This paper presents numerical simulation results from a set of control and sensitivity experiments on the effects of winter-time air-sea interaction on the variability of sea surface temperature (SST) on a two-dimensional continental shelf which is uniform in the along-shore direction and is bounded to the west by a straight coast and to the east by a prescribed Gulf Stream front. In the control experiment, the model ocean circulation is driven by a time-dependent wind forcing which is parameterically coupled to the cross-shelf SST gradient. In the sensitivity experiments, wind stress, diabatic cooling and air-sea coupling are turned on separately to estimate the individual contribution of each effect to the cross-shelf SST variation. Experiments have also been carried out for different coupling strengths and diabatic cooling rates to examine the model sensitivity to these paramenters. The model results indicate that air-sea interaction could induce a secondary SST front on the shelf. Comparisons of model results with observations obtained during the Genesis of Atlantic Lows Experiment conducted off the east coasts of the Carolinas during January and February 1986 qualitatively confirm our finding. 相似文献

Accurate estimation of effective population size is important in attempts to conserve small populations of animals or plants. We review the genetic and ecological methods that have been used to estimate effective population size in the past and suggest that, while genetic methods may often be appropriate for the estimation of N e , and its monitoring, ecological methods have the advantage of providing data that can help predict the effect of a changed environment on N e . Estimation of N e , is particularly complex in populations with overlapping generations, and we summarize previous empirical estimates of N e that used ecological methods in such populations. Since it is often difficult to assess what parameters and assumptions have been used in previous calculations, we suggest a method that provides a good estimate of N e , makes clear what assumptions are involved, and yet requires a minimum of information. The method is used to analyze data from 14 studies. In 36% (5) of these studies, our estimate is in excellent agreement with the original, and yet we use significantly less information, in 21% (3) the original estimate is markedly lower, in 43% (6) it is markedly higher. Reasons for the discrepancies are suggested. Two of the underestimates involve a failure in the original to account for a long maturation time, and four of life overestimates involve problems in the original with the correction for overlapping generations. 相似文献

With existing and proposed air-quality regulations, ecological disasters resulting from air emissions such as those observed at Copperhill, Tennessee, and Sudbury, Ontario, are unlikely. Current air-quality standards, however, may not protect ecosystems from subacute and chronic exposure to air emissions. The encouragement of the use of coal for energy production and the development of the fossil-fuel industries, including oil shales, tar sands, and coal liquification, point to an increase and spread of fossil-fuel emissions and the potential to influence a number of natural ecosystems. This paper reviews the reported responses of ecosystems to air-borne pollutants and discusses the use of animals as indicators of ecosystem responses to these pollutants. Animal species and populations can act as important indicators of biotic and abiotic responses of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. These responses can indicate long-term trends in ecosystem health and productivity, chemical cycling, genetics, and regulation. For short-term trends, fish and wildlife also serve as monitors of changes in community structure, signaling food-web contamination, as well as providing a measure of ecosystem vitality. Information is presented to show not only the importance of animals as indicators of ecosystem responses to air-quality degradation, but also their value as air-pollution indices, that is, as air-quality-related values (AQRV), required in current air-pollution regulation. 相似文献

This study used an experimental model of a constructed wetland to evaluate the risk of mercury methylation when the soil is amended with sulfate. The model was planted with Schoenoplectus californicus and designed to reduce copper, mercury, and metal-related toxicity in a wastestream. The sediments of the model were varied during construction to provide a control and two levels of sulfate treatment, thus allowing characterization of sulfate's effect on mercury methylation and bioaccumulation in periphyton and two species of fish--eastern mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki) and lake chubsucker (Erimyzon sucetta). After one year in the experimental model, mean dry-weight normalized total mercury concentrations in mosquitofish from the non-sulfate treated controls (374+/-77 ng/g) and the reference location (233+/-17 ng/g) were significantly lower than those from the low and high sulfate treatments (520+/-73 and 613+/-80 ng/g, respectively). For lake chubsucker, mean total mercury concentration in fish from the high sulfate treatment (276+/-63 ng/g) was significantly elevated over that observed in the control (109+/-47 ng/g), the low sulfate treatment (122+/-42 ng/g), and the reference population (41+/-2 ng/g). Mercury in periphyton was mostly inorganic as methylmercury ranged from 6.6 ng/g (dry weight) in the control to 9.8 ng/g in the high sulfate treatment, while total mercury concentrations ranged from 1147 ng/g in the control to a high of 1297 ng/g in the low sulfate treatment. Fish methylmercury bioaccumulation factors from sediment ranged from 52 to 390 and from 495 to 3059 for water. These results suggest that sulfate treatments add a factor of risk due to elevated production of methylmercury in sediment and porewater which biomagnified into small fish, and may potentially increase through the food web. 相似文献
