In this study, a suite of sublethal stress biomarkers were analyzed in juveniles of the sentinel species, the Pacific oyster
Crassostrea gigas, with a view to using them as pollution monitoring tools. The aim of this work was (1) to study baseline seasonal variations
of biomarkers in different body compartments of C. gigas in the reference site and, after selecting biomarkers presenting no seasonal variations, (2) to compare responses of these
biomarkers between contaminated and reference sites. 相似文献
One of the limits of Cd2+-phytoextraction is the high toxicity of this metal to plants. Growth restriction, chlorosis and necrosis are usually accompanied with a large disturbance of the uptake of essential elements. This work aims to study the effects of cadmium (Cd2+) on potassium (K+), calcium (Ca2+) and nitrogen (N) acquisition, and their consequences on growth in two halophytes species: Sesuvium portulacastrum and Mesembryanthemum crystallinum. Seedlings were grown for 30 days in split-root conditions. One half of the root system was immersed in complete nutrient solution (Basal medium (B)) supplemented with 100 microM Cd2+, and the other half was immersed in a Cd2+-free medium, containing all nutrients (B/Cd plants) or deprived of potassium ((B-K)/Cd) or calcium ((B-Ca)/Cd) or nitrogen ((B-N)/Cd). Using this approach, we demonstrated that K+ and Ca2+ uptake was impaired in roots exposed to Cd2+. Concerning N, we noticed no indication of uptake inhibition by Cd2+. However, restriction of K+ uptake by roots was compensated by an increase in the K+-use efficiency, so that growth was not inhibited. Calcium uptake was strongly limited by Cd2. This inhibition was accompanied by a reduction in growth of ((B-Ca)/Cd) plants. Thus, we conclude that Cd2+ limits growth of both halophytes through restriction imposed on Ca2+ uptake. We suggest that the increase of Ca2+ availability in soils could improve the growth of both species in the presence of Cd2+. This would be essential for improving their utility for extraction of this metal by from salty contaminated soils. 相似文献
Relationships between biochemical and physiological biomarkers (acetylcholinesterase [AChE], catalase, and glutathione S-transferase [GST] activities, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances, glycogen, lipids and proteins) and accumulated concentrations of contaminants (polychlorinated biphenyls [PCBs], polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and metals) were examined in the keystone species Nereis diversicolor. The chemical analyses of worms and sediments allowed the designation of the Seine estuary and the Authie estuary as a polluted and relatively clean site respectively. Worms from the Seine estuary exhibited higher GST and lower AChE activities. Generally, larger worms had higher concentrations of energy reserves. Principal component analyses clearly highlighted intersite differences: in the first plan, GST activities and chemical concentrations were inversely related to concentrations of energy reserves; in the second one, PCB concentrations and AChE activity were inversely related. Depleted levels of energy reserves could be a consequence of combating toxicants and might predict effects at higher levels of biological organization. The use of GST and AChE activities and energy reserve concentrations as biomarkers is validated in the field in this keystone species. 相似文献
Systematic measurements of both Tributyltin (TBT) and Dibutyltin (DBT) in sediments along different locations in the inner
zone of Bahía Blanca estuary were done. Two samples were taken near the main dry dock facility, at Puerto Belgrano naval base,
in Argentina. TBT concentrations from non-detected to 170.3 ng Sn g−1 were measured in the inner region of the estuary, and higher one of 3,288 ng Sn g−1 near the dry dock at Puerto Belgrano. DBT values ranging between non-detected and 75.2 ng Sn g−1 were obtained along the principal channel, but extreme concentration of 1,645 ng Sn g−1 was measured at Puerto Belgrano. These values show that this estuary is affected by organotin pollution, mainly in areas
of heavy shipyard activities. 相似文献
We report the effects of 1,2- and 1,4-dichlorobenzene (1,2-DCB and 1,4-DCB) on the aquatic macrophyte Ceratophyllum demersum. We evaluated the response of the antioxidant system through the assay of glutathione reductase (GR), guaiacol peroxidase (POD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx). Additionally, the effect of DCBs on the detoxication system by measuring the activity of glutathione-S-transferase (GST) was evaluated.
C. demersum showed elevated GST activities when exposed to 10 and 20 mg l−1 1,2-DCB, and at 10 mg l−1 for 1,4-DCB. These results show that glutathione conjugation take place at relatively high concentrations of both isomers. Significantly increased activities of POD were also detected in C. demersum exposed to concentrations above 5 mg l−1 of the corresponding isomer.
The GR activity was enhanced in plants exposed to 1,2-DCB (5 mg l−1) and 1,4-DCB (10 mg l−1). GPx was also significantly increased in exposures to the corresponding isomer, each at a concentration of 10 mg l−1. However, plants exposed to low doses of 1,4-DCB (1 mg l−1) showed significantly decreased activities of both enzymes GR and GPx.
Consequently, it is clear that the exposure of the aquatic macrophyte C. demersum to DCBs is able to cause an activation of the antioxidant system, showing an isomer specific pattern, which suggests that the defence system of this plant is playing an important role in scavenging ROS, helping to protect the organism against adverse oxidative effects generated by the prooxidant action of the tested xenobiotics. Furthermore, increased GST activities give indirect evidence on the conjugation of either DCBs or the corresponding metabolites during phase II of detoxication, which supports the elimination process of toxic metabolites from cells of C. demersum. 相似文献
Abstract: Phylogenetic diversity measures rank areas for biodiversity conservation priorities based on information encoded in phylogenies (cladograms). The goal of these ranks for conservation is to consider as many factors as possible that provide additional taxic information, such as taxa richness, taxa distributional patterns, area endemicity, and complementarity between areas. At present there are many measures that consider phylogenetic information, including node-based, genetic-distance, and feature-based measures. We devised a modified phylogenetic node-based index that we call "taxonomic endemicity standardized weight," which considers not only the taxonomic distinctness of the taxa that inhabit a given area but their endemicity as well. Once the standardized weight of the taxonomic endemicity identifies the area of highest priority, complementarity can be used to identify the second area and so on. We used this node-based index to rank priority areas for conservation in southern South America, and we compared the results of our rankings to results based on other node-based indexes. Our index identified Santiago district, in Central Chile province, as the highest priority area for conservation, followed by Maule, Malvinas, and districts of Subantarctic province. Malvinas exhibits greater complementarity relative to Santiago than Maule does, however, so Malvinas is ranked second in priority. Indexes based on phylogenetic information measure the evolutionary component of biodiversity and allow one to identify areas that will ensure the preservation of evolutionary potential and phylogenetically rare taxa. The modified index we propose is sensitive to taxic distinctness and endemicity as well and allows information from diverse taxa to be combined (i.e., different cladograms). The use of complementarity allows for preservation of the maximum quantity of taxa in a minimal number of protected areas. 相似文献
This study proposes a method of dynamic decentralization by constraints and its associated software. It can be used to allocate pollutant emissions rights among the different polluters such that they achieve both given global and local emission thresholds not to be transgressed. Knowing the maximum growth rates of polluting emissions of each polluter in the worst case, this method provides the rule of a dynamic allocation of pollutant emissions rights as well as the required initial emissions of each polluters assuring that, whatever the growth rates of the emissions below the maximum growth rates, the resulting emissions will be, both globally and locally, under their thresholds. These guaranteed initial emissions supply each polluter with a measure of risk insurance. This problem, formulated as a “tychastic” regulated system with viability constraints, is solved with mathematical and algorithmic tools of viability theory and numerical results obtained by a dedicated software are presented. 相似文献
In order to compare treatability test results evaluating low-level mercury (Hg) removal from oil refinery wastewater, improvements in Hg analytical methods were conducted at two US EPA certified analytical labs. The revisions in the analytical protocols improved Hg recoveries and hence enabled more reliable data interpretation and comparison for the specific wastewater tested. Nevertheless, significant differences between results from the two laboratories were identified in a split-sample experiment. 相似文献
