Managing protected areas effectively requires information about patterns of visitor use, but these data are often limited. We explore how geotagged photos on Flickr, a popular photo-sharing social-media site, can generate hotspot maps and distribution models of temporal and spatial patterns of use in two mountain-protected areas of high conservation value. In Aconcagua Provincial Park (Argentina), two routes to the summit of Aconcagua were used in summer, but most visitors stayed close to the main road, using formal and informal walking trails and the Visitor Centre, while in winter, there was very limited visitation. In Kosciuszko National Park (Australia), alpine walking trails were popular in summer, but in winter, most visitors stayed in the lower altitude ski resorts and ski trails. Results demonstrate the usefulness of social-media data alone as well as a complement for visitor monitoring, providing spatial and temporal information for site-specific and park-level management of visitors and potential impacts in conservation areas. 相似文献

Variations in the relative contributions of gene flow and spatial and temporal variation in recruitment are considered the
major determinants of population genetic structure in marine organisms. Such variation can be assessed through repeated measures
of the genetic structure of a species over time. To test the relative importance of these two phenomena, temporal variation
in genetic composition was measured in the limpet Cellana grata, among four annual cohorts over 10 years at four rocky shores in Hong Kong. A total of 408 limpets, comprising individuals
from 1998, 1999, 2006 and 2007 cohorts were screened for genetic variation using five microsatellite loci. Minor but significant
genetic differentiation was detected among samples from the 1998/1999 collection (F
ST = 0.0023), but there was no significant differentiation among the 2006/2007 collection (F
ST = 0.0008). Partitioning of genetic variation among shores was also significant in 1998/1999 but not in the 2006/2007 collection,
although there was no correlation between genetic and geographic distances. There was no significant difference between collections
made in 1998/1999 and 2006/2007. This lack of clear structure implies a high level of gene flow, but differentiation with
time may be the result of stochastic recruitment variation among shores. Estimates of effective population size were not high
(599, 95% C.L. 352–11397), suggesting the potential susceptibility of the populations to genetic drift, although a significant
bottleneck effect was not detected. These findings indicate that genetic structuring between populations of C. grata in space and time may result from spatio-temporal variation in recruitment, but the potential development of biologically
significant differentiation is suppressed by a lack of consistency in recruitment variability and high connectivity among

As far as the impact of air pollutants on human health being is concerned, ozone (O3) is one of the most pollutant sources, and, in particular, the ground level ozone is responsible for a variety of adverse effects on both human being and plant life. To protect the population from such adverse health effects, early information and precautions about the high ozone level need to be ascertained. In this study, statistical characteristics of ground level ozone is analyzed according to field monitoring data in mixed residential, commercial and industrial areas, e.g., Tsuen Wan area in Hong Kong. The study deals with the characteristics of hourly and daily mean ozone levels under different climatic conditions such as temperature, solar radiation (SR), wind speed (WS), and other pollutant concentration levels. The study aims to investigate the importance of meteorological factors and their impact on relevant pollutant concentration levels from a chemical aspect. Further, reasons for the spatial and temporal variation of ozone levels are discussed. All these results will provide a physical basis for accurately predicting ozone concentration in similar research. 相似文献

Two aspects of the permafrost of the Hudson Bay region are examined. The first is the climatological conditions that support
permafrost especially along the southwestern shore of Hudson Bay. The second is the fate of the permafrost using recent climate
change scenarios. The continuous permafrost along the shores of southwestern Hudson Bay is examined from a climatological
perspective. Two hypotheses are explored to explain the presence of continuous permafrost in this region in spite of the relatively
"warm" local climate. Possible errors in the calculation of thawing degree days and the asymmetries in frozen and unfrozen
soil thermal conductivities are successively examined. Only the second hypothesis is likely to explain the presence of permafrost
in southwestern Hudson Bay. Sophisticated climate models are used to assess the potential change in permafrost distribution
in the Hudson Bay region. Nine simulations using three different versions of the Canadian Centre of Climate Modelling and
Analysis (CCCma) general circulation model are used to project permafrost distribution. Two surface temperature thresholds,
–5 and –10 °C, are used to diagnose permafrost grid points. All simulations, including those that include reduction of CO2 emissions, showed at least a 50% reduction of permafrost by 2100 using these temperature thresholds.

In view of the greater accuracy of the ω HEM correlation and the resulting conservative PR valve sizing (relative to the traditional PR valve sizing methods), the ω HEM-based flow calculations are recommended for all situations where flashing or two-phase flow occurs within the PR valve. However, as with any correlation, the accuracy of the ω HEM correlation results drops as the system to which it is applied diverges from the data used to develop it. Analysis of 15 different systems representative of actual refinery streams indicate that for fluids with a wide boiling range and for very non-ideal systems such as those containing hydrogen, the HEM correlation underpredicts the mass flux significantly (i.e. overpredicts the PR valve size). Since the large deviations are on the conservative side, the procedure will result in excessively large PR valves that may cause problems because of chattering of the PR valves, but would not present potential for vessel failure. The majority of the deviations are a result of the fact that the simplifying assumptions built into the correlation for single component do not truly characterize the actual flashing behaviour of many multicomponent fluids. The alternative approach presented, in which the correlation parameter ω is based on the actual flashing behaviour, eliminates nearly all the deviations and significantly improves the results of the correlation regardless of the system analysed. For trouble systems (those containing more than 0.1 wt% hydrogen and for some multicomponent fluids with a nominal boiling range greater than 80°C (150°F), the alternative approach should be used to define the correlation parameter ω. Use of this alternative approach is valid for any system (and will improve the accuracy of the correlation) but does require an additional flash calculation. However, for other systems the original formulation of ω is adequate and can be used. 相似文献

Age differences in safety attitudes and safety performance in Hong Kong construction workers 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
PROBLEM: Safety in the construction industry is a major issue in Hong Kong, representing about 46% of all occupational injuries in 1998. This study explored linear and curvilinear relations between age and safety performance (accident rates and occupational injuries), as well as safety attitudes, in construction workers in Hong Kong. METHOD: A Chinese version of the Safety Attitude Questionnaire (SAQ by Donald & Canter) was developed and administered to a sample of Chinese construction workers (N=374, 366 males, 8 females) from 27 construction sites. RESULTS: Accident rates were not related to age. Occupational injuries were related to age in a curvilinear manner, with injuries at first increasing with age, then decreasing. Two safety attitude scales were related to age with older workers exhibiting more positive attitudes to safety. If age and tenure are controlled, some attitude scales are predictors of safety performance. IMPACT ON INDUSTRY: Management/supervisors, team leaders, and workers are all responsible for safety, and any negative bias toward older construction workers is unfounded. 相似文献

The Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) system employing activated sludge process is an alternative wastewater treatment technology. A cycle of the conventional SBR system generally consists of five periods, with complete aeration during the React period to oxidize the organic matter and nitrify the ammonium-nitrogen of wastewater. Laboratory-scale reactors were used to evaluate the feasibility of incorporating alternative aerobic-anoxic-aerobic stages within the React period for simultaneous removal of organic matter, N and P. Two cycles of SBR process per day were maintained.Under the operation strategy of 0.75-h fill, 8-h react (with continuous aeration), 3.25-h settle, draw and idle periods, the treatment performance became consistent after running the system for two to four cycles (1–2 days). The percentages of both BOD5 and COD removal were around 94% from Cycle 2 onwards, the BOD5 content dropped from initial 251 mg L−1 to less than 14 mg L−1 in the final effluent. A steady nitrification (about 97%) was obtained from Cycle 4 onwards, with 1 mg NH4+-N L−1 and 25 mg NO3−-N L−1 present in the final effluent. This suggested that the time required for SBR system to acclimate and reach an equilibrium state was relatively short when compared with the time needed for continuous flow activated sludge system. The findings also show that 4-h aeration during the react period was long enough to achieve more than 90% nitrification. With the incorporation of a 3-h anoxic stage after the initial 4-h aeration of the react period, a satisfactory denitrification process was observed, with nitrate level dropped from 27 to around 8 mg L−1 within 3 h. The second aeration stage did not cause significant change in wastewater nitrogen content. The wastewater phosphate content declined rapidly during the initial 4-h aeration and P-release was not observed during the anoxic stage. A slight reduction of P was found in the second aeration stage suggesting that more P-uptake occurred in this stage. A 12-h cyclic SBR system with the incorporation of 4-h aerobic, 3-h anoxic and final 1-h aerobic stages into the 8-h react period was demonstrated to be able to remove C, N and P simultaneously. 相似文献

This study investigated the impact of important environmental variables (i.e.,wind speed,solar radiation and cloud cover) on urban heating.Meteorological parameters for fifteen years (from 1990 to 2005),collected at a well developed and densely populated commercial area (Tsim Sha Tsui,Hong Kong),were analyzed in details.Urban heat island intensity (UHII),a well known indicator of urban heating,has been determined as the spatially averaged air-temperature difference between Tsim Sha Tsui and Ta Kwu Ling (a thinly populated rural area with lush vegetation).Results showed that the UHII and cloud cover have increased by around 9.3% and 4%,respectively,whereas the wind speed and solar radiation have decreased by around 24% and 8.5%,respectively.The month of December experienced the highest UHII (10.2°C) but the lowest wind speed (2.6 m/sec) and cloud cover (3.8 oktas).Conversely,the month of April observed the highest increases in the UHII (over 100%) and the highest decreases in wind speed (over 40 %) over fifteen years.Notably,the increases in the UHII and reductions in the wind speed were the highest during the night-time and early morning.Conversely,the intensity of solar radiation reduced while the intensity of urban cool island (UCII) increased during solar noon-time.Results demonstrated strong negative correlation between the UHII and wind speed (coefficient of determination,R2=0.8) but no negative correlation between UCII and solar radiation attenuation.A possible negative correlation between UHII and cloud cover was investigated but could not be substantiated. 相似文献

With the approval of the Chinese central government, the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) decided to participate in a regional emissions trading (ET) pilot scheme in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region. This scheme, instead of aiming to curb global warming, is geared mostly toward reducing air pollutant (that is, SO2, NOx, RSP, and VOCs) emissions by 20–55% by 2010, thus improving air quality in the region. Both the HKSAR and the Guangdong Provincial Governments will impose emission caps on their respective power plants in the region and allocate emissions credits to them. This study explores the background of this regional ET scheme and correlates it with the emissions reduction scenario to provide more details for assessing its applicability to Hong Kong and Guangdong Province. Although practicing ET in the PRD region presents many challenges, establishing an appropriate ET scheme is of paramount importance for Hong Kong, as well as other cities in the PRD region, to achieve a sustainable air quality. 相似文献

An improved liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method was developed and validated to investigate the occurrence of selected antibiotic residues in Hong Kong and Pearl River Delta. LC and MS parameters were optimized to produce the maximum analytical responses for each compound. The established method targeted five groups of antibiotics, namely, macrolides, sulfonamides, tetracyclines, quinolones, and amphenicols. The method was validated for three types of environmental water matrices, namely, reservoir, river, and estuarine waters. Low detection limits of 0.17–0.18 ng/L for macrolides, 0.22–0.34 ng/L for quinolones, 0.67–1.65 ng/L for tetracyclines, and 0.27–0.56 ng/L for sulfonamides were obtained. No apparent interferences were observed in the chromatograms of all antibiotics groups. The developed method was preliminarily used to analyze water samples collected from Yuen Long River in New Territories, Hong Kong and four sites along the Pearl River Delta. Results showed that high level of tetracycline was found among the groups tested in the local river samples. In Pearl River Delta, we identified significant levels of erythromycin, roxithromycin, and sulfadiazine in Shenzhen Reservoir. 相似文献
