Fluence rate (FR) distribution (optical field) is of great significance in the optimal design of ultraviolet (UV) reactors for disinfection or oxidation processes in water treatment. Since the 1970s, various simulation models have been developed, which can be combined with computational fluidic dynamic software to calculate the fluence delivered in a UV reactor. These models strive for experimental validation and further improvement, which is a major challenge for UV technology in water treatment. Herein, a review of the simulation models of the FR distribution in a UV reactor and the applications of the current main experimental measurement approaches including conventional flat-type UV detector, spherical actinometer, and micro-fluorescent silica detector (MFSD), is presented. Moreover, FR distributions in a UV reactor are compared between various simulation models and MFSD measurements. In addition, the main influential factors on the FR distribution, including inner-wall reflection, refraction and shadowing effects of adjacent lamps, and turbidity effect are discussed, which is helpful for improving the accuracy of the simulation models and avoiding dark regions in the reactor design. This paper provides an overview on the simulation models and measurement approaches for the FR distribution, which is helpful for the model selection in fluence calculations and gives high confidence on the optimal design of UV reactors in regard to present methods.  相似文献

The temperature tolerances in culture of Ecklonia maxima (Osbeck) Papenf., the dominant kelp in the Benguela upwelling region on the west coast of southern Africa, and the smaller E. biruncinata (Bory) Papenf., growing on the warmer south coast, have been investigated. Vegetative growth and reproduction of gametophytes show very similar patterns in the two species, although temperature optima in E. biruncinata are consistently 2 ° to 3 °C higher than those of E. maxima. Reciprocal crosses between clonal female and male gametophytes of the two species produced healthy juvenile sporophytes, indistinguishable from the parent crosses. All parents and hybrids grew well over a wide range of temperatures (8 ° to 22°C), with E. biruncinata sporophytes again having slightly higher optima than E. maxima. Both reciprocal crosses exhibited optima intermediate between the parent crosses. The results are discussed with respect to the origins and evolution of Ecklonia species in the region.  相似文献

The effect of light intensity and oxygen concentration on the growth of an estuarine diatom was investigated. Differences between rates of cell division and net carbon fixation were found to be dependent upon light intensity and oxygen concentration. Under conditions favoring large differences between cell division and net carbon fixation cultures of Thalassiosira pseudonana clone 3H depart from exponential and enter stationary phase at low cell concentrations. It is suggested that single cell algae may not be able to balance maintenance, growth, and division outside a fairly narrow range of environmental conditions.  相似文献

Survey techniques such as contingent valuation and opinion polls are used to develop an understanding of consumer preferences for the environment in the context of environmental decision-making. However, the exposure of weaknesses in such methods has led researchers to look to other information-gathering approaches which might enhance, complement or replace survey-based approaches. One such approach is that of the citizens' jury. A citizens' jury consists of a small group of people, selected to represent the general public rather than any interest-group or sector, which meets to deliberate upon a policy question. The paper critically evaluates the role that the citizens' jury might play in aiding environmental decision-making. Two case studies are reported where the citizens' jury process is used: first, to make recommendations on rural environmental projects in the Borders Region of Scotland; and, secondly, on meeting air quality targets in Edinburgh, Scotland. The paper concludes with recommendations on how the citizens' jury might complement other methods of environmental decision support and indicates the role that citizens' juries may play in future environmental and rural decision-making.  相似文献

Rhodamine WT (RWT) is an adsorptive flourescent dye tracer that is used in hydrological and hydrogeological studies. Municipal biosolids (sewage) are rich in organic matter and have a variety of chemical constituents that can interact to confound optical sensing of RWT florescence in water (e.g., quenching, interference, adsorption). Laboratory studies were conducted to evaluate optical sensing constraints associated with quantifying known RWT concentrations in a suite of RWT-spiked distilled water/liquid municipal biosolid (LMB) mixes. RWT flourescence decreased with an increase in LMB total suspended solids (TSS) in decay function form (R 2?=?0.98). A method was then described to correct the undersensed RWT readings based on knowledge of TSS and/or turbidity. This study also found that, for samples agitated by stirring, RWT readings increased in logarithmic form over time. In addition, sample agitation augmented the undersensing of known RWT concentrations, but when agitation ceased, optical readings immediately approached more closely the known RWT values. Studies that use RWT as a tracer to assess the fate and transport of biosolid impacted water in hydrological environments should be aware of some of the optical sensing limitations identified here.  相似文献

Although contingent valuation is widely discussed in the literature as a technique for environmental valuation, it is well recognized that a number of problems are associated with its use. This paper seeks to address two of these problems: the difficulty of externally verifying the results of a CV study; and the choice of an appropriate level of information to provide to respondents. Four sites were evaluated, first by expert ecologists and then by the general public using the CV method. In conducting the CV, six different categories of information were presented to different groups of respondents to test which was most appropriate.The results show that, given an information set consisting of photographic,textual and ecological data, respondents to a CV study were able to rank the four sites in the same order as ecological experts. This may be seen as a form of external verification to the results of the contingent valuation.  相似文献

The occurrence of male pregnancy in the family Syngnathidae (seahorses, pipefishes, and sea dragons) provides an exceptionally fertile system in which to investigate issues related to the evolution of parental care. Here, we take advantage of this unique reproductive system to study the influence of maternal body size on embryo survivorship in the brood pouches of pregnant males of the broad-nosed pipefish, Syngnathus typhle. Males were mated with either two large females, two small females, a large then a small female, or a small then a large female. Our results show that offspring survivorship depends on an interaction between female body size and the number of eggs transferred by the female. Eggs of larger females deposited in large numbers are more likely to result in viable offspring than eggs of smaller females laid in large numbers. However, when females deposited smaller numbers of eggs, the eggs from smaller females were more likely to produce viable offspring compared to those from larger females. We found no evidence that this result was based on mating order, the relative sizes of competing females, or egg characteristics such as dry weight of eggs. Additionally, male body size did not significantly influence the survivorship of offspring during brooding. Our results suggest that the factors underlying offspring survivorship in pipefish may be more complex than previously believed, with multiple factors interacting to determine the fitness of individual offspring within the broods of pregnant males.  相似文献

How central-place foragers change search strategy in response to environmental conditions is poorly known. Foragers may vary the total distance travelled and how far they range from the central place in response to variation in the distribution of their prey. One potential reason as to why they would extend the length of their foraging trip and its distance from the colony would be to increase prey quality or quantity, despite incurring higher transit costs. To test this trade-off hypothesis in a species with high flight costs, we recorded the foraging behaviour of razorbills (Alca torca) using state-of-the-art techniques that log both individual horizontal (flight activity) and vertical (dive activity) movements. We show that the distance that razorbills travelled to foraging locations increased with sea-surface temperature, which may relate to higher prey quality or quantity. This relation is supported by an indirect index of patch quality, based on dive profiles, which also increased with travel distance from the colony. Furthermore, we show that this index was highest during the daily peak in diving activity, around midday. Taken together, these results suggest that razorbills are capable of adjusting their search strategies sensitively in response to proximate environmental cues.  相似文献

While seabird conservation efforts have largely focused on protection from threats at the colony (e.g. reducing disturbance and predation), attention is increasingly being given to implementing protection measures for foraging areas at sea. For this to be effective, important foraging areas must be identified. Although numerous studies have examined seabird foraging behaviour, information is still lacking on the variability in area utilisation within and among breeding seasons. GPS devices were attached to adult black-legged kittiwakes breeding at an expanding North Sea colony (55°20′N, 1°32′W) during both incubation and chick-rearing in 2012 and during chick-rearing in 2011, to determine whether foraging areas remained consistent and to identify the oceanographic characteristics of areas used for foraging. The type and size of prey items consumed at different stages of the breeding cycle was also examined. During incubation (April–May 2012), kittiwakes foraged substantially further from the colony and fed on larger sandeels than when feeding chicks, and there was significant inter-annual variation in foraging areas used during the chick-rearing period (June–July 2011 and 2012). Foraging areas were characterised by cooler sea surface temperatures and areas of high chlorophyll a concentration, although association with specific oceanographic features changed within the breeding season and between years. These results emphasise the importance of considering how foraging areas and reliance on specific oceanographic conditions change over time when seeking to identify important marine areas for seabirds.  相似文献
