mn-oxides and hydroxides. Copper extracted with NH(2)OH.HCl correlated well with the contents of crystalline Fe-oxides and hydroxides, demonstrating increasing retention capacity with progressing soil development. Copper retained in original soils was found in more strongly bound fractions, whereas sorption of freshly added copper was primarily influenced by the presence of carbonates. Beyond the effect of progressing soil formation, variations in organic carbon contents due to different land use history affected the copper retention capacity of the investigated soils. 相似文献

Background, Aims and Scope The global problem concerning contamination of the environment as a consequence of human activities is increasing. Most of
the environmental contaminants are chemical by-products and heavy metals such as lead (Pb). Lead released into the environment
makes its way into the air, soil and water. Lead contributes to a variety of health effects such as decline in mental, cognitive
and physical health of the individual. An alternative way of reducing Pb concentration from the soil is through phytoremediation.
Phytoremediation is an alternative method that uses plants to clean up a contaminated area. The objectives of this study were:
(1) to determine the survival rate and vegetative characteristics of three grass species such as vetivergrass, cogongrass
and carabaograss grown in soils with different Pb levels; and (2) to determine and compare the ability of the three grass
species as potential phytoremediators in terms of Pb accumulation by plants.
Methods The three test plants: vetivergrass (Vetiveria zizanioides L.); cogongrass (Imperata cylindrica L.); and carabaograss (Paspalum conjugatum L.) were grown in individual plastic bags containing soils with 75 mg kg−1 (37.5 kg ha−1) and 150 mg kg−1 (75 kg ha−1) of Pb, respectively. The Pb contents of the test plants and the soil were analyzed before and after experimental treatments
using an atomic absorption spectrophotometer. This study was laid out following a 3 × 2 factorial experiment in a completely
randomized design.
Results On the vegetative characteristics of the test plants, vetivergrass registered the highest whole plant dry matter weight (33.85–39.39
Mg ha−1). Carabaograss had the lowest herbage mass production of 4.12 Mg ha−1 and 5.72 Mg ha−1 from soils added with 75 and 150 mg Pb kg−1, respectively. Vetivergrass also had the highest percent plant survival which meant it best tolerated the Pb contamination
in soils. Vetivergrass registered the highest rate of Pb absorption (10.16 ± 2.81 mg kg−1). This was followed by cogongrass (2.34 ± 0.52 mg kg−1) and carabaograss with a mean Pb level of 0.49 ± 0.56 mg kg−1. Levels of Pb among the three grasses (shoots + roots) did not vary significantly with the amount of Pb added (75 and 150
mg kg−1) to the soil.
Discussion Vetivergrass yielded the highest biomass; it also has the greatest amount of Pb absorbed (roots + shoots). This can be attributed
to the highly extensive root system of vetivergrass with the presence of an enormous amount of root hairs. Extensive root
system denotes more contact to nutrients in soils, therefore more likelihood of nutrient absorption and Pb uptake. The efficiency
of plants as phytoremediators could be correlated with the plants’ total biomass. This implies that the higher the biomass,
the greater the Pb uptake. Plants characteristically exhibit remarkable capacity to absorb what they need and exclude what
they do not need. Some plants utilize exclusion mechanisms, where there is a reduced uptake by the roots or a restricted transport
of the metals from root to shoots. Combination of high metal accumulation and high biomass production results in the most
metal removal from the soil.
Conclusions The present study indicated that vetivergrass possessed many beneficial characteristics to uptake Pb from contaminated soil.
It was the most tolerant and could grow in soil contaminated with high Pb concentration. Cogongrass and carabaograss are also
potential phytoremediators since they can absorb small amount of Pb in soils, although cogongrass is more tolerant to Pb-contaminated
soil compared with carabaograss. The important implication of our findings is that vetivergrass can be used for phytoextraction
on sites contaminated with high levels of heavy metals; particularly Pb.
Recommendations and Perspectives High levels of Pb in localized areas are still a concern especially in urban areas with high levels of traffic, near Pb smelters,
battery plants, or industrial facilities that burn fuel ending up in water and soils. The grasses used in the study, and particularly
vetivergrass, can be used to phytoremediate urban soil with various contaminations by planting these grasses in lawns and
public parks.

This study aimed to evaluate the leaching of pesticides and the applicability of the Attenuation Factor (AF) Model to predict their leaching. The leaching of carbofuran, carbendazim, diuron, metolachlor, alpha and beta endosulfan and chlorpyrifos was studied in an Oxisol using a field experiment lysimeter located in Dom Aquino-Mato Grosso. The samples of percolated water were collected by rain event and analyzed. Chemical and physical soil attributes were determined before pesticide application to the plots. The results showed that carbofuran was the pesticide that presented a higher leaching rate in the studied soil, so was the one representing the highest contamination potential. From the total carbofuran applied in the soil surface, around 6% leached below 50 cm. The other pesticides showed lower mobility in the studied soil. The calculated values to AF were 7.06E-12 (carbendazim), 5.08E-03 (carbofuran), 3.12E-17 (diuron), 6.66E-345 (alpha-endosulfan), 1.47E-162 (beta-endosulfan), 1.50E-06 (metolachlor), 3.51E-155 (chlorpyrifos). The behavior of an amperometric organic-phase biosensor consisting of a gold electrode modified first with a mercaptobenzothiazole self-assembled monolayer, followed by electropolymerization of polyaniline in which acetylcholinesterase as enzyme was immobilized, has been developed and evaluated for organophosphorous pesticide detection. The voltammetric results have shown that the formal potential shifts anodically as the Au/MBT/PANI/AChE/PVAc thick-film biosensor responded to acetylthiocholine substrate addition under anaerobic conditions in selected organic solvent media containing 2% v/v 0.05 M phosphate buffer, 0.1 M KCl (pH 7.2) solution. Particulate matter (PM) less than 2.5 microm in size (PM2.5) source apportionment by chemical mass balance receptor modeling was performed to enhance regional characterization of source impacts in the southeastern United States. Secondary particles, such as NH4HSO4, (NH4)2SO4, NH4NO3, and secondary organic carbon (OC) (SOC), formed by atmospheric photochemical reactions, contribute the majority (>50%) of ambient PM2.5 with strong seasonality. Source apportionment results indicate that motor vehicle and biomass burning are the two main primary sources in the southeast, showing relatively more motor vehicle source impacts rather than biomass burning source impacts in populated urban areas and vice versa in less urbanized areas. Spatial distributions of primary source impacts show that each primary source has distinctively different spatial source impacts. Results also find impacts from shipping activities along the coast. Spatiotemporal correlations indicate that secondary particles are more regionally distributed, as are biomass burning and dust, whereas impacts of other primary sources are more local. 相似文献

Biologically derived polyesters known as polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) represent a potentially "sustainable" replacement to fossil-fuel-based thermoplastics. However, current commercial practices that produce PHA with pure microbial cultures grown on renewable, but refined, feedstocks (i.e., glucose) under sterile conditions do not represent a sustainable commodity. Here, we report on PHA production with a mixed microbial consortium indigenous to an activated sludge process on carbon present in municipal wastewaters. Reactors operated under anaerobic/aerobic and aerobic-only mode and fed primary solids fermenter liquor maintained a mixed microbial consortium capable of synthesizing PHA at 10 to 25% (w/w), while reducing soluble COD by approximately 62 to 71%. More critically, an aerobic batch reactor seeded from the anaerobic/aerobic reactor and fed fermenter liquor achieved approximately 53% PHA (w/w). Results presented suggest that environmentally benign production of biodegradable polymers is feasible. We further used PHA-rich biomass to produce a natural fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composite that can be used to offset advanced wastewater treatment costs. 相似文献

Immobilization of Pb(II), Cd(II) and Ni(II) ions on kaolinite and montmorillonite surfaces from aqueous medium 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
The present study investigates the immobilization of Pb(II), Cd(II) and Ni(II) on clays (kaolinite and montmorillonite) in aqueous medium through the process of adsorption under a set of variables (concentration of metal ion, amount of clay, pH, time and temperature of interaction). Increasing pH favours the removal of metal ions till they are precipitated as the insoluble hydroxides. The uptake is rapid with maximum adsorption being observed within 180 min for Pb(II) and Ni(II) and 240 min for Cd(II). A number of available models like the Lagergren pseudo first-order kinetics, second-order kinetics, Elovich equation, liquid film diffusion and intra-particle diffusion are utilized to evaluate the kinetics and the mechanism of the immobilization interactions. Two isotherm equations due to Langmuir and Freundlich showed good fits with the experimental data. Kaolinite and montmorillonite have considerable Langmuir monolayer capacity with respect to Pb(II), Cd(II) and Ni(II), the values being in the range of 6.8-11.5mg/g (kaolinite) and 21.1-31.1mg/g (montmorillonite). The Freundlich adsorption capacity follows a similar order. The thermodynamics of the immobilization process indicates the same to be exothermic with Pb(II) and Ni(II), but endothermic with Cd(II). The interactions with Pb(II) and Ni(II) are accompanied by decrease in entropy and Gibbs energy while the endothermic immobilization of Cd(II) is supported by an increase in entropy and an appreciable decrease in Gibbs energy. The results have established good potentiality for kaolinite and montmorillonite to remove heavy metals like Pb(II), Cd(II) and Ni(II) from aqueous medium through adsorption-mediated immobilization. 相似文献
