A range of invertebrates have become adapted to certain toxic metals, such that, in the presence of the contaminant, some measure of their performance, typically growth or reproduction, is superior to that of an unexposed population. Under such a toxic stress, a population with a history of exposure might outperform a na?ve population in competition for limited resources. This study compared the shell growth of laboratory-bred juveniles from six populations of Helix aspersa with different histories of exposure to Pb. In 10 trials using various combinations of two populations, the snails competed for a limited supply of food that contained either no Pb or 500 micrograms/g-1 Pb, for 98 days. Each trial consisted of 10 juveniles, five from each population and was replicated four times. Nearly all of the food provided was consumed quickly after presentation. The total amount of shell growth within each replicate (the sum of the mean growth of the two populations) was highly consistent between trials so that the total amount of shell built was limited by food availability. The presence of Pb in the diet caused no measurable depression of shell growth and exposure history did not appear to confer any competitive advantage or disadvantage in any of the trials. One population consistently grew faster than its competitors in every trial of which it was a part. Shell growth tended to be greater in smaller juveniles. Snail activity is known to be inhibited at high densities and this may have contributed to the lower incremental growth in individuals kept at the higher densities. Endoreduplication, the replication of the genome without mitosis, leads to endopolyploidy, an increase in cellular chromosome number. Although endoreduplication is widespread among angiosperms and other groups of eukaryotes, the degree to which this process is plastic under varying environmental conditions and its potential adaptive significance are not known. Here, using flow cytometry, we measured plasticity in chromosome number following the removal of apical dominance (simulating natural herbivory) in two ecotypes of Arabidopsis thaliana: Columbia and Landsberg erecta. We report that endopolyploidy of clipped Columbia plants was significantly different than unclipped controls following the removal of apical dominance and regrowth, and that cellular ploidy is positively associated with attributes of fitness (biomass, flower, fruit, and seed production). In contrast, clipped Landsberg erecta showed no significant differences in endopolyploidy and a decrease in seed production compared to unclipped controls; representing a significant genotype x environment interaction between ecotypes. Altering ploidy via endoreduplication adds a previously unknown way in which plants may be able to cope with environmental stress: enhancing regrowth rates and fitness following plant damage. 相似文献

Marine protected areas (MPAs) provide an important tool for conservation of marine ecosystems. To be most effective, these areas should be strategically located in a manner that supports ecosystem function. To inform marine spatial planning and support strategic establishment of MPAs within the California Current System, we identified areas predicted to support multispecies aggregations of seabirds ("hotspots"). We developed habitat-association models for 16 species using information from at-sea observations collected over an 11-year period (1997-2008), bathymetric data, and remotely sensed oceanographic data for an area from north of Vancouver Island, Canada, to the USA/Mexico border and seaward 600 km from the coast. This approach enabled us to predict distribution and abundance of seabirds even in areas of few or no surveys. We developed single-species predictive models using a machine-learning algorithm: bagged decision trees. Single-species predictions were then combined to identify potential hotspots of seabird aggregation, using three criteria: (1) overall abundance among species, (2) importance of specific areas ("core areas") to individual species, and (3) predicted persistence of hotspots across years. Model predictions were applied to the entire California Current for four seasons (represented by February, May, July, and October) in each of 11 years. Overall, bathymetric variables were often important predictive variables, whereas oceanographic variables derived from remotely sensed data were generally less important. Predicted hotspots often aligned with currently protected areas (e.g., National Marine Sanctuaries), but we also identified potential hotspots in Northern California/Southern Oregon (from Cape Mendocino to Heceta Bank), Southern California (adjacent to the Channel Islands), and adjacent to Vancouver Island, British Columbia, that are not currently included in protected areas. Prioritization and identification of multispecies hotspots will depend on which group of species is of highest management priority. Modeling hotspots at a broad spatial scale can contribute to MPA site selection, particularly if complemented by fine-scale information for focal areas. 相似文献

The implementation and maintenance of an air pollution monitoring program can be expensive and time consuming, especially when the aim is for long-term monitoring over a significant area. Consequently, it is essential that sites are optimized to provide the best representative cover while minimizing costs. In the past, there has been a tendency to locate sampling stations at pollution hot-spots. While this is acceptable for determining a maximum potential exposure or identifying the extent of a risk, there are limitations to this approach when assessing the potential impact of any future abatement strategies or determining the level of exposure outside the vicinity. This paper presents an approach in which representative air quality assessments can be undertaken for an urban area using the minimum number of measurement sites. A novel methodology is described that involves site selection to capture the maximum variance in measured pollutants, while minimizing spatiotemporal autocorrelation between the selected sites. A case study is presented for Yazd, Iran. Overall, the results show that the proposed methodology can be effective and enable the long-term monitoring of air pollution to be undertaken on a cost-effective basis in urban areas. Pocillopora damicornis (Linnaeus) were collected from Enewetak Atoll, Marshall Islands, in 1980–1981) and Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, in 1982. Their planula larvae contained 17% protein, 70% lipid, and 13% carbohydrate by dry weight. Calculations based on stored energy reserves and daily metabolic expenditure indicate that planulae could survive approximately 100 d and still settle successfully. Competency experiments demonstrated that larvae settled and metamorphosed after 103 d. This period of time is sufficient to allow immigration of larvae from the Central Pacific to the eastern Pacific, and supports the hypothesis of long-distance dispersal of larvae for the origin of present eastern Pacific populations of P. damicornis. 相似文献

Virgin female cabbage butterflies, Pieris rapae crucivora, accept and mate with courting males, whereas mated females reject them and assume the “mate refusal posture”. This study
tested whether the biogenic amines, serotonin (5HT), dopamine (DA), and octopamine (OA), were responsible for this change
in behavior. The results showed that 2–3-day-old virgin females fed with 5HT rejected courting males significantly more frequently
compared with controls fed on sucrose. In contrast, the proportions of courting males rejected by virgin females fed with
either DA or OA did not differ from sucrose-fed controls. Oral application of each amine resulted in significantly increased
levels of the amine applied (or its metabolite) in the brain. The results strongly suggest that 5HT or a 5HT metabolite may
be responsible for the post-mating change in behavioral response of 2–3-day-old virgin females to courting males. Similar
effects of 5HT treatment were observed in 6–8-day-old virgin females, but in this case the results were only marginally different
