The upper thermal limits for burrowing and survival were compared with micro-habitat temperature for anomalodesmatan clams:
Laternula elliptica (Antarctica, 67°S); Laternula recta, (temperate Australia, 38°S) and Laternula truncata (tropical Singapore, 1°N). Lethal limits (LT50) were higher than burrowing limits (BT50) in L. elliptica (7.5–9.0 and 2.2°C) and L. recta (winter, 32.8–36.8 and 31.1–32.8°C) but the same range for L. truncata (33.0–35.0 and 33.4–34.9°C). L. elliptica and L. truncata had a BT50 0.4 and 2.4–3.9°C, respectively, above their maximum experienced temperature. L. recta, which experience solar heating during midday low tides, had a BT50 0.7–2.4°C below and a range for LT50 that spanned their predicted environmental maximum (33.5°C). L. recta showed no seasonal difference in LT50 or BT50. Our single genus comparisons contrast with macrophysiological studies showing that temperate species cope better with elevated
temperatures.

An important consideration in conservation and biodiversity planning is an appreciation of the condition or integrity of ecosystems. In this study, we have applied various machine learning methods to the problem of predicting the condition or quality of the remnant indigenous vegetation across an extensive area of south-eastern Australia—the state of Victoria. The field data were obtained using the ‘habitat hectares’ approach. This rapid assessment technique produces multiple scores that describe the condition of various attributes of the vegetation at a given site. Multiple sites were assessed and subsequently circumscribed with GIS and remote-sensed data. 相似文献

Network structure and parasite transmission in a group living lizard, the gidgee skink, <Emphasis Type="Italic">Egernia stokesii</Emphasis> 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0

Gidgee skinks (Egernia stokesii) form large social aggregations in rocky outcrops across the Flinders Ranges in South Australia. Group members share refuges
(rock crevices), which may promote parasite transmission. We measured connectivity of individuals in networks constructed
from patterns of common crevice use and observed patterns of parasitism by three blood parasites (Hemolivia, Schellackia and Plasmodium) and an ectoparasitic tick (Amblyomma vikirri). Data came from a 1-year mark-recapture study of four populations. Transmission networks were constructed to represent possible
transmission pathways among lizards. Two lizards that used the same refuge within an estimated transmission period were considered
connected in the transmission network. An edge was placed between them, directed towards the individual that occupied the
crevice last. Social networks, a sub-set of same-day only associations, were small and highly fragmented compared with transmission
networks, suggesting that non-synchronous crevice use leads to more transmission opportunities than direct social association.
In transmission networks, lizards infested by ticks were connected to more other tick-infested lizards than uninfected lizards.
Lizards infected by ticks and carrying multiple blood parasite infections were in more connected positions in the network
than lizards without ticks or with one or no blood parasites. Our findings suggest higher levels of network connectivity may
increase the risk of becoming infected or that parasites influence lizard behaviour and consequently their position in the
network.

Hierarchical perception of fertility signals and nestmate recognition cues in two dolichoderine ants
Laurent Cournault Jean-Christophe de Biseau 《Behavioral ecology and sociobiology》2009,63(11):1635-1641
In social insects, queens are likely to “honestly” inform their nestmates of their presence and fertility status through pheromonal
communication. Cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) have been reported to be effective nestmate discriminators and strongly suspected
to act as fertility signals, at least in some species. The use of the same chemical bouquet (i.e., the CHC profile) to convey
two fundamentally different information seems puzzling. However, a recent threshold model proposes a hierarchy in the discriminating
processes, i.e., fertility signals can only be perceived if nestmate recognition has been reached (Le Conte and Hefetz, Annu
Rev Entomol 53:523–542, 2008). Here, we developed a simple behavioral bioassay based on chemical recruitment toward a queen placed outside the nest in
two dolichoderine ants (Linepithema humile and Tapinoma erraticum), which allowed us to investigate the interplay between fertility signaling and colonial recognition. Using queen corpses
of various origins (nestmates or aliens) and physiological states (fertile or infertile; mated or unmated), we demonstrated
that nestmate recognition cues clearly override fertility signals under our experimental conditions. Indeed, while nestmate
infertile queens were largely ignored by the workers, nestmate fertile queens (mated or not) induced worker recruitment, whereas
alien fertile queens did not and were aggressed by the workers. 相似文献

There is growing evidence that the sex ratios of wild vertebrate populations are determined by mechanisms that are directly
influenced by environmental characteristics. The Trivers–Willard (TWH) and extrinsic modification (EMH) hypotheses postulate
differing determinants of mammalian offspring sex ratios. TWH states that mothers allocate resources according to their current
condition and sex-specific offspring costs. EMH states that environmental forces that affect maternal condition determine
offspring sex ratios, independently of maternal tactics of sex-biased allocation. We statistically assessed support for each
of these hypotheses using long-term life histories of the allied rock-wallaby, Petrogale assimilis; a continuously breeding, polygynous, weakly dimorphic marsupial. We showed that birth sex ratios were equal and independent
of maternal and environmental conditions. However, secondary sex ratios were male-biased under good environmental conditions
and for high quality mothers or mothers in good condition. Sex differences in offspring survival contributed to these biases:
(1) environmental conditions strongly influenced survival to pouch emergence (in support of EMH) and (2) maternal quality
affected survival to the end of maternal care (in support of TWH). Environmental effects on survival were more important than
maternal factors over the entire period of maternal care and contributed most to male-biased sex ratios at pouch emergence.
In contrast, maternal mass was the best predictor of sex ratios at the end of maternal care—the life history stage where offspring
body mass differed between the sexes. 相似文献

Love bites: male fang use during coercive mating in wolf spiders 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0

Evolutionary conflicts of interest between the sexes are common, as mating tactics and strategies that increase fitness benefits
for one sex may incur costs for the other. As a consequence, antagonistic coevolution between the sexes often results in a
complex arms race between male persistence and female resistance. Coercive mating (e.g., forced copulation) likely benefits
males by increasing the probability of mating; however, costs to females may be high, including injury or even death. Here,
we report on a study of the use of fangs by males of the wolf spider Schizocosa ocreata (Hentz) during forcible mating with resistant females, which results in hemolymph loss and scar tissue formation in females.
Microscopic inspection revealed that fang wounds (evidenced by scar tissue) were absent on unmated (virgin) females but were
found on mated females and were significantly more frequent in coercively mated females. Experimental fang immobilization
studies found no difference in copulation success between experimental (fangs immobilized) and control (sham manipulation)
males. However, males that had use of their fangs had significantly longer copulation duration. These findings represent a
previously unknown male mating tactic in spiders and an unrecognized potential cost of mating for female spiders. 相似文献

The causes and consequences of variation in sperm quality, survival and ageing are active areas of research in ecology and
evolution. In order to address these topics, many recent studies have measured sperm viability using fluorescent staining.
Although sperm viability staining has produced a number of interesting results, it has some potential pitfalls that have rarely
been discussed. In the present paper, I review the major findings of ecology and evolution studies employing sperm viability
staining and outline the method’s principle limitations. The key problem is that the viability assay may itself kill sperm,
which is likely to confound many common experimental designs in addition to producing artificially low estimates of sperm
viability. I further suggest that sperm number should be routinely measured in sperm viability studies, as it may be an important
but overlooked source of spurious results. I provide methodological advice on sperm viability staining aimed at minimising
artefacts and producing robust conclusions, and discuss possible avenues for future research.

We performed male attraction experiments and staged courtship sequences to test for non-random mating with respect to social
behavioral phenotype in the comb-footed spider, Anelosimus studiosus. While asocial behavior is the dominant phenotype in all A. studiosus populations examined to date, a social phenotype approaches a frequency of 15% in colder environments. We collected test
subjects from higher latitude polymorphic populations and scored all individuals as to their behavioral phenotype prior to
their use in these trials. Males of both phenotypes differentially approached and courted social females over asocial females
and no-spider controls. By offering males different numbers of females of one type vs. the other in subsequent trials, we
determined that the difference in attractiveness between the two phenotypes social/asocial is 1.5/1. Both the web produced
by a female and a female that has been removed from its web attract males. We suggest that the male attracting pheromone is
present on females and is also attached to silk threads. Staged encounters completed between males and females of the respective
phenotypes demonstrated that courting males suffer significantly less pre-copulatory sexual cannibalism with social females
than with asocial ones, and thus, female social tendency is phenotypically linked to sexual aggression. We propose that the
male preference for social females is adaptive because of the observed asymmetry in courtship success. 相似文献

Meteorological conditions influence strongly the energy and water budget of birds. By adjusting their flights spatially and
temporally with respect to these conditions, birds can reduce their energy expenditure and water loss considerably. By radar,
we quantified songbird migration across the western Sahara in spring and autumn. There autumn migrants face the trade-off
between (a) favorable winds combined with hot and dry air at low altitudes and (b) unfavorable winds combined with humid and
cold air higher up. Thus, it can be tested whether birds may chose altitudes to minimize water loss instead of energy expenditure.
We predicted optimal flight altitudes with respect to water loss and energy expenditure based on a physiological flight model
when crossing the western Sahara and compared these model predictions spatially and temporally with measured songbird densities.
The model aiming for minimal water consumption predicted a mean flight altitude of 3,400 m under autumn conditions. However,
64% of the nocturnal songbird migration flew at altitudes below 1,000 m above ground level profiting from tailwind. This preference
for tailwind in autumn, despite the hot and dry air, emphasizes the importance of energy savings and diminishes the significance
of possible water stress for the selection of flight altitude. Nevertheless, during daytime, high energy expenditure due to
air turbulences and water loss due to warmer air and direct solar radiation prevent songbirds from prolonging their nocturnal
flights regularly into the day. Birds crossing the Sahara save water by nocturnal flights and diurnal rests. 相似文献

Animal groups arise from individuals’ choices about the number, characteristics, and identity of associates. Individuals make
these choices to gain benefits from their associations. As the needs of an individual change with its phenotype, so too we
expect the nature of its associations to vary. In this paper, we investigate how the social priorities of male plains zebra
(Equus burchelli) depend on reproductive state. An adult male is either a bachelor, and lacking mating access, or a stallion defending a harem.
Multiple harems and bachelor males aggregate in larger herds. Herds frequently split and merge, affording males opportunities
to change associates. Over a 4-year period, we sampled the herd associations in a population of 500–700 zebras. To isolate
the effects of reproductive state on male social behavior, we account for potential confounding factors: changes in population
size, grouping tendencies, and sampling intensity. We develop a generally applicable permutation procedure, which allows us
to test the null hypothesis that social behavior is independent of male status. Averaging over all individuals in the population,
we find that a typical bachelor is found in herds containing significantly more adults, bachelors, and stallions than the
herds of a typical stallion. Further, bachelors’ bonds with each other are more persistent over time than those among stallions.
These results suggest that bachelors form cohesive cliques, in which we may expect cooperative behaviors to develop. Stallion–stallion
associations are more diffuse, and less conducive to long-term cooperation.
