Ecological footprint has been given much attention and widely praised as an effective heuristic and pedagogic device for presenting current total human resource use in a way that communicates easily to almost everyone since 1996 when Wackernagel and Rees proposed it as a sustainable development indicator. In vivo observations in laboratory mesocosms and aquaria, accompanied with in situ photographic surveys, have shown that the burrowing shrimp Calocaris templemani has a significant impact on bottom sediment dynamics and geochemistry in the St. Lawrence Estuary. This burrowing shrimp establishes and maintains complex semi-permanent burrows made up of several interconnected, ‘U-shaped’ galleries with generally four or more openings to the sediment surface. In the Estuary, at 345 m depth, Calocaris average density was estimated at 3.4 individuals m?2. Observed individual burrows reached a maximum volume of 0.54 L. C. templemani displaces this volume of mostly anoxic sediments from the subsurface layers (down to 15 cm) to the sediment surface, thereby obscuring some of the natural stratification patterns. With an estimated turnover rate of about 8 L m?2 year?1 of sediment, our calculations suggest that over a period of about 18.75 years, all the sediment to a depth of 15 cm will have been reworked by C. templemani alone. 相似文献

The Yasuní-ITT Initiative was an innovative development proposal based on the non-production of oil in Yasuní National Park in Ecuador, in exchange for international compensation, eitherin the form of direct payment or payment for environmental services. My aim is to investigate how the different actors understand this compensation for non-production of oil in Ecuador, an oil dependent country. Using a chronological review of the Initiative and forty in-depth interviews with key players, I critically engage the ‘environmental narrative’ around the Initiative inspired by sumak kawsay -a philosophy of life based on non-mercantilist values, known as “well living” in English or “buen vivir” in Spanish- and degrowth. In this article I argue that understanding the Initiative as an environmental matter and not as a problem of oil rent dependency exemplifies the limits of sumak kawsay and degrowth as proposals for an alternative to development. Results from Yasuní show that the Initiative ended up reproducing the fictions of nature valuation instead of de-linking nature from the valuation process. By drawing on a critical political economic framework, this paper shows that categories such as “dependency” and “rent” are fundamental in understanding the challenges of moving away from extraction-based development in developing countries. In summary, failing to differentiate between payment for the non-production of oil and compensation from the environmental services, Yasuní was a ´lost ‘opportunity for a bottom-up debate on what to produce and what not. 相似文献

We studied the effects of heavy metal exposure on host plant choice and performance of the grass miner Chromatomyia milii (Diptera, Agromyzidae). Cadmium decreased plant growth in a dose-dependent way. C. milii preferred the control to the cadmium-exposed plants for feeding and oviposition. Moreover, preference for the control plants increased with increasing cadmium exposure of the alternative choice. Adult and offspring performance decreased with increasing plant cadmium exposure. This suggests that, at least under our laboratory conditions, host choice of C. milii is adaptive under pollution stress. Foliar cadmium concentration increased and the soluble sugar concentration decreased with increasing cadmium exposure. Regression analysis showed that both latter components might be responsible for the decrease in performance of C. milii on cadmium-exposed plants. The protein and amino acid concentration of the leaves, the amount of structural defenses, and water concentration were not affected by the cadmium treatment. 相似文献

Summary Both field observations and laboratory experiments have suggested that queens of I. humilis inhibit the production of new queens (gynes). Using small colony fragments, laboratory experiments were conducted to determine the means by which this inhibition is achieved. The addition of queen corpses to queenless fragments effectively inhibited the production of gynes, suggesting that a queen inhibitory primer pheromone is involved. This inhibitory influence was removed when corpses were washed in pentane, lending further support to the pheromonal hypothesis. Adult gynes (winged virgin queens) were not inhibitory, whereas young dealated mated queens of the same age were, suggesting that only inseminated queens produce the pheromone. Daily addition of eggs to queenless units did not appear to have a strong inhibitory influence, indicating that the lower worker/larva ratios associated with the presence of an egg-laying queen in such colony fragments does not greatly influence the production of sexuals. Pheromonal inhibition of gyne development appears to be achieved mainly by preventing the sexualization of bipotent female larvae, probably by affecting the brood-rearing behavior of workers. In addition, queens may also cause the execution of female larvae after they have become sexualized. In nearly all cases, the addition of a living queen to previously queenless units containing gyne larvae caused workers to execute one or more of these larvae within 24 h. In some cases queens were also seen attacking gyne larvae. The addition of queen corpses resulted in the execution of gyne larvae, suggesting that a queen pheromone mediates, at least in part, this execution behavior of workers. These results show that I. humilis queens exert control over the production of gynes in two ways: (1) by preventing the sexualization of female larvae and (2) by killing female larvae after they have become sexualized. A queen primer pheromone appears to be involved in both processes. Queen behavior also plays a role, at least in the execution of gyne larvae. This queen control over the production of gynes, probably mostly pheromonal, appears to operate strongly in the field where gynes are produced only in spring just after a sharp drop in the inhibitory queen influence due to the massive execution of queens by the workers.

Red squirrels (Sciurus vulgaris) and introduced eastern grey squirrels (S. carolinensis) scatterhoard seeds of broadleaf trees. Scatterhoarded seeds are an essential resource in spring and their consumption increases
red-squirrel fitness. We examined whether grey squirrels partly deplete the high-energy food resources cached by red squirrels,
reducing their consumption, in two ways: (1) at the population level, comparing energy intake of feeding on cached seeds between
a study site with red and grey squirrels and one with only red squirrels present; and (2) at the individual level, in the
study site where species co-exist, relating hoard recovery of red squirrels to the amount of core-area overlap with grey squirrels.
There were no significant site differences in the mean daily energy intake of red squirrels feeding on seeds recovered from
caches. However, in the red-grey site, during spring, red squirrels that had a high percentage of their home-range core area
overlapped by grey squirrels had a lower daily energy intake than low-overlap red squirrels. Body mass of red squirrels in
spring was negatively correlated with the percentage of interspecific core-area overlap, but not with core-area overlap with
other red squirrels. Our data suggest that interspecific competition for scatterhoarded seeds, with grey squirrels pilfering
red squirrels' food caches, caused a reduced energy intake in red squirrels with a high degree of interspecific core-area
overlap, and reduced body mass in spring. Therefore, cache pilfering is likely to reduce reproductive output in red squirrels,
and thus play a role in the replacement of red by grey squirrels.

Summary Winter flocks of crested tits Parus cristatus, typically consisting of two adults and one or two non-kin 1st-year birds, were observed to split up into subflocks in a way related to ambient temperature. On warm days, when they were foraging in subflocks without 1 st-year birds, alpha males always occupied the most preferred upper foraging sites, as expected from their top dominance rank. On cold days, when foraging in flocks with 1st-year birds, 8 out of 13 alpha males shifted to lower (less preferred) positions below their alpha mates while allowing the latter to forage at the best sites. As enhanced access to preferred microsites on days with high energy stress is believed to increase overwinter survival probability, this shifting behaviour of alpha males can be considered as a form of mate care. Out of 13 alpha males, however, 5 did not shift and always occupied the best foraging sites irrespective of flock composition. As (i) these non-shifting males were in poorer physical condition than shifting males, (ii) they scanned significantly less for predators than either females or shifting males when foraging in the uppermost tree parts, and (iii) four out of five non-shifting males were replaced by immigrants in early spring, absence of mate care during winter may be caused by constraints due to condition. High-quality-territory owners in poor condition at the end of autumn were most vulnerable to replacement by immigrants. Therefore, as four out of five replacements affected high-quality territories, selective intrusion by immigrants is suggested.

In heterogeneous environments, differential niche selection by two competing species will result in niche partitioning so that individuals of each species can maximise their fitness under different sets of environmental variables. Thus, niche partitioning is considered essential to allow co-existence of ecologically related species. To assess whether niche partitioning was occurring between native red squirrels and alien grey squirrels living together in a 13-ha high-quality mixed deciduous woodland in north Italy, we investigated temporal and spatial patterns in their activity and foraging behaviour between 1996 and 1998. We used live trapping and radio-tracking to study numbers, distribution and behaviour of squirrels. Daily and seasonal temporal activity patterns, and activity on the ground and in the trees, were similar in the two species. However, grey squirrels were more tree specialists and had a narrower tree-species niche width than red squirrels, in particular making greater use of oak. Other studies of red and grey squirrels in allopatry show that the two species differ in the extent they utilise oak. Overall, tree-species niche overlap was about 70%. Grey squirrels had larger home ranges than red squirrels. Home ranges and core areas of both species were larger in males than females. Also, intraspecific home range and core-area overlap patterns were similar to those found in allopatric populations of these species. Overall, there was no evidence that the use of space of one species was affected by the other. Our results show that there was no niche partitioning of activity or foraging behaviour in time or space during the study. This suggests that, at moderate grey-squirrel densities, red squirrels are unable to avoid competition with grey squirrels, and that competition for food and/or space will occur when these resources become limiting. 相似文献

Social Hymenoptera are general models for the study of parent-offspring conflict over sex ratio, because queens and workers frequently have different reproductive optima. The ant Pheidole pallidula shows a split distribution of sex ratios with most of the colonies producing reproductives of a single sex. Sex ratio specialization is tightly associated with the breeding system, with single-queen (monogynous) colonies producing male-biased brood and multiple-queen (polygynous) colonies female-biased brood. Here, we show that this sex specialization is primarily determined by the queens influence over colony sex ratio. Queens from monogynous colonies produce a significantly more male-biased primary sex ratio than queens from polygynous colonies. Moreover, queens from monogynous colonies produce a significantly lower proportion of diploid eggs that develop into queens and this is associated with lower rate of juvenile hormone (JH) production compared to queens from polygynous colonies. These results indicate that queens regulate colony sex ratio in two complementary ways: by determining the proportion of female eggs laid and by hormonally biasing the development of female eggs into either a worker or reproductive form.
