Stimulation of photosynthate excretion from zooxanthellae and free-living algae by tissue homogenate of several bivalves was studied. Mantle tissue homogenate of Tridacna derasa enhanced 10-to 15-fold excretion of photosynthetically fixed carbon from freshly isolated zooxanthellae within 2 h incubation. Maximum carbon excretion was 35 to 45% of the total carbon fixed. This excretion stimulating activity was detected in the homogenates of the mantle, adductor muscle, gill, and kidney. However, no excretion stimulating activity was detected in the haemolymph. The excretion stimulation activity of mantle homogenate, directed against freshly isolated zooxanthellae from T. derasa, was higher in bivalves belonging to the Tridacnidae (T. derasa, T. crocea, T. maxima, T. squamosa, Hippopus hippopus) than in the Cardiidae (Fragum fragum, F. mundum, F. unedo), non-symbiotic bivalves (Mytilus edulis, Meretrix lusoria, Ruditapes philippinarum) or gastropods (Umbonium giganteum, Turbo argyrostoma). The mantle homogenate of T. derasa enhanced photosynthate excretion by free-living algae belonging to the Dinophyceae (Prorocentrum micans, Amphidinium carterae, and Heterocapsa triquetra) but did not enhance its excretion by free-living algae belonging to the Chlorophyceae, Cyanophyceae, Rhodophyceae, Prasinophyceae, and Haptophyceae. T. derase used in this study originated from Belau (Palau). T. crocea, T. squamosa, T. maxima, H. hippopus and F. unedo were collected at Ishigaki Island in Okinawa in 1992. F. mundum and F. fragm were collected at Okinawa Island in 1992.  相似文献

Shell preferences were examined inPagurus longicarpus Say, collected from Wakulla Beach, Florida, USA in 1987. Relative shell size was a more important shell characteristic in shell selection than either shell species or shell damage. Hermit crabs rarely selected relatively large shells but often selected relatively small shells over damaged shells. Preferences for a particular shell species were offset by varying the relative size or condition of the preferred shell species. Because specific environmental pressures are linked to particular shell characteristics, an assessment of the importance of various shell features may indicate which environmental pressures are ameliorated via the gastropod shell. Predation and desiccation are linked to relatively small shells and particular shell species; these stresses may be minimized by alternative behavioral mechanisms.  相似文献

Summary The Japanese calopterygid damselfly Mnais pruinosa pruinosa shows three distinct copulation durations (Siva-Jothy and Tsubaki 1989). A variety of factors which might influence copulation duration were investigated. Results indicate that the temperature in the vicinity of copulating pairs, the rate at which males encountered receptive females, territory quality, the rate of agonistic interactions between males, female gravidity and female willingness to oviposit have no effect on copulation duration. The most significant factor was the location of the site at which males captured their mates. We suggest that under natural conditions the location of the capture site provides males with reliable, indirect information about a female's intention to oviposit: it is important for males of this species to acquire such information since sperm precedence, and therefore reproductive success, is in part dependant on the interval experienced by females between copulation and subsequent oviposition. The results are discussed and it is suggested that the three observed mate-securing tactics of M.p. pruinosa are facultative and information-dependant.  相似文献

Seabirds were systematically censused during more than 6 000 transect counts from research vessels in the North Pacific Ocean and Bering Sea during the summers of 1975 to 1984. Density indices were calculated for 1o latitude-longitude blocks for 71 species. Blocks were assigned to oceanographic regions (current systems and domains) on the bases of geography, sea surface temperature and salinity. Bird abundances across regions were patchy; concentrations occurred at boundaries. Regional avifaunas overlapped as a function of three factors: similarity of water-types, geographic adjacency, and proximity to nesting areas. Four major avifaunas were apparent: the Bering Sea (and adjacent regions), the Subarctic Current System/Transition Domain (and adjacent regions), Upwelling Domain, and North Pacific Central Water. The subarctic boundary sharply separated different avifaunas. Ocean productivity may be the factor that ultimately affects avifaunal composition.  相似文献

Bacterial productivity in sandy sediments on reef flats at Lizard Island, Great Barrier Reef was determined from the rate of incorporation of tritiated thymidine into DNA. The study was conducted during January 1982 and July 1983. A small diurnal increase occurred in sediments having a dense population of microalgae. Bacterial production was 120 to 370 mg C m-2 d-1 in summer on reef flats, which was equivalent to 30–40% of primary production by benthic microalgae. In winter, rates of primary production by benthic microalgae and secondary production by bacteria were about one-half to one-fifth of those in summer. There was much variation in production, due to patchiness in the distribution of benthic microbes, especially microalgae. Doubling times for the bacteria in surface sediment were 1 to 2 d in summer and 4 to 16 d in winter on the reef flats. These high productivity values for bacteria indicated that a net input of organic matter to the sediment was needed to support the growth of bacteria. Sediment bacteria thus have a very important role in transforming organic matter on the reef flats. Grazing by Holothuria atra depressed both primary production and bacterial production. It was estimated that these holothurians ate about 10 to 40% of bacterial carbon produced each day in summer, and thus have an important role in the carbon cycle. Harpacticoid copepods were numerically important components of the benthic meiofaunal community and probably had a significant impact on bacterial density as grazers.  相似文献

Previous work by Atkinson and Lewis (J. Environ. Econ. Manag.1, 237–250 (1974)) and Anderson et al. (“An Analysis of Alternative Policies for Attaining and Maintaining a Short-Term NO2 Standard,” MATHTECH, Inc., Princeton, N.J., 1979) has indicated the tremendous cost advantages to be achieved by moving from a policy based on emission standards to one based on marketable emission permits. As Tietenberg (Land Econ.56, 391–416 (1980)) points out, however, neither of the major permit designs treated in the literature are optimal from all points of view. This has triggered a search for alternative permit designs, which, while they may not minimize compliance costs, have sufficient other virtues as to make them attractive on other grounds. The purpose of this paper is to examine, within the context of an empirical mathematical programming model, the air quality, emission, and cost consequences of two classes of the permit designs which can be implemented in the absence of information on control costs. During cadmium uptake by the shore crab Carcinus maenas (L.), cadmium appears in both haemolymph and urine within 1 h, and comes into equilibrium with the haemolymp after some 60 h. The equilibrium concentration for haemolymph cadmium is always considerably less than that of the external medium, whether the latter is close to background level or at the artificially high concentration of 2.2 mg l-1. Despite earlier evidence that cadmium entering the haemolymph is mainly bound to protein, current results show most of this to be freely labile and quickly displaced by cadmium taken up subsequently. There is some evidence to suggest that cadmium is passed on from the haemolymph to the hepatopancreas. A large proportion of whole-body cadmium is adsorbed onto the exoskeleton and gills. The comparatively rapid efflux of 109Cd from loaded crabs over a period of 1 week is mainly due to desorption of this cadmium from the outer body surface.  相似文献

Surface nannoplankton and netplankton photosynthetic rates and chlorophyll a concentrations were measured 3 h before and 3 h after local apparent noon at 36 stations in the eastern Pacific. Morning and afternoon nannoplankton and netplankton photosynthetic capacities were plotted against chlorophyll a concentrations. Comparison of am (morning) and pm (afternoon) regression coefficients revealed that neither netplankton nor nannoplankton photosynthetic efficiencies varied diurnally in temperate California Current waters. However, in oligotrophic tropical surface waters where the photosynthetic rates of both fractions were nitrogen limited, netplankton assimilation ratios exhibited an afternoon maximum, while nannoplankton efficiencies exhibited a morning maximum. The netplankton followed the same pattern in eutrophic tropical surface waters with high nitrate concentrations, but nannoplankton assimilation ratios were highest in the afternoon. Assuming that midday light intensities inhibit surface photosynthesis, it was concluded that assimilation ratios will reach a mid-morning or mid-afternoon maximum depending upon the relative importance of netplankton and nannoplankton productivity and the degree to which nutrients are limiting.  相似文献

Most spionid polychaetes switch from deposit feeding to suspension feeding as current speed and the flux of suspended food increase. Growth rates of juvenile Polydora cornuta are strongly affected by flow and can be as rapid as 60% day−1 in moderate currents. Feeding palps that extend above the sediment–water interface during suspension feeding are especially vulnerable to sublethal predation, but individuals with damaged posteriors are also common. We performed a series of laboratory flume experiments to test the effects of sublethal tissue damage on the growth and regeneration rates of P. cornuta juveniles. Replicated experiments were conducted at three flow speeds in counter-rotating annular flumes containing field-collected sediment and a nonliving algal slurry as deposited and suspended food. In the first set of experiments, we removed 2, 1, or 0 of worms’ two feeding palps and measured the relative growth rates of worm bodies and palps after 3 days in the flumes. Worms that lost both palps grew significantly slower than the other two groups, but the growth rate of worms that had one undamaged palp was not significantly different from worms that had two undamaged palps. Faster flow speeds significantly increased rates of body growth, and there was a significant interaction between flow and the effect of palp loss. During the 3-day experiments, damaged palps fully regenerated and often grew larger than they were prior to being removed. Damaged palps also grew significantly faster than undamaged palps. The second set of experiments tested the effects of removing a worm’s posterior region (~18% of body volume). The growth rates of these damaged and undamaged worms did not differ significantly. By the end of a 3-day flume experiment, damaged worms had grown 6× larger than they were prior to the posterior damage. The rapid regeneration of damaged palps and posterior tissue in moderate flows that allow suspension feeding suggests that sublethal predation on spionids might be more frequent than previously estimated and will have little impact on the growth of juvenile recruits.  相似文献

Ecklonia radiata (C. Ag.) J. Agardh is a common macroalga on reefs in the warm-temperate parts of the southern hemisphere. It is a dominant habitat-former and as such has a strong structuring effect on associated algal assemblages. Morphological variation in E. radiata potentially affects its interactions with the surroundings and contributes to confusion about its taxonomy. We quantified the magnitude of morphological variation in fully developed E. radiata sporophytes across Australasia and tested the hypotheses that E. radiata has different morphology at different locations and that the degree of morphological difference depends on spatial distances among locations. A total of 11 morphological characters were sampled from 11 locations along the Australian coastline from Kalbarri in Western Australia to Sydney in New South Wales as well as from Doubtful Sound, New Zealand. Most morphological characters varied considerably from one location to another. For example, the average (±SE) thallus length was 135.2±12.5 cm in Kalbarri and only 69.7±5.5 cm in Sydney. There were no consistent spatial patterns of variation among individual morphological characters, and, generally, variations among individual characters were poorly correlated (-0.5< R<0.5). This suggests that individual morphological characters develop independently of each other in response to processes operating at different spatial scales. Multivariate measures of morphology were found to be different among some locations and similar among others (-0.37=Clarke's  R=1), but there was no correlation (Spearman's R=0.08) between morphological similarity and distance between locations. Consequently, our results do not support clinal variation in E. radiata morphology. Rather, they suggest the presence of discrete morphologically different populations, in which the morphology at any one location reflects multiple forcing factors operating on different morphological characters at different spatial scales.  相似文献
