The objective of this study is to develop techniques for assessing and analysing land desertification in Yulin of Northwest China, as a typical monitoring region through the use of remotely sensed data and geographic information systems (GIS). The methodology included the use of Landsat TM data from 1987, 1996 and 2006, supplemented by aerial photos in 1960, topographic maps, field work and use of other existing data. From this, land cover, the Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), farmland, woodland and grassland maps at 1:100,000 were prepared for land desertification monitoring in the area. In the study, all data was entered into a GIS using ILWIS software to perform land desertification monitoring. The results indicate that land desertification in the area has been developing rapidly during the past 40 years. Although land desertification has to some extent been controlled in the area by planting grasses and trees, the issue of land desertification is still serious. The study also demonstrates an example of why the integration of remote sensing with GIS is critical for the monitoring of environmental changes in arid and semi-arid regions, e.g. in land desertification monitoring in the Yulin pilot area. However, land desertification monitoring using remote sensing and GIS still needs to be continued and also refined for the purpose of long-term monitoring and the management of fragile ecosystems in the area. 相似文献

This study presents the chemical composition of dry deposition by using dry deposition plate and water surfaces sampler during daytime and nighttime sampling periods at a near highway traffic sampling site. In addition, the characterization for mass and water soluble species of total suspended particulate (TSP), PM2.5 and PM10 were also studied at this sampling site during August 22 to October 31 of 2006 around central Taiwan. The samples collected were analyzed by using Ion Chromatography (DIONEX 100) for the ionic species analysis. Results of the particulate dry deposition fluxes are higher in the water surfaces sampler than that of the dry deposition plate. In other words, the results also indicated that water surface can absorb more ambient dry deposition inorganic pollutants than that of dry deposition plate in this study. The results obtained in this study indicated that the ionic species of Cl(-), NO3(-) and SO4(2-) occupied about average 60-70% downward flux out of total ionic species for either dry deposition plate or water surfaces sampler during August to October of 2006 at this near highway traffic sampling site. 相似文献

An enzyme-limited immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to monitor spatial and temporal variation of microcystins (MCs) in Lake Taihu. MC concentrations were higher in summer and autumn than in other seasons. Maximal MC concentration was 15.6 mug L(-1). The total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) pollution in regional agricultural soils was investigated. Seventy soil samples collected
from surface layers (0–20 cm) and horizons of five selected pedons in the vicinity of a petrochemical complex in Guangzhou,
China were analyzed, and the vertical variation and spatial variability of TPH were evaluated. The TPH concentration in top
soils around the petrochemical complex ranged from 1,179.3 to 6,354.9 mg kg − 1, with the average of 2,676.6 mg kg − 1. Furthermore, significant differences between land-use types showed that the TPH concentration in top soils was strongly
influenced by accidental spills. Both the TPH trends in pedons and the identified hot-spot areas also showed that the accidental
explosions or burning accidents were mainly responsible for the pollution. The results reported here suggest that the regular
monitoring and inspection shall be conducted for safety and to avoid or minimize the accidents, and the effective measures
should be taken to remediate the contaminated areas and to assure that the important industrialization of Guangzhou area would

Evenly distributed sampling design is generally considered as an efficient sampling design. It is widely used in sampling
for the environmental survey. In this paper, we present a novel method for generating N evenly distributed samples within a given irregular polygon via simulating the movements of some ideal homogeneous point
charges. Initially, charges are randomly put into the sampling region; then, they are freed and held orderly; and after enough
runs, the charges will finally reach a stable state with all of them having a zero resultant force and velocity; and so they
distribute evenly within the region. Their layout can thus be considered as an evenly distributed sampling design. The main
advantages of this method are: (1) it is easy to understand and implement; (2) it is efficient in both running and generating
better designs. Analysis and experimental results indicate that this method is an efficient and robust method for generating

Regional landscape ecological security is an important issue for ecological security, and has a great influence on national
security and social sustainable development. The Pearl River Delta (PRD) in southern China has experienced rapid economic
development and intensive human activities in recent years. This study, based on landscape analysis, provides a method to
discover the alteration of character among different landscape types and to understand the landscape ecological security status.
Based on remotely sensed products of the Landsat 5 TM images in 1990 and the Landsat 7 ETM+ images in 2005, landscape classification
maps of nine cities in the PRD were compiled by implementing Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System technology.
Several indices, including aggregation, crush index, landscape shape index, Shannon’s diversity index, landscape fragile index,
and landscape security adjacent index, were applied to analyze spatial–temporal characteristics of landscape patterns in the
PRD. A landscape ecological security index based on these outcomes was calculated by projection pursuit using genetic algorithm.
The landscape ecological security of nine cities in the PRD was thus evaluated. The main results of this research are listed
as follows: (1) from 1990 to 2005, the aggregation index, crush index, landscape shape index, and Shannon’s diversity index
of nine cities changed little in the PRD, while the landscape fragile index and landscape security adjacent index changed
obviously. The landscape fragile index of nine cities showed a decreasing trend; however, the landscape security adjacent
index has been increasing; (2) from 1990 to 2005, landscape ecology of the cities of Zhuhai and Huizhou maintained a good
security situation. However, there was a relatively low value of ecological security in the cities of Dongguan and Foshan.
Except for Foshan and Guangzhou, whose landscape ecological security situation were slightly improved, the cities had reduced
values in landscape ecological security, with the most decreased number 0.52 in Zhaoqing. Results of this study offer important

Characterizing hydrochemical properties of springs in Taiwan based on their geological origins 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This study was performed to characterize hydrochemical properties of springs based on their geological origins in Taiwan.
Stepwise discriminant analysis (DA) was used to establish a linear classification model of springs using hydrochemical parameters.
Two hydrochemical datasets—ion concentrations and relative proportions of equivalents per liter of major ions—were included
to perform prediction of the geological origins of springs. Analyzed results reveal that DA using relative proportions of
equivalents per liter of major ions yields a 95.6% right assignation, which is superior to DA using ion concentrations. This
result indicates that relative proportions of equivalents of major hydrochemical parameters in spring water are more highly
associated with the geological origins than ion concentrations do. Low percentages of Na + equivalents are common properties of springs emerging from acid-sulfate and neutral-sulfate igneous rock. Springs emerging
from metamorphic rock show low percentages of Cl − equivalents and high percentages of HCO3-_{3}^{-} equivalents, and springs emerging from sedimentary rock exhibit high Cl − /SO42-_{4}^{2-} ratios. 相似文献

Total suspended particle (TSP) collected at the fifth floor of House Dust in Hunan University, China, was analyzed in terms of microscopic morphology and chemical composition. The fine particles (50?nm-2?μm) in the TSP were analyzed by a high-resolution transmission electron microscope equipped with an energy-dispersive X-ray analyzer (HRTEM/EDS). Results showed that the particles were in shapes of plate, irregular and agglomerate. Based on EDS results, these fine particulate matter was primarily composed of Fe-rich (35.82-61.29%), Ca-rich (30.18-36.77%) and Si-rich (18.95-32.28%) particles. Other elements mainly including Mg (0.47-4.97%), Al (0.45-14.57%), S (0.45-4.73%), K (1.13-2.13%) and Zn (0.67-3.85%) were also observed. The sources analysis indicated that the HRTEM particles mainly originated from coal combustion, traffic emission, vehicles exhaust emission and fugitive soil or cement particulate matter. The coarse particles (4-50?μm) were detected by environmental scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray detector (ESEM/EDS). Based on a simple algorithm, ESEM particles were categorized into five groups: C-bearing (46.15%, 67% and 86.98%), Si + Ca-bearing (21.48?+?11.80%, 16.51?+?10.81% and 16.32?+?10.62%), Si + Al-bearing (20.06?+?12.40%, 20.16?+?11.22% and 15.31?+?11.25%), Si-bearing (34.40%, 26.92% and 27.15%) particles and aggregates, most of which exhibit obvious crystalline structure, and these ESEM particles mainly derived from vehicles exhaust emission, coal combustion, soil, and biomass burning, while the aggregates are indicative of atmospheric reaction progress. Discharge measurement in a tidal stream is always a difficult task. Owing to the complex flow conditions, discharge measurement in tidal streams has to be finished quickly, and must be highly efficient in order to yield an accurate measurement of real-time discharge. Measuring the discharge of tidal streams is done in three steps: (1) establishing the stage and cross-sectional area relation, (2) estimating the index velocity by using a velocity distribution equation based on the probability concept, (3) establishing the relationship between the index and mean velocities. Then the cross-sectional area and mean velocity can be estimated by the gage height and index velocity, respectively. The discharge of tidal streams is computed as the product of the cross-sectional area and mean velocity. The velocity distribution of the Taipei Bridge and Guan-du Bridge in the Tanshui River were established and analyzed to demonstrate the use of discharge measurement by index velocity for estimating the discharge of this tidal stream. The results reveal no large difference between the discharges measured by the conventional methods and the index velocity. This pilot study proposed a cost-effectiveness and efficient method. It is an easy, quick, and accurate model for measuring the real-time discharge of a tidal stream. It makes automatic, real-time, and continuous monitoring of the discharge in a tidal stream become possible. 相似文献

Odor and corrosion are common problems in domestic wastewater collection, transportation, pumping, and treatment processes. Based on the comparison among odorous compounds and onsite observations at a wastewater lift station, H2S is more likely to have caused the odor and corrosion problems than methanethiol and other organic sulfides. The field data from both air and wastewater quality monitoring demonstrated that more H2S (1 ppmv) was formed at a more negative redox potential, lower pH, and a higher temperature of wastewater. Since the lower detection level of most current analytical techniques is much greater than human’s smell and the reference concentration for adverse health effects, automatic monitoring on the threshold of H2S formation provides a mechanism to trigger control techniques only when necessary for cost saving purposes. Based on Gibbs free energy, a more negative redox potential is required to form H2S with an increase in pH and a decrease in temperature and SO 4 2? concentration. However, pH effect is more significant than both temperature and SO 4 2? concentration for H2S formation. It is recommended that H2S control techniques be started when the redox potential is below ?44 mV, the pH is lower than 5.6, and the temperature is higher than 11.5 °C to control H2S below the reference concentration. Corroded concrete particles were examined by X-ray diffraction, which showed that the dominant crystal form was quartz. 相似文献
