The level of specialization of the entomopathogenic nematode Steinernema scapterisci with its native Xenorhabdus symbiont was investigated by testing (1) the influence of non-native bacterial strains on nematode fitness within an insect-host
(Galleria mellonella) and (2) specificity of the association between the nematode infective juveniles and non-native bacteria. All non-native
Xenorhabdus spp. or Photorhabdus spp. strains tested were mutualistically associated with other entomopathogenic nematodes in nature. We showed that most
of the Xenorhabdus spp. strains tested led to an insignificant difference of the nematode's fitness compared to the one obtained with the native
bacterium. Conversely, Photorhabdus spp. strains almost entirely abolished nematode reproduction. The phylogenetic analysis of bacterial strains tested, showed
that there was a negative correlation between S. scapterisci's reproduction rate with a bacterial strain and the genetic distance of this bacterial strain from the native one. We also
showed that the native bacterium was the only one which was transmitted by S. scapterisci's infective juveniles. All these results, suggested a specialization between S. scapterisci and its native Xenorhabdus. As the same phenomenon was already demonstrated in the association between S. carpocapsae and X. nematophila, specialization between partners would not be an exception in entomopathogenic nematode-bacteria interactions. Nevertheless,

This is a case study of contamination by a non-aqueous phase liquid (NAPL) that leaked from a chemical plant. The remediation procedure adopted for the initial phase of the plume migration was a plastic diaphragm wall coupled with a series of water extraction wells designed to avoid environmental impact on the surrounding ecosystems. Monitoring has shown that the containment is successful, and additional measures that contribute to accelerating remediation have been adopted. The authors wished to investigate how remediation might be further enhanced. The use of in situ aeration coupled with a system of soil vapor extraction (AS/SVE) has been chosen, since the remediation of sites with characteristics similar to those in this study, if based exclusively on dissolved-phase control, would take several decades to be completed. The transport of contaminant plumes has been simulated by using an analytical model to evaluate the effectiveness of the natural attenuation of the contaminant. The results of the simulation have confirmed the limited effectiveness of the natural attenuation of the contaminant, as well as the effective increase of remediation that would occur if the AS/SVE system is applied. A sensitivity analysis that included several combinations of increments of parameters that correspond to the decay rate of the source and the dissolved plume has simulated what might happen if the AS/SVE system is implemented. 相似文献

As a result of increasing global awareness about the importance of the environment, depletion of natural resources and legal pressures for companies to manage their processes in a sustainable manner, ISO 14001 systems have been gaining increasingly more importance in the organizational scenario. These elements are even more critical in emerging nations due to less awareness and fewer demands by governments and the population in relation to environmental issues. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to verify the benefits and difficulties of Environmental Management Systems based on ISO 14001 at industries in the state of São Paulo – Brazil (an emerging country) by conducting a survey to subsidize the proposal for actions in the public, academic and private sectors to promote the use of this standard of reference and strengthen its results in Brazil. A questionnaire was sent to 194 companies from the National Institute of Metrology, Standardization and Industrial Quality database. 69 answered, representing a return rate of 35.36%. The main benefits identified are related to the development of preventive environmental actions, reduction in the consumption of power, water, gas and fuel oil, and a positive influence on other internal management processes. The main difficulties are related to cost increases from ISO 14001 management systems and the constant changes in environmental legislation in Brazil. Some actions are proposed at the end of the analyses to intensify the use and improve the results of this standard, such as changes in government legislation and its collective development and implementation in industries. 相似文献

For males of socially polygynous avian species like the spotless starling, there may exist a trade-off between investing in
paternal care and controlling several nests. To determine how the intensity of paternal care affects reproductive success
per brood sired or expressed as the total number of young raised in all nests controlled by the same male, it is necessary
to manipulate paternal care. Testosterone (T) has been shown to depress the tendency for males to care for their young, and
induces them to acquire more mates. The effects of paternal care on reproductive success were studied by treating certain
male starlings with exogenous T and others with the antiandrogen cyproterone acetate (CA), and comparing the parental behavior
of T- and CA-males throughout the breeding season with that of controls. CA-males fed their chicks more during the first week
after hatching than T-males, with controls feeding at intermediate rates, both on a per nest basis and as total effort for
all nests controlled by the same male. Paternal feeding rates during the first week of chick life had a significant positive
effect on the number of fledged young. The hormone treatment significantly affected the number of chicks raised per nest,
CA-males having a higher breeding success per nest than T-males, and controls showing intermediate levels of success. There
was no significant effect of treatment on total reproductive success attained by males throughout the season. In the polygonous
spotless starling, the intensity of paternal care of young affects reproductive success per nest positively but not on a seasonal
basis.

To predict the coherence in local responses to large-scale climatic forcing among aquatic systems, we developed a generalized approach to compare long-term data of dimictic water bodies based on phenomenologically defined hydrographic events. These climate-sensitive phases (inverse stratification, spring overturn, early thermal stratification, summer stagnation) were classified in a dual code (cold/warm) based on threshold temperatures. Accounting for a latitudinal gradient in seasonal timing of phases derived from gradients in cumulative irradiation (2.2?days per degree latitude), we found a high spatial and temporal coherence in warm–cold patterns for six lakes (84?%) and the Baltic Sea (78?%), even when using the same thresholds for all sites. Similarity to CW-codes for the North Sea still was up to 72?%. The approach allows prediction of phase-specific warming trends and resulting instantaneous or time-delayed ecological responses. An Electrical Low Pressure Impactor (ELPI) was used during spring and autumn 2003 in the centre of Strasbourg for the measurement of atmospheric aerosols size distribution. The concentration of NO(x) and SO(2) in air was simultaneously measured with specific analysers. Samples were collected in the range 0.007-10 microm in equivalent aerodynamic diameter size. Number distributions are representative of a pollution originating from urban traffic with a particle size distribution exhibiting a nucleation mode below 29 nm and an accumulation mode around 80 nm in size. A mean particle density equal to 39000+/-35000 total particles per cm(3) with a size ranging from 7 to 10 microm was obtained after a sampling period of 2 weeks in spring. About 86.9% of the number of particles have an aerodynamic diameter below 0.1 microm and 13.1% between 0.1 and 1 microm. Correlation coefficients between the number of particles impacted on each ELPI plate and gas concentrations (SO(2) and NO(x)) showed that the numbers of particles with diameter between 0.10 and 0.62 microm are highly related to the NO(x) concentration. This result indicates that particles are traffic induced since NO(x) is mainly emitted by cars as shown by measurements on various sites. Particles are less clearly correlated to the SO(2) concentration. Particle analysis on different ELPI plates for a sampling period of 2 weeks in autumn showed high level of soluble NO(3)(-), SO(4)(2-) and NH(4)(+) ions. Indeed, up to 90% b.w. of these three species were found in the particle range 0.1-1 microm. In many bird species the cryptic winter plumage is due to the presence of light feather tips that conceal conspicuous colorations.
The gradual abrasion of these tips that makes sexual traits visible has been interpreted as a strategy to improve mating success
(here referred as the permanent exhibition hypothesis). However, under some circumstances, the maintenance of a full plumage
that facultatively enables the bird to exhibit or cover aggression-inducing traits has proved to be advantageous (the coverable
badge hypothesis). In a population of house sparrows where black throat patches (here called badges) are used in intrasexual
competition, the degree of abrasion of dull feather tips that conceal bright colour early in the breeding season correlated
neither with badge size nor with traits indicating morphology and body condition. These results are only in accordance with
predictions of the coverable badge hypothesis. In 1992 experimental clipping of badge feather tips, which forced permanent
exposure of badges, negatively affected birds with the largest badges in terms of nest acquisition, but an opposite trend
was indicated for birds with the smallest badges. In 1993, when more novel birds in the study area were competing for nesting
sites than in 1992, only badge size, but not the experimental manipulation, affected nesting success. These results suggest
that the loss of the ability to conceal badges was disadvantageous, and more so if most competing individuals had already
been resident in the colony in previous years and the larger their badges were. There is a striking contrast between the results
reported for this study population, where badges mainly signal fighting ability, and those reported for another house sparrow
population, where badges are mainly used in mate choice. In this last population, tip abrasion is advantageous for dominant
individuals showing the largest badges. This suggests that the trade-off between conserving versus wearing off the feathers
that conceal ornaments could have different optimal resolutions depending on the relative importance of inter and intrasexual
selection on indicator traits.
