Effect of water quality on yield of sugar beet and sweet sorghum   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
To study the effects of quality of water on soil and plant, an experiment was conducted at Rudashat Drainage and Reclamation Experiment Station in 1999. Four irrigation water salinities (2, 5, 8 and 11 ds m(-1)) and two sugar crops (sugar beet and sweet sorghum) were used in this experiment. The results showed that under the same water quality, sweet sorghum used 2700 cubic meter per hectare less water than sugar beet. As the quality of irrigation water decreased, the soil salinity and exchangeable sodium percent increased which caused yield reduction for both plants. Sugar beet by accumulating Na and Cl in its leaves tolerated salinity but its usage as a forage crop caused some limitations, whereas sweet sorghum by not accumulating Na and Cl escape salinity and it can be used as a forage crop without any limitation.  相似文献

Conservation of the Biodiversity of Brazil's Inland Waters   总被引:6,自引:1,他引:6
Abstract:  In terms of biodiversity, Brazilian inland waters are of enormous global significance for Algae (25% of the world's species), Porifera (Demospongiae, 33%), Rotifera (25%), Cladocera (Branchiopoda, 20%), and fishes (21%). Threatened freshwater species include 44 species of invertebrates (mostly Porifera) and 134 fishes (mostly Cyprinodontiformes, Rivulidae), primarily distributed in south and southeastern Brazil. Reasons for the declines in biodiversity in Brazilian inland waters include pollution and eutrophication, siltation, impoundments and flood control, fisheries, and species introductions. These problems are more conspicuous in the more-developed regions. The majority of protected areas in Brazil have been created for terrestrial fauna and flora, but they also protect significant water bodies and wetlands. As a result, although very poorly documented, these areas are of great importance for aquatic species. A major and pressing challenge is the assessment of the freshwater biodiversity in protected areas and surveys to better understand the diversity and geography of freshwater species in Brazil. The concept of umbrella species (e.g., certain migratory fishes) would be beneficial for the protection of aquatic biodiversity and habitats. The conservation and improved management of river corridors and associated floodplains and the maintenance of their hydrological integrity is fundamental to preserving Brazil's freshwater biodiversity and the health of its aquatic resources.  相似文献

The chemical basis of food detection in the lobster Homarus gammarus   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A synthetic mixture of chemicals, based on the composition of an extract of squid muscle, has been developed, which is highly attractive for the lobster Homarus gammarus (L.). None of the components of this mixture was as attractive as the complete mixture, and substitution of D-amino acids for the natural L-forms also greatly reduced the attractiveness. This would indicate that several different types of chemosensory cell must be simultaneously stimulated to initiate exploratory feeding behaviour, and that a high degree of stereospecificity is involved. The results are discussed in the context of the wide range of food materials known to attract lobsters.  相似文献

The surface area of organisms and substrata is shown to be a significant ecological parameter because of its functional importance in the system. Quantification of surface area can be of particular value in morphologically complex environments such as coral reefs. The amount of surface in a reef habitat can be estimated by direct measurements and theoretical approximations, using a surface index (SI) for the amount of surface increase over that of a similarly bounded plane. SI values for a section of the British Honduran barrier reef ranged up to 15 in the reef-crest area at scales significant to macro-organisms. By combining substrate-area measurements with estimates of percent coverage of the major benthic algal components, a reef transect with a horizontal area of 300 m2 was shown to have over 300 m2 covered by benthic macroalgae. The potential for the further development of surface estimation techniques is discussed.  相似文献

Green crabs (Carcinus maenas) and rock crabs (Cancer irroratus) were exposed to various concentrations of copper as cupric chloride (CuCl2 · 2 H2O), and cadmium as cadmium chloride (CdCl2 · 21/2 H2O) for 48 h. The exposures were conducted at 5 different salinities. At the end of each exposure period, tests of blood-serum osmolality and gill-tissue oxygen consumption were performed. Copper-exposed crabs exhibited loss of osmoregulatory function with increasing copper concentration until normally hyperosmotic serum became isosmotic with the surrounding medium. Cadmium elevated greencrab serum above its normal hyperosmotic state. Copper had no effect on gill-tissue oxygen consumption; however, cadmium reduced the rate of oxygen consumption in both species tested.  相似文献

Data collected from a survey of the benthic fauna of Liverpool Bay (UK) have been used to study the distribution and structure, in terms of percent age dominance and percent age frequency, of the nematode populations. Cluster analysis of the faunistic data from individual stations has shown that the populations are not sharply delimited. The relative proportions of their characteristic genera are extremely variable, and apparently influenced by small differences in sediment composition. It is, thus, considered more logical to think in terms of a number of different habitats, each with certain characteristic genera, rather than in terms of a series of discrete associations. Six types of habitat are distinguished on the basis of sediment granulometry: (1) mud and sandy mud; (2) very muddy sand; (3) muddy sand; (4) muddy sand-gravel mixtures; (5) clean sand-gravel mixtures; (6) clean sand. Habitats 1, 2 and 3 were dominated by Sabatieria spp., the degree of dominance apparently being related to the percentage of silt-clay. Habitat 4 was dominated by Neochromadora sp. and Sabatieria spp. and Habitats 5 and 6 by Desmodora sp. Both generic and dominance diversity were very much lower for Habitats 1 and 2 than elsewhere.  相似文献

In a study on ascidian feeding ethology, rates of filtration and digestion of the unicellular algae Monchrysis lutheri by Phallusia mammillata (Cuvier, 1815) have been determined experimentally. All results were obtained under constant conditions of temperature, salinity, pH, light, and food, using 5 individuals in 9 experiments of 24 h each. The method of Winter (1969) has been modified by using an automatic system which enables constant food concentrations (±5%) to be maintained. Controls are made by a fluorometer. The rate of filtration is deduced from the quantity of culture food added each hour; this rate varies; a well defined rhythm is not observed, but alternating maxima and minima. The values obtained for, specimens of medium size (10 to 12 cm) vary from 3856 to 4730 ml/h and per gramme organic dry weight, the average being 4380 ml. The quantity of food actually converted by each ascidian, once it has passed the alimentary canal, is calculated from the amount of proteins present in food and faeces. Digestion rate varies from 4.65 to 5.75 mg of albumin equivalent/24 h and per gramme organic dry weight (mean 5.30 mg). The percentage food conversion (filtrated amount=100%) is high: 86 to 93%, with a mean of 90%.  相似文献

Representative samples from the epiphytic and psammolittoral communities were made during the summer of 1968 in North Sea Harbor, Southampton, Long Island, USA. In the epiphytic communities, the foraminifera were very patchy; 2.6% of the total samples accounted for 56.4% of the total foraminifera collected. The standing crop and species composition of the foraminifera changed throughout the summer. Two seasonal peaks were observed in the epiphytes. In early summer Protelphidium tisburyensis was the dominant form. In late July and August Elphidium incertum was dominant. Taken as a whole over the entire summer, the following species comprised the epiphytic foraminiferan community: Elphidium incertum (46.63%); Protelphidium tisburyensis (25.64%); Ammotium salsum (9.88%); Elphidium clavatum (6.74%); E. translucens (3.47%); Ammonia beccarii (2.83%); Ammobaculites dilatatus (2.08%); Trochammina inflata (1.8%); Elphidium advenum (< 1%); E. galvestonense (< 1%); E. gunteri (< 1%); Quinqueloculina lata (< 1%); Q. seminulum (< 1%) and Trochammina macrescens (< 1%). Although fewer species were found, many more foraminifera live in the benthos than in the epiphytic community. Taken as a whole, over the entire summer, the following species comprised the foraminifera in the psammolittoral community: Trochammina inflata (49.6%); Elphidium incertum (31.8%); Ammotium salsum (10.9%); Quinqueloculina seminulum (4.2%); Elphidium sp. (1.5); Protelphidium tisburyensis (0.9%); Ammonia beccarii (0.7%); Elphidium clavatum (< 0.1%); and E. translucens (< 0.1%). Three species, Ammotium salsum, Elphidium incertum and Trochammina inflata bloomed successively in the psammolittoral community. The distribution of the latter two species was correlated with the vertical and horizontal changes of grain size; Elphidium incertum distribution clustered around a median grain size of 0.1 mm, whereas Trochammina inflata clustered around a median grain size of 0.46 mm. The sediments were sampled both at high and low tide. No evidence was obtained to suggest migration of foraminifera through the sediments as a function of tidal cycle. Horizontal distribution of the foraminifera in the marsh was correlated with the flow patterns of very small rivulets in the study area. With respect to many species of foraminifera, the overlying epiphytic communities are not continuous with the psammolittoral communities below them in the water column. Protelphidium tisburyensis was an early summer dominant epiphyte, but was rare in the psammolittoral communities. Trochammina inflata, on the other hand, was dominant in the coarser, deeper sediments and was rare in the epiphytic community. Elphidium incertum is presumably a generalist species. It formed half the foraminiferan population throughout the water column. Ammotium salsum was also abundant in both communities.Supported by US AEC Contract AT (30-1) 3995. Ref. The mole crab Emerita holthuisi Sankolli occurred on two beaches, at Shertallai and at Cochin, in southwest India. Observations on the size-frequency of samples for Shertallai suggest that there were two main periods of recruitment, one in the pre-monsoon,months of February and March, and one during the monsoon, although there may have been some recruitment throught the year. At Cochin, E. holthuisi was present in the pre-monsoon period, but disappeared from the beach during the monsoon.  相似文献

A highly diverse soft-bottom community in Kingston Harbour, Jamaica is described to provide additional information on the structure of tropical benthic communities. It is shown that the community has a level of diversity unique to stable tropical environments, that dominance by a few species is greatly reduced, and that there are no true parallels to this community in similar environments. The community described seems to fit Sanders' stability-time hypothesis. The density and standing crop of the community are low, and possible explanations for this are discussed. Continuous year-round breeding, short life-spans, and fast turnover rates are suggested as the most important factors regulating biomass in the community described.  相似文献
