Over-stabilisation and eutrophication affect many dune systems in north-west Europe. This leads to lower diversity of typical
dune species and an accumulation of soil nutrients. Existing management techniques to remove excess nutrients include mowing,
with removal of cuttings, and turf stripping. A new restoration technique called topsoil inversion or deep ploughing may also
be able to counter some of the negative effects of eutrophication. It simulates the burial of established soils with fresh
mineral sand, by inverting the soil profile. A trial was carried out on two small blocks of eutrophic dune grassland in North
Wales, UK. Nutrient-rich surface soils were buried beneath mineral sub-sand using a double-bladed plough, designed to plough
to depths of up to 100 cm. Results show that the organic soil horizons were buried to a depth of 80 cm, and covered with 40–50 cm
of mineral sand. The pH and organic matter of the surface layers became comparable to those of mobile dunes. Fifteen months
after ploughing, bare sand cover was still 70–90%, but significant sand loss through wind erosion resulted in a thinning of
the mineral sand over-burden, leaving the buried organic layer closer to the surface. Natural vegetation colonisation was
slow, with the first surviving plants observed after 8 months. The majority of species present at 15 months were present before
ploughing and had regenerated from rhizomes or root fragments. The effect of excluding disturbance caused by rabbits, people
and dogs was assessed within fenced areas. After 11 months, vegetation cover was greater in the fenced areas than in plots
exposed to disturbance, therefore disturbance replaced physical conditions as the dominant influence on plant growth and establishment.
These early results suggest the trial has been partially successful, but that topsoil inversion could be combined with other
methods such as turf stripping or by stabilisation of the ploughed surface by planting with pioneer species, depending on

Background, aim, and scope
Hexane, a representative VOC, is used as a solvent for extraction and as an ingredient in gasoline. The degradation of hexane by bacteria is relatively slow due to its low solubility. Moreover, the biodegradation pathway of hexane under aerobic conditions remains to be investigated; therefore, a study relating to aerobic biodegradation mechanisms is required. Consequently, in this study, an effective hexane degrader was isolated and the biodegradation pathway examined for the first time. Due to the prohibition of food waste landfilling in Korea from 2005 and the subsequent ban on the marine disposal of organic sludge, including leachate generated from food waste recycling facilities from 2012, it is urgent to develop an innovative and sustainable disposal strategy that is eco-friendly, yet economically beneficial. In this study, methane production from food waste leachate (FWL) in landfill sites with landfill gas recovery facilities was evaluated in simulated landfill reactors (lysimeters) for a period of 90 d with four different inoculum–substrate ratios (ISRs) on volatile solid (VS) basis. Simultaneous biochemical methane potential batch experiments were also conducted at the same ISRs for 30 d to compare CH4 yield obtained from lysimeter studies. Under the experimental conditions, a maximum CH4 yield of 0.272 and 0.294 L/g VS was obtained in the batch and lysimeter studies, respectively, at ISR of 1:1. The biodegradability of FWL in batch and lysimeter experiments at ISR of 1:1 was 64% and 69%, respectively. The calculated data using the modified Gompertz equation for the cumulative CH4 production showed good agreement with the experimental result obtained from lysimeter study. Based on the results obtained from this study, field-scale pilot test is required to re-evaluate the existing sanitary landfills with efficient leachate collection and gas recovery facilities as engineered bioreactors to treat non-hazardous liquid organic wastes for energy recovery with optimum utilization of facilities. 相似文献

A variety of chemical mixtures exist in the soil of petrochemical waste sites, and many of these compounds are known immunotoxicants that have been observed to induce immune alterations in wild rodents inhabiting many of these petrochemical waste sites. Conventional histopathological assessments have been widely used with considerable success to investigate immunotoxicity of various agents under laboratory conditions. We hypothesized that histopathologic assessments would be equally sensitive for detecting exposure to complex mixtures of toxicants in cotton rats (Sigmodon hispidus) residing in contaminated habitats. Histopathological parameters were examined from a total of 624 cotton rats that were seasonally collected from 13 petrochemical-contaminated waste sites and 13 ecologically matched reference sites in Oklahoma over a 3-year period. Histopathological examination did not reveal any lesion associated with exposure to petrochemical wastes except renal inclusion bodies. Prevalence and severity of histologic lesions in liver and kidneys of cotton rats were significantly influenced by season, where prevalence and severity were lower in winter than summer on all study sites. These results suggest that the evaluation of toxicity from exposure to contaminants in the soil of industrial waste sites using histopathological assessments is not sensitive enough to detect exposure to the low levels of environmental contaminants present on most waste sites. 相似文献

Simultaneous measurements of gaseous species and fine-mode, particulate inorganic components were performed at the University of Seoul, Seoul in Korea. In the simultaneous measurements, a certain level of nitrous acid (HONO) was observed in the gas-phase, indicating possible heterogeneous HONO production on the surface of the ambient aerosols. On the other hand, high particulate nitrite (NO2?) concentrations of 1.41(±2.26) μg/m3 were also measured, which sometimes reached 18.54 μg/m3. In contrast, low HONO-to-NO2 ratios of 0.007(±0.006) were observed in Seoul. This indicates that a significant fraction of HONO is dissolved in atmospheric aerosols. Around the Seoul site, sufficient alkalinity may have been provided to the atmospheric aerosols from the excessive presence of NH3 in the gas-phase. Due to the alkaline particulate conditions (defined in this study as a particle pH >~3.29), the HONO molecules produced at the surface of the atmospheric aerosols appeared to have been converted into particulate nitrite, thereby preventing their further participation in the atmospheric O3/NOy/HOx photochemical cycles. The concentrations of seven odorous volatile organic compounds (VOCs) including styrene (S), toluene (T), xylene (X), methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), isobutyl alcohol (i-BuAl), methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK), and butyl acetate (BuAc) were measured continuously at hourly intervals from an on-line odor monitoring station in Ansan city, Korea (August 2005 to December 2007). Their concentration data (ppb) exhibited a narrow range of mean values despite large variabilities: 1.33 ± 8.81, 16.1 ± 96.6, 3.32 ± 11.5, 7.45 ± 10.3, 20.4 ± 2.38, 1.31 ± 1.16, and 2.43 ± 3.02, respectively. However, unlike aromatics, the distribution of other VOCs was characterized by infrequent occurrences, e.g., as large as 97.5% of i-BuAl data below detection limit. Comparison of temporal patterns indicates that aromatic VOCs are the highest in summer, while others tend to peak during fall (or summer). If the relative compositions of these VOCs were compared in terms of odor intensity, their contribution in the study area is unlikely significant as the malodor components. Evaluation of the data suggests that the distribution of the target VOCs should be affected more sensitively by local traffic activities rather than industrial processes in the surrounding area. Aerosol optical and microphysical parameters from severe haze events observed in October 2005 at Gwangju, Korea (35.10°N, 126.53°E) were determined from the ground using a multi-wavelength Raman lidar, a sunphotometer, and a real-time carbon particle analyzer and from space using satellite retrievals. Two different aerosol types were identified based on the variability of optical characteristics for different air mass conditions. Retrievals of microphysical properties of the haze from the Raman lidar indicated distinct light-absorbing characteristics for different haze aerosols originating from eastern and northern China (haze) and eastern Siberia (forest-fire smoke). The haze transported from the west showed moderately higher absorbing characteristics (SSA = 0.90 ± 0.03, 532 nm) than from the northern direction (SSA = 0.96 ± 0.02). Despite the use of recyclable materials increasing worldwide, waste disposal to landfill remains the most common method of waste management because it is simple and relatively inexpensive. Although landfill disposal is an effective waste management system, if not managed correctly, a number of potential detrimental environmental impacts have been identified including soil and ground water contamination, leachate generation, and gas emissions. In particular, improper post-closure treatment of landfills or deterioration of the conventional clay landfill capping were shown to result in land degradation which required remediation to secure contaminants within the landfill site.Phytoremediation is an attractive technology for landfill remediation, as it can stabilize soil and simultaneously remediate landfill leachate. In addition, landfill phytoremediation systems can potentially be combined with landfill covers (Phytocapping) for hydrological control of infiltrated rainfall. However, for the successful application of any phytoremediation system, the effective establishment of appropriate, desired vegetation is critical. This is because the typically harsh and sterile nature of landfill capping soil limits the sustainable establishment of vegetation. Therefore, the physicochemical properties of landfill capping soils often need to be improved by incorporating soil amendments. Biosolids are a common soil amendment and will often meet these demanding conditions because they contain a variety of plant nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphate, potassium, as well as a large proportion of organic matter. Such amendment will also ameliorate the physical properties of the capping soils by increasing porosity, moisture content, and soil aggregation. In this study, the distribution of airborne manganese (Mn) bound with particulate matters (PM) was investigated using data sets collected from 15 major cities in Korea over a 16-year time span (1991–2006). The mean Mn concentration measured from all the major cities in Korea throughout the entire study period was 71 ng m?3, while the annual mean values of different cities ranged from 10.5 ng m?3 in Yeosu (2003) to 615 ng m?3 in Wonju (2006). The Mn levels were considerably larger in industrialized areas than in other land-use types. The Mn concentrations in the major industrial cities of Pohang, Incheon, and Ansan averaged 255, 98.2, and 84.6 ng m?3, respectively; these values were far higher than those measured typically at most cities, e.g., 20–60 ng m?3. Seasonal patterns characterized by the peak occurrence in spring and the noticeable drop in summer reflected the effects of the massive PM inflow from China (spring) and effective washout by summer monsoon in East Asia, respectively. Examination of Mn data over a long-term period indicated that the temporal trends of Mn seen in most cities were fairly constant through time since the 1990s, although some abnormalities were observed in cities of strong man-made activities (e.g., Pohang and Wonju). In light of the severity of airborne Mn pollution in many urban areas, it is desirable to establish an abatement strategy that can help effectively reduce Mn levels. 相似文献
