Environmental impact assessment (EIA) is a procedure for predicting environmental impacts of projects prior to their development, while post-auditing seeks to assess the accuracy of such predictions. A literature review examines the need for post-auditing, highlighting several benefits to EIA performance that could arise if the results were effectively used. This reveals that, in practice, post-auditing activities are not widespread, and suggests reasons why this is so. An overview of post-audit findings from a survey of published studies is then presented, and it is concluded that there is much scope for raising the profile of post-auditing in EIA world-wide. Preliminary results from a recent UK post-auditing study based on eight projects are described. Information on impact predictions was gathered and compared with actual impacts. A total of 366 impact predictions were made of which 78% were qualitative in nature; 57% of the predictions were auditable and of these nearly three-quarters were accurate. This work deals with the biodiversity and distribution of benthic macrophytes in the Ghar El Melh lagoon, a Mediterranean
coastal lagoon located in the North of Tunisia. An inventory was made of the benthic flora and submerged macrophyte communities
were mapped during two successive campaigns (the summer of 1999 and the winter of 2000). The following 24 macrophyte species
were identified: seven red algae, two brown algae, 11 green algae, and four marine angiosperms. The results were compared
with available data from the literature.
Ruppia cirrhosa is the most dominant species. It is found in all lagoon parts, except in the west sector.Ruppia beds are usually associated withCladophora forming heterogeneous communities. During summerRuppia cirrhosa shows a large distribution, covering an area of ca. 21.4 km2, with dense, extensive beds covering 80–100%. In winter, severalCladophora species have a very large distribution as well, covering nearly an area of 28.5 km2 with an average cover of 46%. The green algaeCaulerpa prolifera is confined to the eastern part of the lagoon which is mainly affected by seawater.
In comparison with previous situations, many transformations were observed in biodiversity and spatial distribution of the
dominant communities. Thus,Cymodocea nodosa andZostera beds, which dominated in the 1970s, were replaced byZostera andCaulerpa prolifera in the 1980s and are currently succeeded byRuppia cirrhosa andCladophora.
Restoration of the Ghar El Melh lagoon will enable an increase in the exchange with the open sea and the circulation of water,
in particular in the confined zones. This should considerably improve the water quality and would positively influence the

Concentrations of Ca, Mg, K, Na, Cu, Zn, Al, Fe and Mn were measured in soils and in Tamarix nilotica from Wadi Allaqi on the shore of Lake Nasser in the Eastern Desert of Egypt. All of the elements were concentrated in the leaves of Tamarix relative to the stems and roots. Leaf:soil concentration ratios, used as an indicator of metal accumulation in the plant, showed high enrichment factors for Na (67.5), K (63.0) and Mg (35.0); of the trace elements measured, Zn had the highest enrichment factor (7.64). Comparison with other desert species suggested that Tamarix was exceptional only in the accumulation of sodium. Periodic inundation of the soil by Lake Nasser caused dilution and dispersion of the accumulated salts. 相似文献

The rate of filtering Phaeodactylum tricornutum and Isochrysis galbana was measured in Hiatella arctica (L.) by the indirect suspension depletion method monitored by optical density measurement. The filtration rate of H. arctica was found to be 1.412×10–2 l/h/g wet weight at a temperature of 15°C when fed with P. tricornutum, at average cell concentrations up to 3.5×106 cells/ml. The filtration rate dropped almost to zero when the concentration of P. tricornutum reached 11×106 cells/ml. The filtration rate of I. galbana diminished at a much lower cell concentration of 1×106 cells/ml, and almost ceased at 3 to 4×106 cells/ml. In mixed cultures of I. galbana and P. tricornutum, the filtration rate ratio was 0.37 to 1.00, and this was believed to be due to a proportion of the smaller former cells passing through the ostia. However, when resuspended in sea water, I. galbana cells were taken at a rate slightly less than P. tricornutum. The medium in which the I. galbana cells had been grown was inhibitory to the filtering activity of H. arctica, since, when cells of either alga were resuspended in the medium, the filtration rate was considerably reduced. No inhibitory factor existed in either of the original nutrient media. Hence, the importance of using low cell concentrations and of eliminating any inhibitory metabolic products when measuring filtration rates of bivalves is stressed. H. arctica shows a typical activity temperature eurve for a boreo-arctic species, with a steady rise from 0°C to a maximum between 15° and 17°C, and a sharp fall in activity to about zero at 25°C. The rates of filtration of various species at temperatures approaching the optimum were compared after allowance was made for fall in filtration rate with increasing body weight. The results suggested that the Mytilacea had the highest filtration rates and that H. arctica possesses one of the lowest filtration rates recorded. 相似文献

Wetlands should not be considered as independent objects but as dynamically connected objects, collectively known as wetlandscapes. We developed a framework that analyzes the influences of wetland suitability and connectivity on amphibian distributions. We defined two indices: a Wetland Suitability Index describing wetland quality and a Movement Permeability Index characterizing wetland connectivity for amphibian population dynamics. These indices were calculated from raster datasets and time‐varying inundation estimates. The indices were used to define a wetlandscape and an amphibian model was used to simulate population dynamics within the wetlandscape. The framework was applied to the Nose Creek watershed, a highly modified wetlandscape in Alberta, Canada. Two amphibian species were selected with different habitat preferences: the Northern Leopard Frog that prefers wet habitats and has high mobility over land, and the Great Plains Toad that prefers terrestrial habitats and has low mobility over land. We found each amphibian species had a “preferred” wetlandscape, reflecting their life cycle traits and migration strategies which in turn were dependent on the hydrological and ecological connections within the wetlandscape. This study highlights the importance of investigating both individual wetlands and the wetlandscape and considering both wetland habitat quality and connectivity as non‐substitutable properties that act jointly, but differently, on population dynamics. 相似文献

Jordan faces stringent energy challenges mainly in the form of import dependence and escalating demand. The building sector accounts for 58% of total national electricity consumption and therefore plays an important role in addressing these challenges. This article investigates how energy efficiency in green buildings certified by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system contribute towards achieving United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Jordan. Furthermore, this paper proposes a new Comprehensive Contribution to Sustainable Development Index (CCSDI) to assess the contributions of implementation of the LEED 2009 prerequisites and credits in the Energy and Atmosphere (EA) category to achieve UN SDGs in Jordan. Questionnaire surveys were conducted to obtain data. Relative Importance Index (RII) method was used to evaluate the contributions of LEED 2009 prerequisites and credits in the EA category. Results indicate a positive relationship between the LEED 2009 prerequisites and credits in category and UN SDGs 7?9 and 12?13. We conclude that our proposed CCSDI is a robust tool for assessing the contribution of energy efficiency in LEED 2009 certified green buildings towards achieving UN SDGs in Jordan. 相似文献

Mediterranean wetlands are of key interest in the preservation of biodiversity. However, their ecological water requirement is in constant competition with human uses, particularly in a context of aridity and climate change. This paper examines the case of the Ichkeul Lake‐Lagoon system located in the north of Tunisia in a river basin that is heavily contributing to the water supply of southern regions through water transfers. It maps out the various actors involved, their stakes, discourses and strategies, and explains the current degradation of the Ichkeul system by unpacking the decision‐making power of these actors. In this research, a novel thermosensitive nanosphere polymer (TNP) was synthesized by copolymerization of N-isopropylacrylamide with 3-allyloxy-1,2-propanediol for the removal of diazinon from water. The characterization of the synthesized adsorbent has been performed by Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, scanning electron microscopy and elemental analysis. Batch adsorption method was performed to investigate the influences of various parameters like pH, temperature and contact time on the adsorption of diazinon. The equilibrium adsorption data of diazinon by TNP was studied by Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin and Redlich–Peterson model. According to equilibrium adsorption results, the Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin constants were evaluated to be 0.912 (L/mg), 7.916 (mg/g) (L/mg)1/n and 2.494 respectively at pH 7 and room temperature. Based on Redlich–Peterson model analysis, the equilibrium data for the adsorption of diazinon was conformed well to the Langmuir isotherm model. This method was successfully applied for removal of diazinon from environmental samples. Moreover, in reusing of TNP, the sorption capacity was maintained without any significant change after 10 cycles of sorption–desorption process. 相似文献

In the first part of this work, composites based on polypropylene (PP) and maple wood flour (MF) were prepared by melt compounding using twin-screw extrusion followed by compression molding. The morphological and mechanical properties of the composites were analyzed for three samples: PP, MF/PP and MF/PP containing maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (MAPP) as coupling agent. The results showed that MF/PP composites have improved mechanical properties, especially tensile modulus (+33 %), with only 8 % increase in density. The addition of MAPP further improved the mechanical properties, in particular tensile modulus (up to 51 %), which could be related to better fiber/matrix adhesion. In the second step, nano crystalline cellulose (NCC) was added to all samples to produce NCC-MF/PP hybrid composites. From the mechanical analysis performed, the hybrid composites with MAPP have improved properties, especially tensile (+53 %) and flexural (+40 %) moduli. These results confirmed that multi-scale hybrid NCC-MF composites can substantially improve the mechanical properties of polyolefins with limited increase in density (14 %) leading to high specific properties. 相似文献
