Maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein (MSAFP) was determined in patients 33 to 40 weeks pregnant, and the results were analysed with consideration of the presence and quality of hypertensive disease that complicated many of the pregnancies. Patients with incompletely controlled hypertension had significantly higher MSAFP levels than control patients with pregnancies uncomplicated by any risk factor. MSAFP elevation was greatest in pre-eclampsia (301·6 ± 147·6 kU/L, n = 35) > chronic hypertension with superimposed pre-eclampsia (240·4±74.7 kU/L, n = 30) > chronic hypertension (204·1± 105·3 kU/L, n=141). Each was significantly increased (P< 0·0001) over control pregnant patients' levels (104·3 ± 38·8, n= 187). At each gestational week from 33 weeks to term, MSAFP of combined hypertensive women was significantly greater than corresponding control levels (P< 0·003 to < 0·000l). The magnitude and time of onset of MSAFP increase may indicate severe fetal distress. 相似文献

Active microbial degraders of the herbicide prosulfocarb (PSC) were isolated to evaluate their performance in soil with a view to their use for bioremediation. The isolated cultures (a microbial consortium and a Pseudomonas sp. strain) were active when tested in mineral medium with PSC as the only carbon source, but had an adverse effect on the soil indigenous microflora. Biodegradation in the inoculated soils was thus lower than in the uninoculated soil when only the indigenous microflora was present. Further tests showed that the strong affinity of PSC for soil organic matter affected its bioavailability and hence its biodegradation by the inocula. Bioremediation of PSC contaminated soils could thus be undertaken by biostimulation of indigenous microflora. 相似文献

Fully activated basic alumina has previously been shown to have the ability to give quantitative separation of tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxins (TCDDs) from polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) using a 12% chloroform in hexane solution. Further separation of 2,3,7,8-TCDD from other tetra isomers can be accomplished by use of 100% n-butyl chloride, 15% methylene chloride in hexane or 40% chloroform in hexane. A more complete comparison of basic alumina with acidic and neutral alumina has now been carried out. Additionally, an evaluation of this procedure for use with the other 2,3,7,8- substituted furans and dioxins has been made. Lewis base oxygen sites of the dioxin and furan molecules were used to explain the interactions observed. The alumina surface is believed to provide randomly spaced aluminum sites which act as Lewis acids in the adsorption process. 相似文献

The risks related to global climate change are seen as threats to companies, taking into consideration their impact on the return on investment. In order to mitigate climate risk and introduce new opportunities to financiers, companies need to identify, manage, and report climate risks. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the climate risks disclosed by the 100 largest companies in the world, according to the Bloomberg and Price Waterhouse Coopers (PwC 2015) classification, and identify some characteristics of these companies that explain the disclosure level of such information. Preliminary results revealed that of the companies investigated, 14% did not disclose any climate risk information in the Carbon Disclosure Program (CDP) report. Also, from the companies that disclosed information according to the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), 9.9% did not provide information regarding policies, actions, and strategies for mitigating the risks related to climate change. The results shown by the content analysis suggested that, in general, there is still a low level of disclosure about climate risks by these companies. The final results through econometric instruments and statistical tests indicate that the size of the company or the fact that corporations are from developed countries do not necessarily explain the level of information disclosed. However, the activity sector, the continent, and the efficiency of the Board of Directors are factors that strongly explain the level of climate risk disclosure. We conclude that more effort is needed to encourage an engaging attitude from corporations to develop actions, policies, and strategies to mitigate climate change risks and threats. Efficiency of metabisulfite and a commercial steel wool as reducing agents in the removal of Cr(VI) from wastewaters was evaluated.
Chromium(VI) was converted to Cr(III), precipitated with NaOH, and removed by filtration. A reduction of more than 1.0 × 105 and 4.0 × 105 fold in total Cr and the Cr(VI) concentrations, respectively, was observed by employing steel wool masses as low as 0.4420 g
to 30-mL solutions of wastewater. Chromium(III) hydroxide obtained after the treatment was recycled and used as marker in

Surfing has becoming more and more attractive in the past few decades, constituting nowadays an important source of revenue
for many countries with extensive coastlines. For this purpose and also for environmental reasons, the conventional ways of
protecting a coastline appear to entail some disadvantages. An innovative and interesting way of improving surfing capacities
and contributing to protect a local coastal zone is by means of multifunctional artificial reefs. A multifunctional artificial
reef (MFAR) is a submerged structure that serves several purposes; in particular, it may enhance the surfing possibilities
and the environmental value of the local area. This structure has some promising new aspects, too: first, it provides an unimpaired
visual amenity; second, it offers tourist and economic benefits by improving the surfing conditions; third, it can enhance
the environmental value of the area where it is built, and fourth, if designed properly, the down drift erosion can be minimal.
An appropriate reef design in terms of ‘surfability’, i.e. the possibility to surf a wave, for the Leirosa beach, located
to the south of Figueira da Foz, midway along Portugal’s West Atlantic coast, has been investigated. In order to achieve the
best design several steps were conducted. First, the performance of the Boussinesq-type COULWAVE model is tested with experimental
data. Next, this numerical model is used to define the best values for three design parameters: reef angle; geometry of the
reef (without or with a platform), and horizontal dimensions for the appropriate geometry. A preliminary design was achieved
step by step, making use of the theory and of the state of the art of multifunctional reefs. This reef geometry is used in
the numerical study. In terms of ‘surfability’ and for the conditions of the local coastline of Leirosa, the following values
were found for the main parameters: a reef angle of 66°; a structure height of 3.20 m; a reef geometry composed of a delta
without a platform; a reef submergence of 1.50 m, and a structure seaward slope of 1:10. 相似文献

We assessed the effects of crude oil and drill cuttings on sediment oxygen demand (SOD) of marine benthic communities from
Arctic (Barents Sea) and temperate (Oslofjord) areas of the Norwegian continental shelf. Field-collected cores in both areas
were subjected to three different treatments: two concentrations of hydrocarbon-contaminated sediments, and drill cuttings
(DC). Cores were incubated for 21 days at 5°C (Barents Sea) and at 10°C (Oslofjord) during which SOD was measured five times.
We observed significantly higher SOD in the high oil concentration (HOC) and DC treatments compared to control cores from
the Arctic, but not in the temperate Oslofjord. No difference was observed between the low oil concentration (LOC) and control
at either location. The clear differences in the response of Arctic benthic communities to petroleum compounds compared to
temperate benthic communities is likely related to differences in community structure, sensitivity of individual taxa to petroleum-related

The behavior and fate of triasulfuron (TRS) in water and soil systems were examined in laboratory studies. The degradation of TRS in both buffer solution and soil was highly pH-sensitive. The rate of degradation could be described with a pseudo first-order kinetic and was much faster at pH 4 than at pH 7 and 9. Aqueous hydrolysis occurred by cleavage of the sulfonylurea bridge to form 2-(2-chloroethoxy) benzenesulfonamide (CBSA) and [(4-methoxy-6-methyl-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)amino] (AMMT). AMMT was unstable in aqueous solutions in any pH condition but it degraded more quickly at pH 4 and 9. CBSA did not degrade in aqueous solutions or in enriched cultures but it underwent a quick degradation in the soil. The rates of TRS degradation in sterile and non-sterile soils were similar, suggesting that microorganisms played a minimal role in the breakdown process. This hypothesis is supported by the results of studies on the degradation of TRS by enriched cultures during which the molecule underwent a prevalently chemical degradation. 相似文献
