The influence of wave exposure and of tidal height on mussel (Perna perna Linnaeus) population structure (size, density, biomass and adult/juvenile correlations) was examined at 18 sites along the south coast of South Africa. Sites were classified as exposed or sheltered prior to sampling, without reference to the biota, on the basis of aspect, topography and wave regime. A single set of samples was collected from each site during three spring tide cycles. Adult mussels on these shores almost always attach directly to the rocks, and layering of mussels is virtually absent. Shore height always had a strong influence on population structure, but exposure had significant effects only lower on the shore, and almost exclusively on mussel sizes. Principal component analysis (PCA), based on size distribution data for each population, revealed a general upshore decrease in the modal size of the adult cohort. The effects of exposure on size distribution, however, varied with tidal height. PCA separated exposed zones, with larger mussels, from sheltered zones on the low-shore. Farther upshore the two shore types were increasingly confounded. The maximum size of mussels showed a similar pattern, with significant differences (ANOVA, p < 0.05) between exposed and sheltered sites only on the low- and mid-shores. Density was calculated from randomly placed quadrats (i.e. not necessarily from areas of 100% cover) and showed a different pattern. Adult (>15 mm) densities decreased up the shore, with low-, mid- and high-shore zones being significantly different from one another (ANOVA, p < 0.0001; followed by multiple range tests). However, exposure had no significant effect on density, nor was there a significant interaction with zone. Recruit (<15 mm) densities were positively correlated with adult (>15 mm) densities in all zones and for both exposure regimes ( p < 0.05 in all cases), but there was considerable variability and extremely low predictability in these relationships (r 2 generally <0.2). Predictability tended to be greater towards the high-shore, where adults were more clumped. As with density, biomass was not affected by exposure, but decreased upshore as mean size and density decreased. A reduction in the influence of exposure farther upshore may be caused by greater emersion overriding the effects of exposure. The presence of free space within mussel beds and significant correlations between recruit and adult densities suggest that these mussel populations are recruit limited. Implementing the UNCCD: Participatory challenges   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) emphasizes the need for public participation in land degradation assessment and rehabilitation. While participatory approaches are supported by a growing body of research and practice, meaningfully involving the people affected by land degradation is far from straightforward. This paper investigates the challenge of using the UNCCD as a guide to influence community participation in policy‐making and practice at national and local levels by analyzing experiences from three southern African countries. We show that the UNCCD represents a useful normative framework for addressing degradation problems, but that the participatory ethos is difficult to enact at the national level. Whilst there is increasing evidence that combining local and scientific knowledge using participatory mechanisms can deliver the benefits that the Convention strives to achieve, communication between researchers and practitioners, and those involved in implementing the UNCCD at the national level needs to be strengthened. Broad lessons and best practices in incorporating participatory practices into policy development are elucidated. Our case studies show that a range of mixed‐method, interdisciplinary approaches can enable policy‐makers and practitioners to meaningfully engage those who are affected by land degradation in its definition, assessment and rehabilitation.  相似文献

What happens when those who provide conservation advice are required to take policy and management action based on that advice? Conservation advocates and scientists often try to prompt regulatory change that has significant implications for government without facing the challenge of managing such change. Through a case study, we placed ourselves in the role of the government of Thailand, facing obligations to seahorses (Hippocampus spp.) under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). These obligations include ensuring that its exports of seahorses do not damage wild populations. We applied a CITES-approved framework (which we developed) to evaluate the risks of such exports to 2 seahorse species. We used the framework to evaluate the pressures that put wild populations of the species at risk; whether current management mitigates the risk or offsets these pressures; and whether the species is responding as hoped to management policy. We based our analysis on information in published and grey literature, local knowledge, citizen science data, results of government research, and expert opinion. To meet CITES obligations, exports of both species would need to be prohibited until more precautionary adaptive management emerged. The risk of any exports of Hippocampus trimaculatus was above a tolerable level because of a lack of appropriate management to mitigate risks. In contrast, the risk of any exports of Hippocampus kuda could become tolerable if monitoring were put in place to assess the species’ response to management. The process we developed for Authorities to determine risk in response to CITES guidelines was challenging to implement even without the need for government to consider social implications of conservation action. Despite the imperfections of our risk evaluation, however, it still served to support adaptive management. Conservationists need to keep implementation in mind when offering advice.  相似文献

The British Columbia Ministry of Forests’ “Aboriginal Rights and Title — Consultation Guidelines”, prepared in response to a Supreme Court of Canada decision on aboriginal rights and title, presents an interesting example of how common law influences provincial environmental policy. The policy addresses the British Columbia government’s fiduciary duty to First Nations and requires staff to consult with aboriginals during operational forestry planning. Adequate understanding of the policy is essential for lawful forest management. The Consultation Guidelines have become a key environmental policy in British Columbia. This evaluation will increase understanding of the Consultation Guidelines and aboriginal title for forest practitioners and policy makers. Within the context of a Vancouver Island case study, the policy is analyzed in view of the following criteria: effectiveness, efficiency, equity, and effort. Even though the policy is over 2 years old and the government is actively managing forests in an area under negotiation for treaty, the policy has yet to be implemented. As a result, aboriginal concerns about the long-term environmental and economic sustainability of current forest practices go unheeded. This situation potentially jeopardizes the government’s ability to address its fiduciary responsibilities to aboriginals, as defined in case law and the Canadian Constitution.  相似文献

Climate change is a global phenomenon that it is experienced and understood in places. This research examined the ways in which community members understand, perceive, and experience climate change in the context of Thunder Bay Ontario; a mid-size and remote city located in Northern Ontario, using semi-structured walking interviews (N?=?18). Themes that emerged from the interview data are presented and discussed in relation to the literature. Results emphasise that participants conceptualise climate change as a complex ethical issue that is caused by greenhouse gas emissions and a range of underlying social, economic, and political factors. Participants identified numerous changes in weather, seasonality, and extreme events and anticipate future impacts on local and regional food, water, and forests primarily. Emotional impacts of climate change, ranging from worry to feeling hopeful, emerged as an important theme. The data illustrate that the observed, experienced, and anticipated impacts of climate change are shaped by experiences on the land and water within the community of Thunder Bay and the region of Northern Ontario. Finally, the interview data illustrate that participants believe that transformative action, by a range of actors, is called for to address the problem of climate change. This study highlights the importance of place-based and context-specific climate change research and the utility of walking interviews.  相似文献

Understanding physiological and environmental variables that initiate sexual maturity would provide fundamental information on life history dynamics. The aim of this study was to test the usefulness of the common circumnuclear ring (CNR), an oocytic structure similar to the Balbiani body, which appears just prior to oocyte development as a predictor of first maturation in Atlantic herring (Clupea harengus). The relative roles of physiology (e.g. fat) and photoperiod as triggers of maturation were also investigated. Samples were collected in May 2008 (72°26′–73°84′N/11°26′–18°40′E) and February 2009 (56°12′–59°45′N/00°25′–03°06′W). These data suggested that thresholds in body size may influence the decision to mature. We also found that short days (winter solstice) may be the photoperiod trigger for a first-decision window for both Norwegian spring-spawning (NSS) and North Sea autumn-spawning (NSAS) herring. The second-decision window for NSAS herring maturation appears to be triggered by longer days (spring equinox), while a decreasing rate of day lengthening may trigger NSS herring maturation. So, photoperiodic cycle is a key determinate of the timing of maturation in Atlantic herring.  相似文献

Ecological conditions following removal of exotic plants are a key part of comprehensive environmental management strategies to combat exotic plant invasions. We examined ecological conditions following removal of the management-priority buffelgrass (Pennisetum ciliare) in Saguaro National Park of the North American Sonoran Desert. We assessed soil, vegetation, and soil seed banks on seven buffelgrass site types: five different frequencies of buffelgrass herbicide plus hand removal treatments (ranging from 5 years of annual treatment to a single year of treatment), untreated sites, and non-invaded sites, with three replicates for each of the seven site types. The 22 measured soil properties (e.g., pH) differed little among sites. Regarding vegetation, buffelgrass cover was low (≤1 % median cover), or absent, across all treated sites but was high (10–70 %) in untreated sites. Native vegetation cover, diversity, and composition were indistinguishable across site types. Species composition was dominated by native species (>93 % relative cover) across all sites except untreated buffelgrass sites. Most (38 species, 93 %) of the 41 species detected in soil seed banks were native, and native seed density did not differ significantly across sites. Results suggest that: (1) buffelgrass cover was minimal across treated sites; (2) aside from high buffelgrass cover in untreated sites, ecological conditions were largely indistinguishable across sites; (3) soil seed banks harbored ≥12 species that were frequent in the aboveground vegetation; and (4) native species dominated post-treatment vegetation composition, and removing buffelgrass did not result in replacement by other exotic species.  相似文献

Recruitment patterns of marine invertebrates are affected both by settlement and early post-settlement events. This study examined the settlement and recruitment patterns of echinoderms at three sites in the rocky subtidal zone of Bocabec Cove, Bay of Fundy, Canada using artificial turf collectors and quadrats on the natural substrate. Potential predators were quantified at two of the sites along transects and in 1-m2 quadrats. Both potential predators and competitors were quantified in 0.0625-m2 quadrats. Settlement varied across sites (1.5–3 km apart) and two years of sampling (2004, 2005). The site of most potential settlement differed for the three groups of echinoderms: sea urchins (Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis), sea stars (Asterias spp.) and sea cucumber (Psolus fabricii). Settlement densities on the artificial turf collectors tended to be greater than the densities of settlers on the natural substrate. On the natural substrate, the only significant difference between densities of juveniles over time was that newly settled sea stars were found in July and were not found the following October. Large lobsters and carnivorous worms were potential predators with densities that varied between sites. Potential competitors that differed in abundance between sites were herbivorous gastropods and conspecifics for sea urchins; and carnivorous worms for sea stars. This study suggests that patterns of recruitment are either set up by patterns of settlement or by events during the first few weeks/months on the benthic substrate for these echinoderms.  相似文献
