A central question in behavioral ecology has been why animals live in groups. Previous theories about the evolution of sociality
focused on the potential benefits of decreased risk of predation, increased foraging or feeding efficiency, and mutual aid
in defending resources and/or rearing offspring. This paper argues that access to mutualistic endosymbiotic microbes is an
underappreciated benefit of group living and sets out to reinvigorate Troyer’s hypothesis that the need to obtain cellulolytic
microbes from conspecifics influenced the evolution of social behavior in herbivores and to extend it to nonherbivores. This
extension is necessary because the benefits of endosymbionts are not limited to nutrition; endosymbionts also help protect
their hosts from pathogens. When hosts must obtain endosymbionts from conspecifics, they are forced to interact. Thus, complex
forms of sociality may be more likely to evolve when hosts must repeatedly obtain endosymbionts from conspecifics than when
endosymbionts can be obtained either directly from the environment, are vertically transmitted, or when repeated inoculations
are not necessary. Observations from a variety of taxa are consistent with the ideas that individuals benefit from group living
by gaining access to endosymbionts and the complexity of social behavior is associated with the mode of acquisition of endosymbionts.
Ways to test this theory include (a) experiments designed to examine the effects of endosymbionts on host fitness and how
endosymbionts are obtained and (b) using phylogenetic analyses to examine endosymbiont–host coevolution with the goal of determining
the relationship between the mode of endosymbiont acquisition and host sociality. 相似文献

Purpose
Throughout history, a consequent part of the medieval stained glass windows have been lost, mostly because of deliberate or accidental mechanic destruction during war or revolution, but, in some cases, did not withstand the test of time simply because of their low durability. Indeed, the glasses that remain nowadays are for many in a poor state of conservation and are heavily deteriorated. Under general exposure conditions, stained glass windows undergo different kinds of weathering processes that modify their optical properties, chemistry, and structure: congruent dissolution, leaching, and particle deposition (the combination of those two leading together to the formation of neocrystallisations and eventually crusts). Previous research has studied the weathering forms and the mechanisms from which they are originated, some others identified the main environmental parameters responsible for the deterioration and highlighted that both intrinsic (glass composition) and extrinsic (environmental parameters) factors influence glass degradation. Nevertheless, a clear quantification of the impact of the different deterioration extrinsic factors has not been performed. 相似文献13.

Summary From 1983 to 1986 we monitored 284 European starling (Sturnus vulgaris) nests in New Jersey for evidence of intraspecific brood parasitism and egg removal during the laying period. Egg removal occurred significantly more often at nests where intraspecific brood parasitism was detected (12 of 35 nests, 34%) than at unparasitized nests (23 of 249 nests, 9%). Brood parasitism (92% of parasitized nests) and egg removal (74% of nests with egg removal) were most common at nests where egg laying began in April of each year (i.e., early nests). Egg removal occurred at 26 (19%) and brood parasitism at 32 (23%) of 138 early nests. Both brood parasitism and egg removal were concentrated during the first four days in the laying period when brood parasitism is most likely to be successful and when host nests are most vulnerable to parasitism (Romagnano 1987). Both parasitism and removal usually involved a single egg at each nest. We detected brood parasitism and egg removal on the same day at five of 12 nests (42%) where both were observed. Because starlings do not remove foreign eggs from their nests once they begin laying (Stouffer et al. 1987) we hypothesize that parasite females sometimes removed host eggs while parasitizing nests. 相似文献

The pulmonate limpet Siphonaria gigas, a simultaneous hermaphrodite, lives in the mid- to upper-intertidal zone on rocky shores in the tropical Eastern Pacific. Samples along five transects taken in June–July, 2004, on Culebra Point (8º54′N to 79º31′W), Republic of Panama, showed that 71 % of the population occurred in fissures, a significant preference for this habitat. Of 200 adults in 27 fissures, 150 lived side by side in pairs with their shells touching or nearly so, a significant deviation from the number of pairs expected given a random arrangement. Pair frequency did not increase with limpet density suggesting pairing was not an incidental consequence of crowding. Pair living was unknown in the genus Siphonaria, and is very uncommon among simultaneous hermaphrodites. Reproductive synchrony and restrictions on movement due to predation and environmental stress may limit opportunities for encountering and mating with multiple partners favoring pair living in S. gigas. 相似文献

A large number of chorionic villi samples obtained from women undergoing elective first trimester termination of pregnancy was analysed by enzyme assays similar to those applied to cultured amniotic cells. The levels of 15 lysosomal enzymes were compared to those observed in tissue cultures of amniotic cells obtained through amniocentesis at 16-18 weeks of pregnancy and the results were discussed in order to assess the usefulness of trophoblast biopsy for first trimester diagnosis of hereditary lysosomal diseases. The data suggest the applicability of this source of fetal cells for prenatal diagnosis of fifteen respective genetically determined enzyme deficiencies with the probable exception of α-L -iduronidase deficiency. Enzyme determinations were performed on chorionic villi samples of two pregnancies at risk for Tay-Sachs disease, three pregnancies for GM1 gangliosidosis type 1, one for mucopolysaccharidosis type VI and one for Wolman's disease. 相似文献

This article provides a case study of small-scale private sector provision of water supply in Paraguay, where the Government has sought sector policy reforms that would encourage private investment in drinking water supply. Ironically, while the Government has focused almost entirely on garnering the interest of large private international water companies, much smaller local firms have already made significant investments in drinking water services for the poor, all without any participation or encouragement from the Government. Outside Paraguay's two major cities, Asunción and Ciudad del Este, large numbers of aguateros currently provide piped potable water to lower-income people. Though the aguateros have little legal footing — they are in many respects informal and unregulated —they have constructed as much as one third of all the new drinking water connections in these two cities over the past 20 years. The small-scale water systems in Paraguay offer a model of financial, economic, and water-use efficiency. This article asserts that an abundance of groundwater resources, cheap access to electricity for pumping, and a spirit of informal investment, among other variables, has spawned widespread use of this approach. This article documents and analyzes the features of these independent small-scale water providers in Paraguay and the efficiency they bring to the use of water resources in meeting drinking water demands among the poor. It also cautions against policies that may trample on such entrepreneurial spirit in the name of State-managed privatization. 相似文献

The influence of air pollution on the chemical composition of Pinus sp. needles was examined in polluted and control sites in and around the city of Palermo (Sicily). The chemical composition of needles indicated the extent of contamination of the trees, which were cytologically examined. Cell analysis was carried out on pine samples, including needles and pollens, from 15 different locations. Biostructural and spectrophotometric tests were performed. In particular, concentrations of toxic (Cd, Pb) and non-toxic metals (Fe,Cu, Zn) were determined, as well as injury caused by their accumulation in the needles. The more highly urbanised areas showed higher concentrations of metals (Pb, Cu. Zn, Fe); only the concentrations of Cd and Mn turned out to be constant in all the sites. Cell analysis revealed displasic cells and secondary metabolite accumulations in trees from polluted sites. These changes observed were most likely caused by the toxic effect of pollutants. 相似文献
