Spatial distributions of the leaf area index (LAI) needed for carbon cycle modeling in Xingguo County, China were estimated based on correlations between the field-measurements and vegetation indices (VIs). After making geometric and atmospheric corrections to two Landsat ETM+ images, one in January 2000 and the other in May 2003, three VIs (SR, NDVI, and RSR) were derived, and their separate correlations with ground LAI measurements were established. The correlation with RSR was the highest among the three VIs. The retrieved LAI values for January 2000 were lower than those for May 2003 because of a small seasonal variation in the coniferous forests (predominantly masson pine) and the decrease in the understorey vegetation during winter. 相似文献

Due to the increase in energy cost by constantly high oil prices and the obligation to reduce greenhouse effect gases, landfill gas is frequently used as an alternative energy source for producing heat and electricity. Most of landfill gas utility facilities, however, are experiencing problems controlling siloxanes from landfill gas as their catalytic oxidizers are becoming fouled by silicon dioxide dust. To evaluate adsorption characteristics of siloxanes, an adsorption equilibrium test was conducted and parameters in the Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms were analyzed. Coconut activated carbon (CA1), coal activated carbon (CA2), impregnated activated carbon (CA3), silicagel (NCA1), and activated alumina (NCA2) were used for the adsorption of the mixed siloxane which contained hexamethyldisiloxane (L2), octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4), and decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5). L2 had higher removal efficiency in noncarbon adsorbents compared to carbon adsorbents. The application of Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm demonstrated that coconut based CA1 and CA3 provided higher adsorption capacity on L2. And CA2 and NCA1 provided higher adsorption capacity on D4 and D5. Based on the experimental results, L2, D4, and D5 were converted by adsorption and desorption in noncarbon adsorbents. We focused on groundwater denitrification capacity, water table dynamics, and the presence and pattern of organically enriched deposits. We used the push-pull method (measurement of 15N-enriched denitrification gases derived from an introduced groundwater plume of 15N-enriched nitrate) to evaluate groundwater denitrification capacity on nine forested wetland riparian sites developed in alluvial or outwash parent materials in southern New England. Three replicate sites were located in each of the three watershed types, those with substantial (1) irrigated agriculture, (2) suburban development, and (3) forest. Soil morphology and water table dynamics were assessed at each site. We found significantly lower mean annual water tables at sites within watersheds with substantial irrigated agriculture or suburban development than forested watersheds. Water table dynamics were more variable at sites within suburban watersheds, especially during the summer. Groundwater denitrification capacity was significantly greater at sites within forested watersheds than in watersheds with substantial irrigated agriculture. Because of the high degree of variability observed in riparian sites within suburban watersheds, groundwater denitrification capacity was not significantly different from either forested or agricultural watersheds. The highly variable patterns of organically enriched deposits and water tables at sites within suburban watersheds suggests that depositional events are irregular, limiting the predictability of groundwater N dynamics in these riparian zones. The variability of riparian N removal in watersheds with extensive suburbia or irrigated agriculture argues for N management strategies emphasizing effective N source controls in these settings. 相似文献

Phytoremediation is an emerging technique that can be used to economically remediate sites contaminated with trace elements and/or man‐made organic contaminants. This technique was used on Pearl Harbor (Oahu, Hawaii) dredged material (PHDM) containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and some heavy metals. The dredged material was first amended with a high‐calcium soil (Waialua Mollisol) and a biosolids‐based compost at different proportions to yield varying salinity levels. A mixture that yielded an electrical conductivity (EC, a measure of salinity) of the saturated paste extract of 15 to 20 dS/m was identified and used to evaluate the salt tolerance of five plant species. Relative germination and one‐month‐old biomass indicated that common bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon), seashore paspalum (Paspalum vaginatum), beach pea (Vigna marina), and cow pea (Vigna unguiculata) can produce at least 40 percent of biomass of the control at an EC of approximately 18 dS/m, suggesting the four plants are relatively salt tolerant. In contrast, Desmodium intortum either did not germinate or died within two weeks after germination at the same salinity level. A subsequent greenhouse experiment, using mixtures of the PHDM (0 or 25 percent dry weight), organic amendments (10 percent leucaena green manure or biosolids‐based compost), and a Mollisol (65 or 90 percent dry weight) in 6‐liter pots containing 4 kilograms of material yielded the following results: (1) A combination of transplanted seashore paspalum, seeded bermuda grass, and seeded beach pea was effective in taking up sodium (Na), thereby reducing salinity and making the medium more amenable to diversified microbes and plants, which may be effective PAH degraders; (2) total PAH concentration was reduced by about 30 percent after three months of active plant growth, but degradation of individual PAH members varied significantly, however; (3) leguminous green manure, as a soil amendment, was more effective than compost for use in bio‐ and/or phytoremediations; and (4) soil amendments, when applicable, could supplement living plants in reducing organic contaminants, such as PAHs. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 相似文献

Size-resolved aerosols were continuously collected by a Nano Sampler for 13 days at an urban site in Beijing during winter 2012 to measure the chemical composition of ambient aerosol particles. Data collected by the Nano Sampler and an ACSM(Aerodyne Aerosol Chemical Speciation Monitor) were compared. Between the data sets,similar trends and strong correlations were observed,demonstrating the validity of the Nano Sampler. PM10 and PM2.5concentrations during the measurement were 150.5 ± 96.0 μg/m3(mean ± standard variation)and 106.9 ± 71.6 μg/m3,respectively. The PM2.5/PM10 ratio was 0.70 ± 0.10,indicating that PM2.5dominated PM10. The aerosol size distributions showed that three size bins of 0.5–1,1–2.5 and 2.5–10 μm contributed 21.8%,23.3% and 26.0% to the total mass concentration(TMC),respectively. OM(organic matter) and SIA(secondary ionic aerosol,mainly SO42-,NO3-and NH4+) were major components of PM2.5. Secondary compounds(SIA and secondary organic carbon) accounted for half of TMC(about 49.8%) in PM2.5,and suggested that secondary aerosols significantly contributed to the serious particulate matter pollution observed in winter. Coal burning,biomass combustion,vehicle emissions and SIA were found to be the main sources of PM2.5. Mass concentrations of water-soluble ions and undetected materials,as well as their fractions in TMC,strikingly increased with deteriorating particle pollution conditions,while OM and EC(elemental carbon) exhibited different variations,with mass concentrations slightly increasing but fractions in TMC decreasing. 相似文献
