Ectothermal organisms distributed along environmental gradients in a wide geographical distribution display extensive phenotypic variation. This is particularly pervasive along latitudinal clines, which are linked to gradual changes in environmental factors. Widespread species may also be distributed among biogeographic breaks, which in contrast to smooth clines, often show abrupt changes in phenotypic traits. In species with widespread latitudinal distribution that also encompass important biogeographical breaks, it is not clear which of those factors prevails on shaping the phenotypic variation or if some traits are particularly more sensitive to one or the other. To evaluate this, we measured 4 fitness-related traits in 6 populations of the intertidal snapping shrimp Betaeus truncatus, as its distribution along Chile expands over 40° in latitude and three major biogeographical provinces. Here, we statistically evaluated the role of both, latitude and biogeographic breaks, on mean population values of fitness-related traits but also on the variances and covariances (i.e., P-matrix) between them. Overall, our results (1) indicate that latitude is more important than breaks in shaping the phenotypic variation of most of these fitness-related traits, (2) show that the differences in the variance–covariance relationship among traits between the extremes of the gradient arises from gradual increases in variance and rather sharp changes in covariance at mid-latitudes and (3) show that at present, it is difficult to unambiguously determine whether natural selection or plasticity is responsible for the observed pattern in means, variances and covariances and only further work might disentangle these possibilities. 相似文献

Nanoparticles (NPs) contained in commercial products are released and enter into the aquatic ecosystem, posing serious possible risks to the environment and affecting the food chain. Therefore, investigating the potential toxicity of NPs on aquatic organisms has become an important issue. This study assessed the toxicity and trophic transfer of metal oxide NPs from marine microalgae (Cricosphaera elongata) to the larvae of the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus. Larvae (24 h old) were fed on 2000 cell mL?1 48 h of microalgae contaminated with 5 mg L?1 of several metal oxide NPs (SiO2, SnO2, CeO2, Fe3O4) for 15 days. Larval viability and development were monitored from the 4-arm stage to the 8-arm pluteus stage. A significant decrease in survival was observed in larvae fed with microalgae exposed to SiO2 and CeO2 NPs. Abnormal development, characterised by skeletal degeneration and altered rudiment growth, was observed in all larvae fed with contaminated NP algae. Our findings revealed that SiO2 and CeO2 NPs exerted a toxic effect in the trophic interaction analysed, by reducing sea urchin larval viability, and all metal oxide NPs induced toxicological effects. In conclusion, metal oxide NPs may enter the food chain and become bioavailable for marine organisms, affecting their development. 相似文献

The use of functionalised metal sulphide nanoparticles (NPs) for nanoremediation and biomedical application is rapidly increasing, which could lead to significant inputs into the marine environment. The potential impact of some NPs on marine organisms is still poorly understood. In the present paper the genotoxic potential of Ag2S and CdS NPs on Mytilus edulis haemocytes was assessed. MPEG-SH (thiol-terminated methyl polyethylene glycol), was used as capping agent to avoid NPs agglomeration. TEM analysis showed that the Ag2S NPs size was 13±7 nm, whereas CdS quantum dots had an average diameter of 4±1 nm. DNA integrity was evaluated by Comet assay following exposure to increasing concentration series (0.01–10 mg/L). Both silver and cadmium NPs showed genotoxic effects at the highest dose. MPEG-SH was also found to exert a weak genotoxic activity, suggesting that at least part of the genotoxic potential of functionalised NPs on mussel cells might be attributable to the capping agent. These results confirm the genotoxic potential of Ag2S NPs for mussel cells and demonstrated, for the first time, that CdS NPs is genotoxic in a marine organism. 相似文献

Many studies comparing the behaviour of individuals of different genders or species showed that animal body mass and forage quality/quantity are key elements of the foraging ecology of herbivores. Since body mass could also influence the animal’s sensitivity to predation risk, its vigilance behaviour should consequently be affected. Alpine ibex (Capra ibex) is characterised by a strong dimorphism among males of different ages, thus representing an ideal case study for testing the Jarman-Bell principle, avoiding possibly misleading effects resulting from the comparison between different species or genders. We analysed the fine-scale foraging behaviour of male ibex in order to assess the effect of body mass and the effects of vegetation quality/quantity on both foraging and vigilance behaviour. Our results showed that smaller males were more selective than larger ones, on account of their lower capability of digesting plant. Smaller males scanned the environment more frequently than larger ones. Male ibex grazed more selectively in sites with high quality forage and their bite rate increased as forage biomass decreased. Vigilance frequency increased with increasing forage biomass as, under these circumstances, ibex are able to prolong anti-predator vigilance while chewing bites that have already been cropped. Our findings highlight the effects of body mass per se on both foraging and anti-predator behaviours in herbivores, thus supporting the Jarman-Bell principle. Foraging can arguably be considered a very flexible behaviour with high evolutionary relevance as it enables herbivores to optimally adjust their total energy intake under varying conditions of food resources. 相似文献

Background Water Quality Criteria were firstly defined in the 1970s by the EPA in the USA and the EIFAC in Europe, recognizing the need
for protecting water quality in order to allow the use of water resources by man. In the 1990s, the European Commission emphasized
the importance of safeguarding structure and function of biologic communities. These approaches were chemically-based. The
European Water Framework Directive (WFD) substantially changes the concept of Water Quality, by assuming that a water body
needs to be protected as an environmental good and not as a resource to be exploited. In this frame, the biological-ecological
quality assumes a prevailing role.
Main Features The Water Quality concept introduced by the WFD is a challenge for environmental sciences. Reference conditions should be
defined for different typologies of water bodies and for different European ecoregions. Suitable indicators should be developed
in order to quantify ecological status and to define what a 'good' ecological status is. Procedures should be developed for
correlating the deviation from a good ecological to the effects of multiple stressors on function and structure of the ecosystem.
The protection of biodiversity becomes a key objective. In this frame, the traditional procedures for ecotoxicological risk
assessment, mainly based on laboratory testing, should be overcome by more site-specific approaches, taking into account the
characteristics and the homeostatic capabilities of natural communities. In the paper an overview of the present knowledge
and of the new trends in ecotoxicology to get these objectives will be given. A procedure is suggested based on the concept
of Species Sensitivity Distribution (SSD).
Recommendations and Perspective . The need for more site-specific and ecologically-oriented approaches in ecotoxicology is strongly recommended. The development
of new tools for implementing the concept of 'Stress Ecology' has been recently proposed by van Straalen (2003). In the same
time, more 'cological realism'is needed in practically applicable procedures for regulatory purposes. 相似文献

The prosperity and well-being of human societies relies on healthy ecosystems and the services they provide. However, the biodiversity crisis is undermining ecosystems services and functions. Vultures are among the most imperiled taxonomic groups on Earth, yet they have a fundamental ecosystem function. These obligate scavengers rapidly consume large amounts of carrion and human waste, a service that may aid in both disease prevention and control of mammalian scavengers, including feral dogs, which in turn threaten humans. We combined information about the distribution of all 15 vulture species found in Europe, Asia, and Africa with their threats and used detailed expert knowledge on threat intensity to prioritize critical areas for conserving vultures in Africa and Eurasia. Threats we identified included poisoning, mortality due to collision with wind energy infrastructures, and other anthropogenic activities related to human land use and influence. Areas important for vulture conservation were concentrated in southern and eastern Africa, South Asia, and the Iberian Peninsula, and over 80% of these areas were unprotected. Some vulture species required larger areas for protection than others. Finally, countries that had the largest share of all identified important priority areas for vulture conservation were those with the largest expenditures related to rabies burden (e.g., India, China, and Myanmar). Vulture populations have declined markedly in most of these countries. Restoring healthy vulture populations through targeted actions in the priority areas we identified may help restore the ecosystem services vultures provide, including sanitation and potentially prevention of diseases, such as rabies, a heavy burden afflicting fragile societies. Our findings may guide stakeholders to prioritize actions where they are needed most in order to achieve international goals for biodiversity conservation and sustainable development. 相似文献

The recent high-resolution multibeam bathymetry surveys around Lipari Island allowed to evidence several submarine canyons, whose head often cut back up to very shallow water and at a few tens of meters far from the coast. These canyons are mainly located in the eastern and southern side of the island and are characterized by an ongoing retrogressive (landward) erosion, that also controlled the shape and the evolution of the coastline. The canyon heads are formed by minor slide scars. By coupling slide scar morphometry and simple numerical model we have been able to roughly estimate the potential tsunami wave amplitudes generated by related slope failures. Moreover, the retrogressive erosion of canyon heads can be claimed as a cause of the enhanced subsidence reported in the last few thousand years in the eastern part of Lipari, where the main villages are located. Based on these evidence, we propose a first assessment of the coastal hazard due to marine retrogressive activity in the largest and most densely populated island of the Aeolian Archipelago. 相似文献

The Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) is the European Union's main instrument for agricultural planning, with a new reform approved for 2023–2027. The CAP intends to align with the European Green Deal (EGD), a set of policy initiatives underpinning sustainable development and climate neutrality in the European Union (EU), but several flaws cast doubts about the compatibility of the objectives of these 2 policies. We reviewed recent literature on the potential of CAP environmental objectives for integration with the EGD: protection of biodiversity, climate change mitigation and adaptation, and sustainable management of natural resources. The CAP lacks appropriate planning measures, furthering instead risks to biodiversity and ecosystem services driven by landscape and biotic homogenization. Funding allocation mechanisms are not tailored to mitigate agricultural emissions, decreasing the efficiency of climate mitigation actions. The legislation subsidies farmers making extensive use of synthetic inputs without adequately supporting organic production, hindering the transition toward sustainable practices. We recommend proper control mechanisms be introduced in CAP Strategic Plans from each member state to ensure the EU is set on a sustainable production and consumption path. These include proportional assignment of funds to each CAP objective, quantitative targets to set goals and evidence-based interventions, and relevant indicators to facilitate effective monitoring of environmental performance. Both the CAP and the EGD should maintain ambitious environmental commitments in the face of crisis to avoid further degradation of the natural resources on which production systems stand. 相似文献
