The male secondary sex characters of Jaera albifrons

Bocquet are described with the Stereoscan electron microscope (S.E.M.). These characters, which are present on the peraeopods, are the only means of identification for these Jaera species which together form the Jaera albifrons group (Isopoda, Asellota). The male praeoperculum (modified, fused, first pair of pleopods) and appendix masculinae (modified endites of the second pair of pleopods) have also been studied with the S.E.M. and possible functions of the various sex characters are discussed. Both the male operculum and appendix masculinae are similar for each species, suggesting that copulation with females of a different species is anatomically possible. The fact that hybrids are rarely collected in ecological investigations is discussed with reference to the present known information. Two methods of copulation for the members of this group have been proposed and these are discussed. A method of sperm transfer along the male operculum is outlined. 相似文献

The patterns of stimulus available to moths flying along pheromone plumes in a 3-m-long wind tunnel were characterized using a high frequency photoionization detector in conjunction with an inert tracer gas. Four contrasting flow regimes and source conditions were produced: odor released in pulses from a vertical and horizontal array of four sources, odor released continuously from a point source, and odor released continuously from a point source into an oscillatory wake. Although the four flow regimes produced plumes of intermittent and fluctuating concentration, there were considerable differences in the structure of the signal presented to the sensor. Pulses of tracer gas released at 10 Hz retained most of their longitudinal and lateral separation. The plume growing in the disturbed flow (`oscillatory'), was broader in its lateral extent than the plume growing in an undisturbed flow (`continuous'), and the concentrations in the former were lower at each downstream position. The signal recorded in the disturbed flow had higher intermittency, but the ratio between the peak concentration and the signal mean was lower than in the continuous plume. Time scales were typically longer in the tunnel than in a field setting, but length scales and the main features of intermittency and fluctuation were similar. Moths flying along plumes of pheromone in this and similar wind tunnels typically slow their velocity and narrow the lateral excursions of their flight track as they approach a pheromone source. Which features of the plumes measured in this study account for these behavioral reactions remains to be determined. 相似文献

Computer models have found widespread application in order to help elucidate and predict changes in environmental systems. One such application is the prediction of trace metal speciation in aqueous systems. This is achieved by solving a set of non-linear equations involving equilibrium constants for all the components in the system, within mass and charge balance constraints. In this study a comparison of the predicted uranium speciation from two computer programs, WHAM and PHREEQCI, is used to illustrate the effect variations in thermodynamic data can have on the models produced. Using the original thermodynamic data provided with the models, WHAM predicted the UO2(2+) ion as the major species (84%) while PHREEQCI predicted UO2(HPO4)2(2-) as the major species (86%). Substituting uranium data from the Nuclear Energy Agency Thermochemical Database project (NEA-TDB) into both programs produced similar results from each program, with UO2F+ predicted to dominate (68%) in a groundwater sample. Natural water samples often contain humic substances. The possible interaction of such substances with uranium was also modelled. The WHAM program includes a discreet site electrostatic humic substance model, however in order to use the PHREEQCI program to model humic substance interactions, a 'model fulvic acid' dataset was added to the program. These models predicted 85 to 98% uranium-humic substance species at neutral pH. This indicates that humic substances do need to be taken into account when modelling uranium speciation in natural water samples. 相似文献

It is anticipated that the establishment of the industrial complex at Sines, Alentejo, Portugal, will have some impact on the environment. Details of the methods used in the monitoring programme are provided. Records of the epiphytic lichen vegetation in permanent quadrats have been made and changes shown in selected sites over a three year period are discussed. Material has been collected for analysis for heavy metals and the results discussed. There is considerable variation in replicates and in interspecies values. The problem of age and bio-accumulation is mentioned. Scanning electron microscopy has shown the accumulation of particulates, as yet unidentified, the quantity varying with increase in age and surface texture. A broadly based study of the local epiphytic flora is being carried out to record the present day diversity. There appears, as yet, to be no detectable influence of the industrial complex on the epiphytic flora of the permanent quadrats. 相似文献

The South Carolina Estuarine and Coastal Assessment Program (SCECAP) was initiated in 1999 to assess the condition of the state's coastal habitats using multiple measures of water quality, sediment quality, and biological condition. Sampling was subsequently expanded to include components required for the National Coastal Assessment (Coastal 2000) Program. Habitats are classified as either tidal creeks (<#60; 100 meters in width) or larger open water bodies. Approximately 30 sites are sampled within each habitat during the summer months using a probability-based random sampling design. Results obtained from the first two years of sampling documented significant differences in several water quality parameters (DO, salinity, pH, turbidity, fecal coliform bacteria, total nitrogen, TKN, total phosphorus) and biological measures (chlorophyll-a, finfish and crustacean abundance and biomass and a number of benthic species) between the tidal creek and open water habitats. These differences highlight the value of partitioning shallow water habitats separately from the larger open water bodies traditionally sampled in estuarine monitoring programs, especially since tidal creeks serve as critical nursery areas for many species. An on-line method has been developed for separating inorganic and organic bound uranium species present in river water samples. The method utilised a small chelating resin (Hyphan) column incorporated into the sample introduction manifold of an ICP-MS instrument. The method was evaluated for samples from rivers on Dartmoor (Devon, UK), an area of granite overlain with peat bogs. The results indicate that organic-uranium species form a major proportion (80%) of the total dissolved uranium present. Further work with synthetic water samples indicated that the level of dissolved organic carbon played a greater role in determining the level of organic-uranium species than did sample pH. Computer models for the water samples were constructed using the WHAM program (incorporating uranium data from the Nuclear Energy Agency Thermochemical Database project) in order to predict the levels of organic-uranium species that would form. By varying the proportion of humic and fulvic acids used in the humic component, predictions within 10% of the experimental results were obtained. The program did exhibit a low bias at higher pH values (7.5) and low organic carbon concentrations (0.5 microg ml(-1)), but under the natural conditions prevalent in the Dartmoor water samples, the model predictions were successful. 相似文献

More than one billion South Asians are affected by water scarcity. Pressure on water resources is likely to grow as a result of population growth, urban expansion, and climate change. This paper assesses the impacts of these effects on the historical hydrological baseline, with particular focus on irrigation. A geospatial water balance model was developed for this purpose based on geo‐referenced information available in scientific public domain databases. Annual water supply and demand for a baseline period 1950–2000 were calculated and projected to 2050 using (1) outputs from 19 Global Circulation Models from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 for a Representative Concentration Pathway 4.5; (2) population projections to 2050; and (3) historical land‐use patterns at the country level. Improvements in water use efficiency and storage capacity were analyzed using the Modified Water Scarcity Index of the baseline and the projected water balance in 2050 at the watershed scale. 相似文献
