The behavior of particulate matter (PM) during high-concentration episodes was investigated using monitoring data from Guui station, a comprehensive air monitoring station in Seoul, Korea, from January 2008 to March 2010. Five non-Asian dust (ND) episodes and two Asian dust (AD) episodes of high PM concentrations were selected for the study. During the ND episode, primary air pollutants accumulated due to low wind speeds, and PM2.5 increased along with most other air pollutants. Particles larger than PM2.5 were also high since these particles were generated by vehicular traffic rather than wind erosion. During strong AD episodes, PM10–2.5 primarily increased and gaseous primary air pollutants decreased under high wind speeds. However, even during the AD episode, PM2.5 and gaseous primary air pollutants increased when the effects of AD were weak and wind speeds were low. This study corroborates that accumulation of air pollutants due to a drop in surface wind speed plays an important role in short-term high-concentration occurrences. However, low wind speeds could not be directly linked to local emissions because a significant portion of accumulated air pollutants resulted from long-range transport.  相似文献

The concentrations and loadings of major and trace elements in coal mine drainage (CMD) from 49 abandoned mines located in the coal fields of the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina were determined. The CMD sites typically displayed a wide spatial and temporal variability in physical and geochemical conditions. The results of our CMD analyses in Santa Catarina State were used to illustrate that the geochemical processes in the rock piles can be deduced from multiple data sets. The observed relationship between the pH and constituent concentrations were attributed to (1) dilution of acidic water by near-neutral or alkaline groundwater and (2) solubility control of Al, Fe, Mn, Ba and Sr by hydroxide, sulfate, and/or carbonate minerals. The preliminary results of the CMD analyses and environmental health in the Santa Catarina region, Brazil, are discussed.  相似文献

Swine excreta were dried by boiling via immersion in hot oil. In this method, moisture in the excreta is replaced with oil or evaporated by turbulent heat transfer in high-temperature oil. The dried excreta can be used in an incinerator like low-rank coal or solid fuel. Refined waste oil and B–C heavy oil were used for drying. Drying for 8 min at 150 °C reduced the water content of raw excreta from 78.90 wt.% to 1.56 wt.% (refined waste oil) or 1.62 wt.% (B–C heavy oil) and that of digested excreta from 79.58 wt.% to 3.40 wt.% (refined waste oil) or 3.48 wt.% (B–C heavy oil). The low heating values of the raw and digested excreta were 422 kJ/kg and ?2,713 kJ/kg, respectively, before drying and 27,842–28,169 kJ/kg and 14,394–14,905 kJ/kg, respectively, after drying. A heavy metal analysis did not detect Hg, Pb, Cd, As, and Cr in the dried excreta, but Al, Cu, and Zn, which occur in the feed formula, were detected. Thermogravimetric analysis before and after drying revealed that emission of volatiles and combustion of volatiles and fixed carbon occurred at temperatures of 250–500 °C when air was used as the transfer gas.  相似文献

A sorption data base (SDB) provides readily available data for the performance assessment of a radwaste repository when site-specific and/or reference data are needed. The software developed at KAERI, SDB-21C, is a graphic user interface (GUI) program that provides efficient and user-friendly tools for evaluating large amount of sorption data. In addition, the most comprehensive sorption data base that contains about 11,000 NEA data and 2,000 KAERI data was compiled in the program. Besides the simple Kd approach, a parametric model and its compiled data sets are also included in the SDB-21C. In order to evaluate the versatility of SDB-21C, several applications were performed for relevant hypothetical situations.  相似文献

In spatially heterogeneous systems, utilizing population models to integrate the effects of multiple population rates can yield powerful insights into the relative importance of the component rates. The relative importance of demographic rates and dispersal in shaping the distribution of the western tussock moth (Orgyia vetusta) among patches of its host plant was explored using stage-structured population models. Tussock moth dispersal occurs passively in first-instar larvae and is poor or absent in all other life stages. Spatial surveys suggested, however, that moth distribution is not well explained by passive dispersal; moth populations were greater on small patches and on isolated ones. Further analysis showed that several local demographic rates varied significantly with patch characteristics. Two mortality factors in particular may explain the observed patterns. First, crawler mortality both increased with patch size and was density-dependent. A single-patch difference equation model showed mortality related to patch size is strong enough to overcome the homogenizing effect of density dependence; greater equilibrium densities were predicted for smaller patches. Second, although three rates were found to vary with local patch density, only pupal parasitism by a chalcid wasp could potentially account for higher moth abundances on isolated patches. A spatially explicit simulation model of the multiple-patch system showed that spatial variation in pupal parasitism is indeed strong enough to generate such a pattern. These results demonstrate that habitat spatial structure can affect multiple population processes simultaneously, and even relatively low attack rates imposed on a reproductively valuable life stage of the host can have a dominant effect on population distribution among habitat patches.  相似文献

The decomposition of sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS) in water by means of ultrasound irradiation at 20kHz was investigated. Experiments were conducted at surfactant concentrations of 175, 260 and 350 mg l(-1), liquid volumes of 120, 170 and 220 ml, temperatures of 20, 30 and 45 degrees C and applied power of 40, 80 and 125 W. The extent of degradation was followed monitoring substrate and organic carbon concentrations, while hydrogen peroxide concentration was also measured; the latter is a product of water sonolysis due to hydroxyl radical recombination. 80% SDBS conversion was achieved after 120 min of sonication at 125 W and 30 degrees C; nonetheless, SDBS and its degradation intermediates proved difficult to oxidise as only about 20-25% of the initial carbon content was transformed to carbon dioxide. At the initial stages of the reaction, degradation rate appears to be only weakly dependent on the substrate concentration with the rate increasing from 3.1 to 4 mg l(-1)min(-1) with increasing concentration from 175 to 350 mg l(-1). Degradation appears to occur at the bubble-liquid interface through hydroxyl radical-mediated reactions whose role was established by performing experiments in the presence of radical scavengers, namely potassium bromide and sodium benzoate. Degradation rates increased with increasing power and decreasing temperature and volume.  相似文献
