A large study has been undertaken to assess the exposure to diesel exhaust within diesel trucking terminals. A critical component of this assessment is an analysis of the variation in carbonaceous particulate matter (PM) across trucking terminal locations; consistency in the primary sources can be effectively tracked by analyzing trends in elemental carbon (EC) and organic molecular marker concentrations. Ambient samples were collected at yard, dock and repair shop work stations in 7 terminals in the USA and 1 in Mexico. Concentrations of EC ranged from 0.2 to 12 microg m(-3) among the terminals, which corresponds to the range seen in the concentration of summed hopanes (0.5 to 20.5 ng m(-3)). However, when chemical mass balance (CMB) source apportionment results were presented as percent contribution to organic carbon (OC) concentrations, the contribution of mobile sources to OC are similar among the terminals in different cities. The average mobile source percent contribution to OC was 75.3 +/- 17.1% for truck repair shops, 65.4 +/- 20.4% for the docks and 38.4 +/- 9.5% for the terminal yard samples. A relatively consistent mobile source impact was present at all the terminals only when considering percentage of total OC concentrations, not in terms of absolute concentrations.  相似文献

Continuous carbon dioxide (CO2) measurements over the period 2004-2005 for a rural area in the upper Spanish plateau were examined to characterize the influence of sources and sinks. The diurnal pattern and the annual cycle are presented. The baseline CO2 levels over the time frames researched are determined so as to achieve a more accurate verification of the ambient conditions when uptake is deployed at the site. The results reveal a mean concentration of 384.2 ppm, with 9.8-ppm variability. The mean maximum concentration levels at night, 4:00 a.m. Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), are 390.7 ppm, mainly when atmospheric stability increased. Moreover, mean CO2 levels increase in spring, peaking in May at 388.5 ppm. Concentrations then decline in summer and again increase in autumn, reaching a similar mean value in December. The results also show consistency with vegetation and crop growth, as well as the influence of meteorological conditions, soil features, and human activity in the area. Minimum and maximum CO2 concentrations present a similar but opposite variation, 4.4 ppm x yr(-1), with values decreasing in the latter. Diurnal variation is more pronounced during the growing season and higher in 2004, partly because of abundant rainfall. The lower daily amplitudes in the remaining months are attributed to the reduction in plant and soil respiration processes. The influence of wind on CO2 concentrations has enabled us to identify the contribution of emissions from the cities of Valladolid and Palencia. An increase in mean CO2 concentrations was observed in the, east-southeast, southeast, south-southeast, and south sectors for the former city, and north and east for the latter. The ratio of CO2 increase in the wind sectors influenced by these sources yielded a factor of 1.2 with respect to the relationship between the populations of the two cities.  相似文献

Theoretical explanations and empirical evidence of how disorder is perceived and its relation to independently observed measures of disorder are rare. In recent work, Sampson and Raudenbush [2004. Seeing disorder: Neighborhood stigma and the social construction of “Broken Windows”. Social Psychology Quarterly, 67(4), 319–342] investigated how individuals form perceptions of disorder and found that perceptions of disorder in Chicago neighborhoods are shaped not only by observable conditions of disorder, but also by neighborhoods’ racial and socioeconomic composition. In this paper, we investigate the bases for perceiving disorder with data from Baltimore using a methodology similar to that used by Sampson and Raudenbush (2004). Using surveys, systematic social observations, census data, and police records to investigate variations in individual perceptions of disorder at the individual and neighborhood levels, this study, consistent with the literature, finds that visual cues of disorder are not unambiguous and that perceptions of disorder are based not only on neighborhood observed disorder but also on individual characteristics of residents and neighborhood social structure. Additionally, our findings indicate that neighborhood poverty and not neighborhood racial composition affects perceptions of disorder in Baltimore. The fact that these findings are in contrast to the findings in Chicago suggests that the influence of racial segregation on perception of disorder is imbedded in the larger historical context.  相似文献

The use of brainstorming techniques for the generation of conceptual models, as the basis for the integrated management of physical-ecological-social systems (PHES-systems) is tested and discussed. The methodology is applied in the analysis of the Aysén fjord and watershed (Southern Chilean Coast). Concentrations and congener specific profile of DDTs, PCBs and PCDD/Fs have been determined in a number of Spanish breast milk samples. The concentrations found indicate a decreasing tendency compared to previous data from the 1990s. Mean concentrations of 238 ng/g fat weight, 111 ng/g fat weight and 82.1 pg/g fat weight were found for DDTs, PCBs and 2,3,7,8-PCDD/Fs, respectively. When the WHO-TEQs were calculated, PCDD/Fs was the family contributing with the highest percentage to the total (62-84%), followed by the non-ortho PCBs (10-25%) and the mono-ortho PCBs (5-24%). The congener specific accumulation patterns found were comparable to those reported in other studies in industrialised countries. In addition, the levels of 9 PBDEs congeners have been also determined in the breast milk samples. The concentrations ranged from 0.04 to 1.38 ng/g fat weight. The enantiomeric enrichment of a number of chiral PCBs in the breast milk samples, including congeners 84, 91, 95, 132, 135, 149, 171, 174, 176 and 183, has also been studied, for some of them for the first time in this matrix.  相似文献

The aim of the present work was to develop a new bioassay involving the presence of phytochelatins (PCs), detoxifying intracellular metal-binding peptides, in microalgae as response to metal bioavailability in re-suspensions of metal-polluted marine sediments. For this purpose, the synthesis of PCs has been studied in laboratory cultures of three marine diatoms, namely Phaeodactylum tricornutum, Thalassiosira weissflogii and Skeletonema costatum, exposed to elutriates of sediments collected in a polluted coastal area in the province of Pisa (Tuscany, Italy). Short- and long-term incubations in the elutriates of two marine sediments (named A and B) exhibited an increase of PCs synthesis in all the phytoplanktonic species examined, when the elutriate concentration increased from 0% to 100%. Elutriate B, which was mainly contaminated by Cd, was shown to be more effective to induce PCs than elutriate A, which was richer in Cu and TOC. The results show that the PCs response, in the microalgae examined, was species-specific. Our data also show that the PCs synthesis occurred before the growth rate was affected, thereby indicating that PCs can be considered as an early warning response of metal exposure. The PCs response in exponentially growing cultures of T. weissflogii, which was found to be the most sensitive alga, increased when the initial cellular density decreased. Finally, the positive relationship obtained between the cellular PCs concentration in T. weissflogii and the degree of metal contamination of the elutriates from twelve sediments collected in a metal-polluted coastal area, confirmed that the PCs-induction test can be applied in field studies. In conclusion, the response of these marine microalgae suggests that these cellular peptides could represent an excellent biomarker of metal exposure, which is useful for the assessment of sediment toxicity, by carrying out PCs-induction tests on sediment elutriates.  相似文献

During a 1-year study (“Fine dust” Project) funded by the Lazio regional government (Italy), about 1000 daily PM10 and PM2.5 samples collected from six sites in the region were subjected to chemical fractionation based on differences in elemental solubility. In this way, it was possible to achieve meaningful characterization of the elemental composition of individual samples. For most of the investigated elements, we found significant differences between the extracted and the mineralized residual fraction. In general, fine particulate was best characterized by the composition of the extracted fraction, while coarse particles from traffic-related sources were best characterized using residues. For several metals (Cd, Pb, Sn, Sb and V) having a critical environmental impact, this result was particularly clear.The application of Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and receptor modelling (PCR) to the data set allowed us to evidence the enhancement of selectivity towards different emission sources that is obtained when chemical fractionated data are considered instead of total element content. Chemical fractionation seems to generate very selective markers for specific emission sources and in particular for re-suspended road dusts, one of the main factors responsible for the increase of elemental concentrations in urban areas.  相似文献

Saline solutions are the most commonly used hydrological tracers, because they can be easily and economically monitored by in situ instrumentation such as electrical conductivity (EC) loggers in wells or by geoelectrical measurements. Unfortunately, these low-cost techniques only provide information on the total concentration of ions in solution, i.e., they cannot resolve the ionic composition of the aqueous solution. This limitation can introduce a bias in the estimation of aquifer parameters where sorption phenomena between saline tracers and sediments become relevant. In general, only selected anions such as Cl(-) and Br(-) are recognised to be transported unretarded and they are referred to as conservative tracers or mobile anions. However, cations within the saline tracer may interact with the soil matrix through a range of processes such as ion exchange, surface complexation and via physical mass-transfer phenomena. Heterogeneous reactions with minerals or mineral surfaces may not be negligible where aquifers are composed of fine alluvial sediments. The focus of the present study was to examine and to quantify the bias between the aquifer parameters estimated during model-based interpretation of experimental data of EC measurements of saline tracer relative to the aquifer parameters found by specific measurements (i.e. via ionic chromatography, IC) of truly conservative species. To accomplish this, column displacement experiments with alluvial aquifer materials collected from the Po lowlands (Italy) were performed under water saturated conditions. The behaviour of six selected, commonly used saline tracers (i.e., LiCl, KCl, and NaCl; LiBr, KBr, and NaBr) was studied and the data analysed by inverse modelling. The results demonstrate that the use of EC as a tracer can lead to an erroneous parameterisation of the investigated porous media, if the reactions between solute and matrix are neglected. In general, errors were significant except for KCl and KBr, which is due to the weak interaction between dissolved K(+) and the sediment material. The study shows that laboratory scale pre-investigations can help with tracer selection and to optimise the concentration range targeted for in situ multilevel monitoring by unspecific geoelectrical instrumentation.  相似文献

Declines of amphibian populations have been a worldwide issue of concern for the scientific community during the last several decades. Efforts are being carried out to elucidate factors related to this phenomenon. Among these factors, pathogens, climate change, and environmental pollution have been suggested as possible causes. Regarding environmental pollutants, some pesticides are persistent in the environment and capable of being transported long distances from their release point. In Costa Rica, some pesticides have been detected in protected areas, at locations where amphibian populations have declined. Information about toxicity of pesticides used in Costa Rican agriculture to amphibians is still scarce, particularly for native species.Toxicity tests with chlorothalonil, a fungicide intensively used in Costa Rica, were carried out exposing tadpoles of three Costa Rican native species: Agalychnis callidryas, Isthmohyla pseudopuma, and Smilisca baudinii in order to evaluate acute and chronic toxicity as well as the biomarkers cholinesterase activity (ChE), glutathione-S transferase activity (GST), and lipid peroxidation (LPO).96-h LC50: 26.6 (18.9–35.8) μg/L to A. callidryas, 25.5 (21.3–29.7) μg/L to I pseudopuma and 32.3 (26.3–39.7) μg/L to S. baudinii were determined for chlorothalonil. These three species of anurans are among the most sensitive to chlorothalonil according to the literature. Besides, GST was induced in S. baudinii after exposure to sub-lethal concentrations of chlorothalonil while evisceration occurred in S. baudinii and A. callidryas tadpoles exposed to lethal concentrations of the fungicide. Chronic exposure to sub-lethal concentrations accelerated development in S. baudinii and caused lesions in tail of S. baudinii and I. pseudopuma tadpoles. Our results demonstrate that chlorothalonil is highly toxic to native amphibian species and that low concentrations can cause biochemical responses related to phase II of biotransformation and effects on development.  相似文献
