There is concern that P from dairy effluent sprayfields will leach into groundwater beneath Suwannee River basins in northern Florida. Our purpose was to describe the effects of dairy effluent irrigation on the movement of soil P and other nutrients within the upper soil profile of a sprayfield over three 12-mo cycles (April 1998-March 2001). Effluent P rates of 70, 110, and 165 kg ha(-1) cycle(-1) were applied to forages that were grown year-round. The soil is a deep, excessively drained sand (thermic, uncoated Typic Quartzipsamment). Mean P concentration in soil water below the rooting zone (152-cm depth) was < or = 0.1 mg L(-1) during 11 3-mo periods. Mehlich-1-extractable (M1) P, Al, and Ca in the topsoil increased over time but did not change in subsoil depths of 25 to 51, 51 to 71, 71 to 97, and 97 to 122 cm. Topsoil Ca increased as effluent rate increased. High Ca levels were found in dairy effluent (avg.: 305 mg L(-1)) and supplemental irrigation water (avg.: 145 mg L(-1)) which likely played a role in retaining P in the topsoil. An effect of effluent rate on P and Al concentrations in the topsoil was not detected, probably due to large and variable quantities present at project initiation. The P retention capacity (i.e., Al plus Fe) increased in the topsoil because Al increased. Dairy effluent contained Al (avg.: 31 mg L(-1)). Phosphorus saturation ratio (PSR) increased over time in the topsoil but not in subsoil layers. Regardless of effluent rate, the P retention capacity and PSR of subsoil, which contained 119 to 229 mg kg(-1) of Al, should be taken into account when assessing the risk of P moving below the rooting zone of most forage crops.  相似文献

The diagnostic value of amniotic fluid gamma-glutamyl-transpeptidase (GGTP) and intestinal alkaline phos-phatase (iALP) was evaluated in 55 patients who underwent amniocentesis for karyotyping because fetal gastric or small bowel dilatation had been detected by ultrasound. Gastrointestinal malformation was confirmed in 46 cases and there was no gastrointestinal anomaly in nine cases. Prenatal ultrasound was suggestive of gastroduodenal dilatation in 34 cases (group I) and small bowel dilatation in 21 cases (group II). In group I, amniotic fluid GGTP above the 99th percentile was 71 per cent sensitive and 100 per cent specific for a true anatomical defect of the digestive tract (mainly duodenal atresia). In group II, high levels of GGTP and/or iALP were 69 per cent sensitive and 83 per cent specific for a fetal digestive tract anomaly. In other words, when digestive tract dilatations were diagnosed by prenatal sonography, abnormal amniotic fluid enzyme activities were strongly suggestive of such an anomaly, the possibility of which was not precluded by normal amniotic fluid iALP and GGTP activities. But amniotic fluid digestive enzyme activities do not help in defining the prognosis.  相似文献

Nitzschia laevis Hustedt grew in the dark in the presence of either glutamate or glucose as substrate. Complex mixtures of yeast extract or tryptone plus lactate also supported good heterotrophic growth, while tryptone alone only supported very slow growth in the dark. The observed growth rates of N. laevis in the dark at different concentrations of glutamate or glucose could be accounted for by the measured uptake rates of these compounds. The affinity of the uptake systems for glutamate and glucose (K s =0.03 mM for each) was quite high, and similar for dark- and light-grown cells. The lack of a lag-phase when cells were transferred from photoautotrophic to heterotrophic growth conditions can be explained by the presence of uptake systems for glutamate and glucose in ligh--grown cells, as well as in dark-grown cells. However, the uptake capacity was generally higher in the latter than the former. N. laevis also took up alanine and lactate according to Michaelis-Menten kinetics, with a K s for alanine of 0.02 mM and for lactate of 0.4 mM. Malate and glycerol were not taken up to a significant extent by the cells. Cells grown in continous light had a doubling time of 18 h. The shortest doubling time observed in the dark on glutamate was 48 h and on glucose 24 h. In order to determine whether phytoplankton growth rates were normal or depressed, total plant carbon (g l–1) and in situ production rates (g C l–1 d–1) were measured for phytoplankton assemblages at Weathership Station P (50°N; 145°W) and at 53°N; 145°W in the subarctic Pacific in May and August 1984. Plant carbon, estimated from cell volumes determined using epifluorescence microscopy, was distributed as follow: 28% in the <2 m fraction, 38% in the 2 to 5 m size fraction, and the remainder in size classes >5 m. Carbon-specific growth rates (k), as doublings d–1, were calculated for the phytoplankton assemblages as a whole at each sampling depth down to 100 m for three days in May and for four days in August. The populations in the upper part of the euphotic zone showed average doubling rates of 1 d–1 and thus appeared to be growing at rates normally expected for the prevailing conditions of light and temperature. Rainfall acidity response functions for crop yield and growth are necessary to predict the overall impacts on crop yields of ambient and/or anticipated levels of acidic rain. The experiment described herein was performed at Brookhaven National Laboratory during 1984 and 1985 to determine the effects of simulated rainfalls of pH 5.6, 4.4, 4.1 and 3.3 on seed yields of four cultivars of field-grown soybeans (Glycine max Merrill). Soybeans were chosen because previous results suggested that certain varieties of this crop are sensitive to rainfall acidity and because they are an economically important crop in the USA. Sixteen plots per treatment were used. Plants were grown using standard agronomic practices under automatically movable exclusion shelters which minimize changes in the plant's microclimate. Analysis of variance of seed yields of the four cultivars showed significant treatments for all four cultivars. For all cultivars, seed yields were lower when exposed to simulated rainfalls of pH 4.4, 4.1 and 3.3 compared with rainfalls of pH 5.6. Compared with pH 5.6 rainfall (controls), yields of Amsoy exposed to pH 4.4, 4.1 and 3.3 were lower by 13, 11 and 12%, respectively. The percentage yield reductions for Asgrow, Corsoy and Hobbit were not as great as those of Amsoy. Averaged over all cultivars tested, there was a 9% seed reduction for plants exposed to simulated rain at pH 4.1 (comparable to ambient) compared with pH 5.6.  相似文献

Nitrate reductase (NR) activity in the surf-zone diatom Chaetoceros armatum T. West was studied in its natural habitat at Copalis Beach, Olympic Peninsula, Washington (USA) over a period of 18 months. Variations of enzyme activity were found, depending on the season and the time of day. General seasonal trends in NR activity were correlated with nitrate concentrations in the surf-zone. The results also indicated that several factors may limit the activity of the enzyme. This is one of the reasons why NR activity could not be correlated with environmental nitrate concentration on the basis of individual measurements at a given point in time. Enzyme inhibition due to the presence of ammonium occurred on several occasions throughout the study period, and could be detected by the NR assay. This phenomenon for the most part masked any pattern of diel periodicity in NR activity that might have been expected to exist in cells in the natural environment. Cultures of C. armatum and Asterionella socialis Lewin and Norris were also studied in the laboratory. A diel fluctuation in NR activity corresponding to the pattern shown in natural phytoplankton by other authors was exhibited in C. armatum under a light-dark regime of 8 h light – 16 h dark and a light intensity of 400 lux.  相似文献
