A three-dimensional regression analysis attempted to model mesozooplankton (MSP) biomass using sea surface temperature (SST) and chlorophyll-a (Chl-a). The study was carried out from January 2014 to July 2015 in the southwestern Bay of Bengal (BoB) and sampling was carried out on board Sagar Manjusha and Sagar Purvi. SST ranged from 26.2 to 33.1 °C while Chl-a varied from 0.04 to 6.09 μg L?1. During the course of the study period, there was a weak correlation (r?= 0.32) between SST and Chl-a statistically. MSP biomass varied from 0.42 to 9.63 mg C m?3 and inversely related with SST. Two kinds of approaches were adopted to develop the model by grouping seasonal datasets (four seasonal algorithms) and comprising all datasets (one annual algorithm). Among the four functions used (linear, paraboloid, the Lorentzian and the Gaussian functions), paraboloid model was best suited. The best seasonal and annual algorithms were applied in the synchronous MODIS-derived SST and Chl-a data to estimate the MSP biomass in the southwestern BoB. The modelled MSP biomass was validated with field MSP biomass and the result was statistically significant, showing maximum regression coefficient for the seasonal algorithms (R2?=?0.60; p?=?0.627; α?= 0.05), than the annual algorithm (R2?=?0.52; p?=?0.015, α?=?0.05).  相似文献

The implications of metal contamination of agricultural soils due to long term irrigation with treated industrial wastewater and their subsequent accumulation in the vegetables/crops growing on such soils has been assessed in an area of industrial complex, Jajmau, Kanpur (India). Physico-chemical properties of the soil were also studied. The soil and vegetables/crops were sampled from an area of 2100 acre agricultural land and analyzed for physico-chemical properties and metal accumulation in different parts of the plants. The comparison of the data of physico-chemical properties of control and contaminated soil showed that salinity, electrical conductivity, available phosphorous, sodium and potassium content (both water soluble and exchangeable) were found high in contaminated soil. The analysis of plant available metal content in the soil showed the highest level of Fe, which ranged from 529.02 to 2615 μg g−1 dw and lowest level of Ni (3.12 to 10.51 μg g−1 dw). The analysis of the results revealed that accumulation of toxic metal Cr in leafy vegetables was found more than fruit bearing vegetables/crops. Thus, it is recommended that the leafy vegetables are unsuitable to grow in such contaminated sites. It is important to note that toxic metal, Ni was not detected in all the plants. The edible part of the vegetables (under ground) such as, garlic (19.27 μg g−1 dw), potato (11.81 μg g−1 dw) and turmeric (20.86 μg g−1 dw) has accumulated lowest level of toxic metal, Cr than leafy and fruit bearing vegetables. In some fruit part of vegetables such as, bitter gourd, egg plant, jack tree, maize and okra, the accumulation of Cr was not detected and may be grown in this area.  相似文献

Hyalella azteca (Crustacea: Amphipoda), water and sediments from 12 circum-neutral lakes between Sudbury and North Bay in Ontario, Canada were sampled in August 1998 and analyzed for 10 metals including Cu, Zn, Cd, Ni, Pb, Co, Mo, V, Ba and Ti. Statistical analyses showed that concentrations of the metals in H. azteca, water and sediment differed significantly (ANOVA, P<0.05) among lakes (except for Zn and Pb in H. azteca and Mo in water). There was a trend of declining metal concentration, especially for Cu, Ni and Co (in water, Hyalella and sediment), with distance from the smelters indicating the reduced impact of atmospheric pollution. Metal concentrations of lakes (water) in the Sudbury area were found to be lower compared to data from the 1970s and 1980s indicating an improvement in water quality. Metal concentrations in field-collected amphipods compared favorably with those measured in the laboratory in animals exposed to deep-water sediments, provided metal concentrations were not extremely low (e.g., Pb) and that water chemistry differences (e.g., pH) were taken into account for some metals (especially Cd). In general bioaccumulation of metals in H. azteca was predicted better from surface water than from sediment total metal.  相似文献

An attempt was made to investigate the relationship between raw coal characteristics and effluent quality in two coking coal washeries of Central Coalfields Limited, Kedla and Rajrappa in Jharkhand State, India. Coal samples-raw coal feed, washed fine clean coal, washed coarse clean coal, middlings and rejects were collected. Similarly, raw water (intake to washery) and effluent samples generated in the washeries, namely, fine coal jig under water, coarse coal jig under water and slurry pond water were also collected over a period of 6 months. Parameters outlined in Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF) Schedule VI Indian standards were determined, both in coal samples and water/washery effluent samples. Apart from the parameters listed in the standard, sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulphate and chloride found to be present in coal were also determined in coal and water samples. The processing results essentially in production of huge quantities of suspended material, which is beyond the stipulated limit of 100mg/l as specified in the Standard. Lowering of pH was observed in both the washeries. The trace/heavy elements were found to be concentrated in the heavier fractions in rejects produced from the washery. The concentrations of major elements in coal-Na, K, Ca, Mg, and minor elements in coal-Mn; F, SO4 and Cl were found to be higher in process water than in raw water indicating that these elements are transferred from coal to the water in washeries. However, only in the case of Mn, the stipulated limit of the effluent standard was exceeded. Trace elements like As, Se, Hg, Cd, though found to be present in coal, were absent in the process water indicating that these elements are not released by coal during washing.  相似文献

The present study reports the first analysis of water pollutants in Sri Lankan waters using a suite of biomarkers in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) residing in Bolgoda Lake which receives urban, industrial and domestic wastes from multiple sources. The fish were collected from the lake in the dry period (April 2005) and wet periods (September 2005, October 2006) and the levels of biomarkers viz. hepatic ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase (EROD), glutathione S-transferase (GST), metallothioneins, biliary fluorescent aromatic compounds, brain and muscle cholinesterases (ChE) were compared with those of the laboratory reared control fish and the fish obtained from a less polluted water body, Bathalagoda reservoir (reference site). The results revealed that biomarker levels of the fish collected from the reference site were not significantly different from the controls. Hepatic EROD and GST activities in fish from Bolgoda Lake were induced 4.2-16.6 folds and 1.4-3.3 folds respectively compared with the control fish. Analysis of bile in the lake fish revealed recent uptake of naphthalene, pyrene and benzo(a)pyrene type polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The induction of EROD activities in feral fish reflects the exposure of fish to aryl hydrocarbon receptor agonists including PAHs present as pollutants in the Bolgoda Lake. Cholinesterase activity in the fish inhabiting one sampling site of Bolgoda Lake was lower (22-40% inhibition) than the activity measured in the control fish indicating the presence of anticholinesterase pollutants in the area. Hepatic metallothionein levels in the lake fish were higher (1.9-3.2 folds) in comparison to the controls indicating metal exposure. The results support the potential use of these biomarkers in Nile tilapia in assessing pollution in tropical water bodies.  相似文献

We present a seasonal and baseline survey of selected physicochemical parameters in epipelagic samples from Qua Iboe (QIB) and Cross River (CRV) estuaries in Niger Delta region of Nigeria. The parameters analysed were temperature, pH, salinity, turbidity, total suspended solids (TSS), dissolved oxygen (DO), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen, available phosphorus, Ca2?+?, Mg2?+?, Na?+?, K?+? (exchangeable cations) and ${\rm SO}_{4}^{2-}$ , Cl???, ${\rm NH}_{4}^{+}$ and ${\rm NO}_{3}^{-}$ . The results showed that the physicochemical parameters exhibited spatiotemporally explicit variabilities. The mean levels of the parameters were higher during the wet season (June–September) except salinity, DO, Cl??? and ${\rm NH}_{4}^{+}$ in CRV, whilst QIB recorded higher mean levels for temperature, pH, salinity, BOD, TOC, ${\rm SO}_{4}^{2-}$ , Cl??? and ${\rm NH}_{4}^{+}$ during the dry season (November–February). Significant seasonal variability was recorded for salinity, DO, turbidity, TSS, ${\rm SO}_{4}^{2-}$ and ${\rm NH}_{4}^{+}$ levels in CRV and for turbidity, DO, BOD, TSS, TOC, available P, Na, Cl??? and ${\rm NO}_{3}^{-}$ levels in QIB. This study confirmed that the degree of variability of the various physicochemical surface water quality indicators is dependent on the prevalent environmental estuarine factors.  相似文献

Serial samples with a multiple corer were taken in order to understand the small-scale aggregation patterns in the nematode community. A total of 77 species was found in the sample. Fifteen dominant nematode species were examined by means of a dispersion analysis. Only one species (Metachromadora scotlandica) may be considered randomly distributed. A variogram analysis gave no proof of aggregation in that species, but all the other (aggregated) species displayed different spatial patterns: (1) a maximum/aggregation at the sample's margin, (2) two maxima/aggregations in the centre of the sample, (3) aggregation of individuals distributed at random over the entire sample (Metalinhomoeus typicus) and (4) aggregation of individuals distributed at random only in the centre of the sample (Paralinhomoeus ilenensis). These results allow the prognosis that distribution patterns are repetitive in five species (Microlaimus conothelis, M. marinus, Odontophora rectangula, Oncholaimellus calvadosicus, Viscosia rustica). Finally, by means of MDS-ordination (based on cosine similarity) two nematode associations were distinguished: one group represented by diatom-feeders (sensu lato), the other one comprised of DOM-users (sensu lato). Ammophila arenaria (marram or European beach grass) for dune stabilization in South Africa in the past and present, its present distribution in South Africa, and the perceptions of coastal management agencies and the public about its further use. The planting of A. arenaria became the most important means of dune stabilization, by human intervention, along the South African Cape coast in this century. Its modern distribution from the semiarid west coast to the subtropical shores of the Eastern Cape extends through various climatic zones. Although historical data are missing for some areas, there is no indication of its unaided spread. A. arenaria occurs at most sites because of its prior planting. The South African climate appears to affect its vigor. However, concern about the use of the alien grass has been raised since it has proved to be a highly invasive species in other parts of the world, particularly along the North American west coast and in Tasmania. While the CSIR (Council of Scientific and Industrial Research) promotes its use, CNC (Cape Nature Conservation) follows a policy that restricts the use of any alien plant, including A. arenaria, and requests further research on its invasive properties. Although a questionnaire survey shows that stabilization sites featuring large areas of A. arenaria are accepted by the South African public, current coastal management practices need to be analyzed critically. A thorough investigation of the potential invasiveness of A. arenaria on South African coastal dunes will be essential and shed new light on the American A. arenaria problem.  相似文献

The increasing amount of UV-B radiation (280 to 320 nm) reaching the earth's surface could endanger transparent fish and zooplankton in upper water layers. Previous studies on marine fish eggs and larvae focused mainly on the effects of high, lethal doses of ultraviolet irradiation. Now a sensitive test for accumulated, sublethal impairments of physiological performance has been established. In developing fish larvae (Pleuronectes platessa L.), the respiratory control responses to hypoxia were evaluated by combining a biocybernetical approach and a novel optical test system. Before testing respiratory control behavior, the larvae were irradiated with light containing UV-B (test individuals) or free from it (control individuals). Differences in the physiological reactions of these larvae were detected by biocybernetical analysis (linear systems analysis) of respiratory control. The analysis was based on the evaluation of changes in ventilatory rate caused by sinusoidally modulated partial pressures of ambient oxygen. The ventilatory movements of the larvae were recorded, analyzed and evaluated by video microscopy and digital image processing. After several days of irradiation with moderate UV-B doses or intensities (8.6 kJ m−2 d−1, corresponding to an irradiance of 0.24 W m−2 for 10 h), sublethal impairments of respiratory control could be detected in plaice larvae by this method; both the linearity of respiratory control itself and the parameters of linear control behavior were affected by UV-B. Concerning environmental implications, the results must still be interpreted cautiously, because natural irradiation conditions are more complex than the artificial regimen. Our biocybernetical approach will be useful for further studies on sublethal impairments of physiological functions caused by UV-B in fish and other transparent marine or limnic animal groups.
