Climate change impact on countrywide water balance in Bolivia   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
There is increasing concern about the ongoing reduction in water supplies in the tropical Andes due to climate change effects such as glacier/snow melting resulting from rising air temperatures. In addition, extreme events and population growth are already directly affecting life and water renewability in the country. A countrywide integrated national plan for improving basin-scale water management in Bolivia is needed to assure water availability for agriculture, industry, mining, and human consumption. This study aims to provide a modeling tool to assess Bolivia’s past, current, and future water availability and identify basins at risk of water deficits. The Soil Water Assessment Tool was used to simulate the monthly water balance from 1997 to 2008, as well as the water balance projected to 2050 for the entire country. It considers possible changes in air temperatures and precipitation proposed by 17 Global Circulation Models as well as carbon dioxide projections derived from the Special Report Emission Scenario. Overall, model results were close to satisfactory compared to observations, with some exceptions due to lack of information for expanding the timeline and improving calibration. Based on the calculation of three hydrologic indicators, the study identifies basins that would be the most susceptible to water deficits for a baseline from 1997 to 2008, and in the event of the projected climate change, to 2050.  相似文献

Vermicomposting is the process whereby organic residues are broken down by earthworms and microorganisms. Addition of manure has been shown to be of critical importance and determines most of the changes that take place during vermicomposting. Here, we study how the rate of manure applied affects microbial biomass and activity and carbon losses. For this, we designed continuous feeding reactors in which new layers of manure were added sequentially to form an age gradient inside the reactors. We compared two application rates of pig slurry (1.5 and 3kg) and set up six reactors for each one; half of the 12 reactors initially contained a population of 500 earthworms (Eisenia fetida). We found that earthworms increased microbial biomass and were more active in reactors fed with 3kg of slurry. However, the differential rates of respiration were not reflected in C losses. The results thus showed that loss of C was not affected by the rate of pig slurry applied. We conclude that despite the strong effect that the rate of manure has on microbe-earthworm relationships, it did not affect carbon losses. We therefore recommend the use of low application rates of manure when the objective is the microbial stabilization of the residue.  相似文献

Excess boron is a growing environmental problem. It often affects agricultural yields, where reuse of wastewater for irrigation is practiced. This problem raises the need for reliable, simple and economical methods to monitor boron concentrations in wastewater and soil extracts. One such method, the commonly used azomethine-H spectrophotometric method, suffers from color interference, originating from high concentrations of dissolved organic matter, when applied to many wastewater and agricultural soil extracts. Moreover, this method only quantifies free dissolved boron and lacks the ability to quantify boron that is adsorbed to either the dissolved organic matter or suspended solids that are present in the sample. This work suggests a modification of the standard azomethine-H method, in which the solution is digested with potassium persulfate prior to the standard procedure. We show that this pretreatment can overcome the color interference and lead to highly accurate and precise boron analyses in wastewater. In soil extracts, the boron concentrations obtained using the suggested procedure were better correlated to inductively coupled plasma (ICP) spectrometry results than those measured by the standard method, because whereas the standard method quantifies the free dissolved boron only, the modified method, like the ICP method, quantifies the total dissolved boron in the sample. Thus, the suggested modification can be used to quantify the respective distributions of free dissolved boron, boron adsorbed to dissolved organic matter and boron adsorbed to suspended solids in soil extracts and water samples.  相似文献

A mathematical model of hydrogen fluoride (HF) deposition and accumulation of fluoride in a Eucalyptus rostrata forest has been developed. The model is based on tree physiology and meteorological principles. The data base for the model was derived from a literature survey of the physiological characteristics of E. rostrata and similar eucalyptus species and from current knowledge of meteorological processes in plant canopies.Comparison of the mathematical simulations with measurements in the vicinity of a source of HF (an aluminium reduction plant) shows that (1) the pattern of seasonal fluoride accumulation in leaves agrees with that seen in the field, and (2) the vertical pattern of accumulation inside tree leaves agrees with field observations. The simulations indicate that 50% of the released HF was deposited within 81 km of the source and that the concentration of HF in the air 81 km from the source was reduced to 2% of the concentration 1 km from the source. However, a very large forest area (20 600 km2) was required to achieve these reductions.  相似文献

Trace metals (total mercury, cadmium and zinc) were studied in several tissues of the edible shrimps Pleoticus muelleri and Artemesia longinaris from the Bahía Blanca estuary, Argentina. The digestive gland was shown to be the main organ in which metals accumulate, followed by the stomach-alimentary canal and abdominal muscle.The metal contents found in the present study largely exceeded those of the same species caught from the Argentine Sea. Mercury concentrations increased proportionally to the total length of the shrimps studied. Only little variation in metal concentrations among individuals seemed to exist.Finally, the usefulness of these species as bioindicators of trace metal pollution in the Bahía Blanca estuary is discussed.  相似文献

In EU countries approximately 150,000 tons/year of galvanic sludges are generated by 4000 industrial units from the corresponding wastewater treatment plants. These sludges are generally classified as hazardous (European Waste Catalogue as adopted in Council Decision 2000/532/CE and as amended by Decisions 2001/118/EC, 2001/119/EC and 2001/573/CE), basically due to the presence of heavy metals. This work attempts to better understand the physical and chemical characteristics of these sludges, by studying 39 samples collected in different Portuguese industries that should represent all kinds of similar wastes independent of their place of generation. Chemical composition and leaching characteristics are given, together with density, grain size distribution, and specific surface area values. Statistical analysis was used for grouping the wastes according to chemical parameters, which might be useful to predict potential reuse as raw materials for different applications.  相似文献

The development and implementation of new procedures and operational changes in the production processes constitutes a powerful tool for the practical application of Cleaner Production in industries. In this work an operational change (new procedure) was developed for the elaboration of a type of beer which uses sugar as malt adjunct. The change consists in processing separately the three main components of the beer wort: malt extract, sugar and water, and use them properly in a different sequence than that used up to date in the traditional process. The new procedure was successfully assayed on industrial scale in Tínima brewery, located in Camagüey, Cuba, obtaining a good quality beer, technological and economical advantages with benefits for the environment, registering significant savings in energy (49%), sugar (4%), water (7%) and caustic soda (3%) consumption; and diminishing the surplus hot water (74%), waste generation (11%) and greenhouse gases emission (21%). Beer production capacity is increased also almost three times. With the application of the new technology to the Cuban beer type of 8 °P, it was achieved a total saving of US$ 481.83/1000 hL of beer produced.  相似文献

The habitats of La Mancha Lagoon, located midway along the coast of Veracruz, Mexico, are responding to the change of sediment supply reaching its primary inlet at the Gulf of Mexico. Until several decades ago, an abundant alongshore supply of sediment created a periodic opening and closing of the La Mancha inlet. The hydrologic regime of the lagoon consisted of raised water level and lower salinity during the closures, whereas the open inlet favored lower water level, higher salinity, and sediment accumulation in the flood tidal delta. Currently, diminished alongshore sediment supply has affected the inlet morphology and the discharge regime. Associated with the reduced sediment supply, the inlet is open longer in its periodic cycle, the water level variation is reduced, the salinity contrasts are reduced, and the rate of sedimentation in the flood-tide delta is increased. This combination of alterations to the inlet area is changing the flooding regime and affecting the conditions in a very well-developed mangrove habitat at the lagoon margins as well as conditions within the aqueous portions of the lagoon. Management options produce a conflict between supporting the direction of change or preserving the existing habitats.  相似文献

Modelling species distributions with presence data from atlases, museum collections and databases is challenging. In this paper, we compare seven procedures to generate pseudo-absence data, which in turn are used to generate GLM-logistic regressed models when reliable absence data are not available. We use pseudo-absences selected randomly or by means of presence-only methods (ENFA and MDE) to model the distribution of a threatened endemic Iberian moth species (Graellsia isabelae). The results show that the pseudo-absence selection method greatly influences the percentage of explained variability, the scores of the accuracy measures and, most importantly, the degree of constraint in the distribution estimated. As we extract pseudo-absences from environmental regions further from the optimum established by presence data, the models generated obtain better accuracy scores, and over-prediction increases. When variables other than environmental ones influence the distribution of the species (i.e., non-equilibrium state) and precise information on absences is non-existent, the random selection of pseudo-absences or their selection from environmental localities similar to those of species presence data generates the most constrained predictive distribution maps, because pseudo-absences can be located within environmentally suitable areas. This study shows that if we do not have reliable absence data, the method of pseudo-absence selection strongly conditions the obtained model, generating different model predictions in the gradient between potential and realized distributions.  相似文献
