A drained field complex was identified in the New River near Lamanai, with evidence of Pre-Classic and Classic Mesoamerican occupation. X-ray diffraction analysis of alluvium indicated a dominance of gypsum and a natural sedimentary origin for the fields. Weathering by percolating solutions eliminates the gypsum leaving montmorillonite clay. Sediments deposited on the drained fields during flooding are in excess of 890 kg/ha/year, with an organic content of >50%. As water levels drop, exchangeable bases are leached. The presence of montmorillonite in Layers 1 and 3 and the high CEC of the clay fraction account for the low permeability and high potential productivity of these soils for agriculture. The indication of high levels of inorganic P in Layer 3 is taken as a sign that the layer was the ancient planting surface. By clearing the present forest cover, local farmers would have a nutrient-rich soil suitable for agriculture, that their ancestors also exploited for many centuries.  相似文献

There are many industrial sites where open aggregate conical piles exist to store granular materials, like coal, industrial residuals, or other minerals. Usually these storage piles are placed in open areas, making them susceptible to wind erosion, which can create health, environmental, and/or economical concerns. It is common to minimize the dust emission through the placement of windbreaks in the vicinity of the storage piles, which reduces the wind speed in the vicinity of the pile’s surface. In this work, some experimental results from a wind tunnel study on the erosion of a conical sand pile, exposed or protected by a fence with porosities of 0, 70, and 83%, are shown. For the sheltered cases, the windbreak was placed at several distances from the pile’s leading edge, ranging from H to 4H, where H is the initial height of the non-eroded pile. The evolution of the shape of the sand pile is shown, at different instances in time, and the pile deformation quantified, using a novel experimental setup developed for wind erosion studies. This information might be regarded as a useful dataset for the benchmark of computational models aiming to produce the transient simulation of the aeolian erosion of stockpiles. The CFD results are comprised of the modeling of several experimental scenarios. The computational results for the surface wind velocity show a good correlation with the initial deformation of the pile. Based on the results, the isocontours of (u s /u r ) presented might be regarded as a good basis for the estimation of the pile shear velocity.  相似文献

Several extinct sperm whales (stem Physeteroidea) were recently proposed to differ markedly in their feeding ecology from the suction-feeding modern sperm whales Kogia and Physeter. Based on cranial, mandibular, and dental morphology, these Miocene forms were tentatively identified as macroraptorial feeders, able to consume proportionally large prey using their massive teeth and robust jaws. However, until now, no corroborating evidence for the use of teeth during predation was available. We report on a new specimen of the stem physeteroid Acrophyseter, from the late middle to early late Miocene of Peru, displaying unusual bony outgrowths along some of the upper alveoli. Considering their position and outer shape, these are identified as buccal maxillary exostoses. More developed along posterior teeth and in tight contact with the high portion of the dental root outside the bony alveoli, the exostoses are hypothesized to have developed during powerful bites; they may have worked as buttresses, strengthening the teeth when facing intense occlusal forces. These buccal exostoses further support a raptorial feeding technique for Acrophyseter and, indirectly, for other extinct sperm whales with a similar oral apparatus (Brygmophyseter, Livyatan, Zygophyseter). With a wide size range, these Miocene stem physeteroids were major marine macropredators, occupying ecological niches nowadays mostly taken by killer whales.  相似文献
