The aim of this study was to determine whether the composition of the demersal fish fauna in coastal marine waters in temperate Australia changes markedly with increasing water depth and distance from the shore and whether the composition of the fish fauna in water depths of 5 to 35 m undergoes cyclic, seasonal changes. Samples of demersal fishes were therefore collected by trawling over the predominantly sandy substrate at nine sites located in water depths of 5 to 15 m or 20 to 35 m and within 20 km of the shore in four regions along ∼200 km on the lower west coast of Australia. The sampling regime involved trawling for fishes at each site at night in seven consecutive seasons between the summer of 1990/1991 and winter of 1992. A total of 72 435 fishes, representing 77 families, 143 genera and 172 species was caught. The compositions of the fish faunas in offshore waters with depths of 5 to 35 m were shown to differ markedly from those previously recorded for nearshore marine waters in the same regions. However, as some species, such as Sillago burrus, S. vittata, S. bassensis and Rhabdosargus sarba, increase in size, they move out from their nursery areas in nearshore waters into deeper and more offshore waters, where spawning occurs. Ordination showed that, in each of the four regions, the composition of the fish fauna in depths of 5 to 15 m differs from that in depths of 20 to 35 m. This difference is attributable to the fact that some species, such as  S. burrus, S. vittata and Upeneichthys lineatus, are far more abundant in depths of 5 to 15 m, whereas other species, such as S. robusta, U. stotti and Lepidotrigla modesta, occur predominantly in depths of 20 to 35 m. However, the samples collected from the single site that was inshore but in deeper water demonstrate that the composition of the fish fauna is influenced by distance from shore as well as by water depth. The compositions of the fish faunas differed with latitude, largely due to the fact that some subtropical species, such as Polyspina piosae, S. burrus and  S. robusta, did not extend down into the more southern regions. Ordination also showed that the composition of the fish faunas at all but one of the nine sites underwent pronounced and consistent cyclic, seasonal changes. This seasonal cyclicity at the different sites was attributable to sequential patterns of immigrations and emigrations by a number of fish species during the course of the year. These seasonal migrations involved, inter alia (1) movements of certain species from their nursery areas into these deeper waters, e.g.  S. bassensis and Scobinichthys granulatus; (2) migrations into and off the sandy areas of the inner continental shelf, e.g. Arnoglossus muelleri; (3) migrations to spawning areas, e.g. Sillago robusta; and (4) movements into areas where detached macrophytes accumulate in winter, e.g. Cnidoglanis macrocephalus and Apogon rueppellii. A set of geographically isolated differential nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) load model scenarios from major Chesapeake basins provides information on the relative impact of nutrient loads on primary production and dissolved oxygen in the Chesapeake Bay. Model results show the relationships of deep water dissolved oxygen with nutrient limitation-related algal blooms, organic carbon loads from the watershed, estuarine circulation, nutrient cycling, and nutrient diagenesis. The combined effect of changes in load from multiple basins is additive for changes in both chlorophyll-a and deep water dissolved oxygen concentrations. Management of both N and P are required in the Chesapeake watershed and tidal waters to achieve water quality standards, but overall efficiencies could be gained with strategies that place greater emphasis on P control in the upper Bay and greater emphasis on N control in the lower Bay. The areas of the Bay with the highest degree of dissolved oxygen degradation that generally drive management decisions are mostly P-limited and are significantly influenced by the load from the upper Bay’s basins. Reducing P from the upper Bay’s basins will intensify P limitation and would allow an increase in N of about six times the weight of P reduction. Combining the relative nutrient reduction effectiveness with the relative control cost information could improve management efficiency and provide benefits at a lower cost. Summary Lifetime reproductive success (LRS) of male (N=103) and female (N= 66) spotted sandpipers (Actitis macularia) was studied for 13 years of a 17-year study at Little Pelican Island, Leech Lake, Minnesota. There was no sex difference in longevity, but females had significantly more mates, eggs, chicks, fledged young, and young returning in subsequent years than did males. Variance in LRS was partitioned into five life-history components: longevity (L), mates per year (M), eggs per mate (E), proportion eggs hatched (H), and proportion of chicks fledged (F). For both sexes, F accounted for the greatest proportion of variance in LRS (males, 43%; females, 47%), followed by L (males, 26%; females, 43%) and H (males, 21%; females, 28%). Positive covariance between H and F was consistent with predator-caused clutch and brood loss. Contrary to our expectations, males had a higher coefficient of variation in reproductive success than did females. Conjoined twins     
Conjoined twins have been a source of fascination for both the general public and the medical profession since time immemorial. Their birth was initially viewed as an ominous sign of impending disaster. This was followed by a prolonged period through the Middle Ages and into the nineteenth century when they were regarded as freaks or monstrosities and were exhibited with substantial financial reward at circuses and sideshows. Recently, conjoined twins have attracted intense media interest, which has coincided with increasing success in their separation. This article gives an overview of the role of prenatal ultrasound in assessing the prognosis and discusses the post-natal surgical management and outcome. APCA Is Thriving     
Fiscal nineteen seventy three-four was another busy year for the Association. It was a year of expanded services, publications, and meetings. New initiatives on the part of the Board of Directors, the Technical Council and its committees, local APCA Sections and the Headquarters staff were undertaken. All of the statistical reports are positive, and show increased membership, pages published, advertising, meetings, and involvement of members. But of more importance, APCA is filling its role in a positive and meaningful way, and is continuing to attract persons working in the air pollution control profession to its many programs.

As most of you know by now, dues for individual members have been increased from $25 to $35 annually because of the continued inflation in postage, paper, and cost of doing business.  相似文献
