Energy's role in the extraversion (dis)advantage: How energy ties and task conflict help clarify the relationship between extraversion and proactive performance

While academic and practitioner literatures have proposed that extraverts are at an advantage in team‐based work, it remains unclear exactly what that advantage might be, how extraverts attain such an advantage, and under which conditions. Theory highlighting the importance of energy in the coordination of team efforts helps to answer these questions. We propose that extraverted individuals are able to develop more energizing relationships with their teammates and as a result are seen as proactively contributing to their team. However, problems in coordination (i.e., team task conflict) can reverse this extraversion advantage. We studied 27 project‐based teams at their formation, peak performance, and after disbandment. Results suggest that when team task conflict is low, extraverts energize their teammates and are viewed by others as proactively contributing to the team. However, when team task conflict is high, extraverts develop energizing relationships with fewer of their teammates and are not viewed as proactively contributing to the team. Our findings regarding energizing relationships and team task conflict clarify why extraversion is related to proactive performance and in what way, how, and when extraverts may be at a (dis)advantage in team‐based work. Leadership theories have shifted over the last few decades from a focus on managerial functions and economic leader–follower exchanges toward greater focus on the interpersonal dynamics occurring within the leadership process. Theories such as transformational, ethical, authentic, and other “newer genre” theories were created to address neglected topics such as leader vision and inspirational messages, transparency, emotional effects, morality, individualized attention, and intellectual stimulation. Critiques of these theories, however, have been raised. In this paper, we address five of those critiques and argue for the validity and practical effectiveness of the new genre theories. Further, we describe how newer genre leadership research should be viewed as a performative epistemology, entailing a process of co‐creation involving scholars and practitioners. Nonylphenol is a toxic xenobiotic compound classified as an endocrine disrupter capable of interfering with the hormonal system of numerous organisms. It originates principally from the degradation of nonylphenol ethoxylates which are widely used as industrial surfactants. Nonylphenol ethoxylates reach sewage treatment works in substantial quantities where they biodegrade into several by-products including nonylphenol. Due to its physical-chemical characteristics, such as low solubility and high hydrophobicity, nonylphenol accumulates in environmental compartments that are characterised by high organic content, typically sewage sludge and river sediments, where it persists. The occurrence of nonylphenol in the environment is clearly correlated with anthropogenic activities such as wastewater treatment, landfilling and sewage sludge recycling. Nonylphenol is found often in matrices such as sewage sludge, effluents from sewage treatment works, river water and sediments, soil and groundwater. The impacts of nonylphenol in the environment include feminization of aquatic organisms, decrease in male fertility and the survival of juveniles at concentrations as low as 8.2 mug/l. Due to the harmful effects of the degradation products of nonylphenol ethoxylates in the environment, the use and production of such compounds have been banned in EU countries and strictly monitored in many other countries such as Canada and Japan. Although it has been shown that the concentration of nonylphenol in the environment is decreasing, it is still found at concentrations of 4.1 mug/l in river waters and 1 mg/kg in sediments. Nonylphenol has been referred to in the list of priority substances in the Water Frame Directive and in the 3rd draft Working Document on Sludge of the EU. Consequently there is currently a concern within some industries about the possibility of future regulations that may impose the removal of trace contaminants from contaminated effluents. The significance of upgrading sewage treatment works with advanced treatment technologies for removal of trace contaminants is discussed. 相似文献

A mass budget of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in San Francisco Bay is developed as a first step towards understanding the local sources and transport processes controlling PBDE fate in a highly urbanized estuary. Extensive monitoring of PBDEs in estuarine water and sediment, freshwater tributaries, air, and wastewater effluents and sludges were integrated with a mass budget model to provide a synthetic view of these emerging contaminants. The Bay inventories of BDE 47 and BDE 209 in 2006 were estimated to be 33+/-3 kg and 153+/-45 kg, respectively. Empirically derived estimates of annual inputs of BDE 47 and BDE 209 from all quantifiable external sources ranged from 11 to 28 kg/y and 22 to 24 kg/y, respectively. BDE 47 loads were dominated by wastewater while runoff from local tributaries represented the largest contributor to BDE 209 loads. Model results suggest the Bay PBDE inventory is highly sensitive to changes in external loads, with degradation and outflow being the major processes governing PBDE fate. The mass budget presented provides a framework for integrating future monitoring and modeling efforts. 相似文献

The partitioning of steroid estrogens in wastewater treatment and receiving waters is likely to influence their discharge to, and persistence in, the environment. This study investigated the partitioning behaviour of steroid estrogens in both laboratory and field studies. Partitioning onto activated sludge from laboratory-scale Husmann units was rapid with equilibrium achieved after 1 h. Sorption isotherms and Kd values decreased in the order 17??-ethinyl estradiol > 17??-estradiol > estrone > estriol without a sorption limit being achieved (1/n?>1). Samples from a wastewater treatment works indicated no accumulation of steroid estrogens in solids from primary or secondary biological treatment, however, a range of steroid estrogens were identified in sediment samples from the River Thames. This would indicate that partitioning in the environment may play a role in the long-term fate of estrogens, with an indication that they will be recalcitrant in anaerobic conditions. 相似文献

This article presents the results of a study that was conducted to determine the effectiveness of using alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) to enhance the phytoremediation of three different types of chemical contaminants. The chemicals studied were trinitrotoluene (TNT), the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) pyrene, and the polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) Aroclor 1248. Experiments were conducted using soils that contained high and low organic matter content. The results indicated that recoveries of pyrene and TNT from soil were highly dependent on the soil organic matter content, while the recovery of PCB was not. Significantly low levels of pyrene and TNT were recovered from all treatments in the soil with 6.3 percent organic matter content compared to recovery levels found in soil with 2.6 percent organic matter. The presence of alfalfa plants had a significant effect on the transformation of TNT and PCB in the low organic matter content soil only and had no effect on the fate of pyrene. In the low organic matter soil, only 15 percent and 17 percent of the initial TNT and PCB levels, respectively, were transformed in the unplanted control soils compared to 66 percent and 77 percent in the alfalfa planted pots. In both soil types, pyrene dissipation could not be attributed to the presence of alfalfa plants. Overall, it was concluded that under high soil organic matter conditions, adsorption and covalent binding to the soil organic matter appeared to be the dominant force of pyrene and TNT removal. The effectiveness of using alfalfa to enhance PCB and TNT transformations was more significant in the lower organic matter soil; thus phytoremediation had a greater effect in soils with lower organic matter content. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. 相似文献

A method is described for the measurement of nanogram quantities of a range of methyl and butyltin compounds. The method utilises a modified purge and trap/boiling point separation technique for the determination of organotin compounds in sediment samples. A spatial survey of sediment samples within 5 river systems in the East Anglia region of the United Kingdom was undertaken and identified a range of organotin compounds with concentrations of tributyltin (TBT) ranging from <3.9 ng g(-1) up to 1291 ng g(-1). The highest values were found in areas connected with boating activities. Wherever TBT was present, dibutyltin and monobutyltin were most commonly found along with small concentrations of certain methyltins. 相似文献

Phosphorus removal from wastewater can be achieved either through chemical removal, advanced biological treatment or a combination of both. The chemical removal of phosphorus involves the addition of calcium, iron and aluminium salts to achieve phosphorus precipitation by various mechanisms which are discussed. In addition, the effects of operating conditions, especially wastewater characteristics; sludge production in terms of quality and quantity; optimisation of chemical use and re-use; points of chemical addition combined with biological treatment; alternative chemical/physical treatments and examples of full-scale applications are also reviewed. Biological phosphorus removal is dependent upon the uptake of phosphorus in excess of normal bacterial metabolic requirements and is proposed as an alternative to chemical treatment. Early developments and the postulated removal mechanisms are reviewed; these include either natural chemical precipitation, enhanced biological removal, or a combination of both. The nature of excess biological phosphorus removal in activated sludge wastewater treatment plants is evaluated, considering various operating parameters, bacteriology and process designs. 相似文献

Further studies on the influence of zeolite type A on metal transfer in the activated sludge process
Investigations were carried out to determine the effect of zeolite type A on metal removal by activated sludge using laboratory activated sludge simulations. They were operated at constant aerator sludge age and settler surface loading. Different concentrations of raw zeolite and zeolite extracted from washing powder (0, 15, 30, 60, 120 mgl?1) were introduced into the simulations. The zeolite was added at two degrees of calcium exchanged for sodium, 25 and 75% of the maximum exchange capacity. Metals were added at concentrations typical of mixed domestic-industrial waste waters. The results show that there was no adverse effect on metal removal by the laboratory activated sludge simulations in the presence of zeolite type A. 相似文献
